I didn't discover "Unsung" until a few months ago. Just watched the edition with DeBarge last weekend. If y'all are interested, TV One will rebroadcast it TODAY AUGUST 21 AT NOON. For the fans, it's a heartbreaker! Not tied up in a pretty bow!!

P.S. For you 90's-born posters, yes, they're related to Kristinia; her dad James was in the group.

Yeah, I saw it.......Was I the only one that did not know they were black.......I thought they were representing for the latinos........It was ridiculous how everyone had or is currently struggling with a drug problem including El.

Good! :) The DeBarge episode originally aired last year so I'm really late to this party, if you will, but it was worth it! Finally some solid (worth-seeing) programming on a black-targetted cable network. (And TV One shows Half & Half reruns. :D )

they are not showing this episode right now. :(

It's today at NOON. :) Here's the schedule for Aug 21:

If y'all have time, post back and share your thoughts. Thanks! :wavey:

I wonder if the episodes differ depending on your cable provider. Before creating this thread, I checked and the only shows scheduled ("Unsung" doesn't come on very often) were DeBarge and Donny Hathaway. Directv says the next airing for DeBarge is 8/29.

No, I thought they were black. What surprised me after seeing their "Unsung" was that they were half white. There are a lot of AA's with french-sounding last names but in the doc we find out that DeBarge senior is white. That said, I see your point: they can pass for Hispanic. Up here in the Tri-State Area, there are plenty of Latinos that look like the DeBarges.

I always knew they were half-white.

Having said that it was the Debarge episode they showed on my cable. It's a very sad story... all the abuse. :( The fact that every child ended up on drugs and the one that resisted the longest finally succumbing to the devil.. :tears:

I never thought about it since as we know, AA's come in all shades. :) I cracked up at that veteran producer at the beginning saying that DeBarge was guaranteed success because they were "Light, bright and damn near white". Why did he have to put it that way?! :tape:

This is why I recommended it for y'all. The DeBarge story moved me to :tears:. And about El going solo: back then, I thought he was going to give Michael some competition because IMO El was that good. I'm glad they did "Unsung" so that Kristinia and the other grandchildren can learn from their parents' mistakes.

Watched it, and it was very sad.
I always wondered why they seemed to fade away so fast. Now I know why
They all look like they've had some hard lives, except James.

You all are probably too young to remember Phyllis but don't miss this one because you'll see the story of a really talented woman who just didn't fit in. R&B singers are being called sellouts all the time but that wasn't Phyllis's problem. It was actually the reverse. She didn't want to conform even when TPTB at her record company was none other than (you may have heard of this cat? haha) Clive Davis.

I know, right. It wasn't until I saw "Unsung" that I realized that they were only hot for a couple of years. That said, they had some really good songs in that short time span. Oh for y'all that are interested, there's a Shalamar episode, too. No drugs but lots of personality conflicts!

I'll have to be on the lookout for that one too.
Loved me some Shalamar. :D

Thanks! I just checked TV One's site and that show "Life After" sounds fantastic (even if Omarosa is a subject. LOL). And, yes, look out for Shalamar. Howard, Jody, Geoffrey and their producers are all in it (2009 interviews). Very well done and y'all can see whose camp you're in. One producer was really blunt, something like "Shalamar was Howard and his two back up dancers". :tape: Oh "Unsung" Season 3 starts soon; Teena Marie, Roger (Zapp) and Klymaxx will get their own episodes.
