For all those JJ fans who'd like to discuss tennis related topics but to skip Seka, Tarja, Ceca, Brena, Karleusa, Ripanj... posts.

Maybe you should rename it to Tennis Muttering Thread? Or WTA Tennis Thread?

What do we think about Wozniak v Hantuchova and Cibulkova v Stosur?

I like Wozniak - she's so cute when she talks. Hantuchova is in a slump, but Wozniak will have the pressure of a defending champion... I'm not impressed by Stosur, mini JJ in two tough sets!

I think that Wozniak and Cibulkova will get to the second round.

Now if only I could start liking tennis again.

I hate it ever since Jelena started slumping.

I didn't appreciate Matt Cronin's twitter about Serena ignoring Jelena in Stanford. I know I've been goofing around the board saying those two were BFF, but I never truly believed it. I think those days are over. Especially when JJ started getting to the top of the rankings. You could see that Serena and Venus started talking JJ down with all that quality instead of quantity bullshit. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but then again maybe I'm not.

edit. I've just realized I was talking about JJ in a non-JJ thread.

Well, JJ said that you must beat WS to be real #1, and her score is 8-8. Safina's score is 2-9, and that was enough for Serena to start being unkind.

Cibulkova and Wozniak screwed me up! :(

Well, at first I started following tennis cos of Sharapova. But at the beginning of last year during the AO/Hopman Cup I watched JJ for the first time, and since then I am her fan. :) So yeah, I just follow JJ and Masha, pretty much don't give a damn about the rest of the WTA , I just like Demented and Azarenka a bit.

JJ could learn a lot from Marion. When JJ got tired she just gave up but Marion fought against the odds to win the match. Even though Venus kept getting back into the match, Marion never stopped believing that she could win the match. Anyway, I guess it showed JJ was up against a formidable opponent so I am not too discouraged by her loss but I hope she can improve her fitness.

Yep - yes she fought when really tired and Jelena didn't this tournament. I'm really glad Marion won. At AO - it just seemed her whole purpose was to play really well against Jelena and knock her out and just that. When she defeated Jelena here - I thought it would be the same although I wanted her to keep playing well and win. But I didn't expect her to do it for a moment.

From Ana's press conference

I have to be more open and communicate. Because in the past I just felt like maybe I would hurt my coach by saying “Look, let’s just take it easy” or I would get judged by him because I’m not tough enough.

I learned that I can speak a little more open and can say to them (my coaches) “Look maybe I need to take a couple of days off.” It’s working really well for me. I have the feeling, you know, that I’m not here to please them.

Is it working for her? Really? Telling your coaches you don't want to work that hard doesn't strike me as the approach you should be taking when you're playing like crap.

I read it in Ana's forum and yeah everyone there agrees that it doesn't look good. Ana's been talking bullshit for quite some time now - I understand their worries. Jelena's been full of it for a while but at least she's capable of sounding cocky and confident. Hopefully this recent trash talk will transfer onto court. With Ana you just never know...

I am trying to help them - I posted so many loooong posts there. They've decided to take it slow and see if they can come up with some new suggestions. There's no doubt they'll get the new name. They're all so tired from voting and everything, they're probably all like "let's just choose whatever!".

Thank God everything went easy for us. I can't believe how smooth it was. I guess we formed a group that really works well together.

I dunno about you guys, but Samantha Stosur scares the shit out of me. She's luckier than Ana at her best, has a huge serve & groundstrokes and feisty personality. Not to mention all those muscles... Janka Terminatorka, Dinara Hulk Yellow and Serena "get you in the locker room" Williams got nothing on her.

That said, I love how she turned her career around. I just hope she isn't in Jeca's part of the draw at the USO.

Melinda has words with line judge when ball called out for deuce: "Just watch the ball, please! Don't guess! Don't believe! Watch the ball!"

Players exchange breaks ... Ana's serves or in her court, in the net, long and sometimes where they are actually supposed to be: 6-6!

Heated exchange between Ivanovic and ump: "You've got to be kidding me! It was this far out!" ... "But that's not this mark, Ana!"

I haven't, but it's clear she's a big mess at the moment. She got rid of her long term fitness coach Scott and Craig Kardon, she leaves you with the impression she can't be bothered to put in the work and she seems to be enjoying watching her boyfriend playing golf more than playing tennis.

Jelena is frustrating enough right now. I'd hate to be a fan of Ana.

Yes, that would be definitively a great win against Azarenka and she needs it! That could be a match that would change the rest of the year, you know, turn it into a great 2009 end.

I never really been a great Ana's fan, i am from those who thought that winning RG was a bit of luck, but, there is definitively something wrong with her. When she lost yesterday i was like, okay, at least, if Jelena lost, it is going to be against Azarenka, i mean, the kid played great tennis this year, but well, not lately so...

I feel she can do it! I feel she will break the circle of sync defeats with her serbian sis and go on her own.

P/S: I like Stosur. She has guts and power, amazing come back, i admire that, but i still think Jelena would beat her because, she fight on every point.

I am not a big fan of Ana either. I always thought she could work on her strategy, because, she doesn't have any. If her big shots don't work, she is basically struggling. And even with her big shots working, winning a match against the top 10 players is complicated.

As for JJ climg to #3, i think she is fully motivated and she has a chance to make amend for a the 7 first months of 2009. She will totally go for it. We also notice that she is again, being a little b***y in her comments, so, maybe she is really back!

TORONTO — Dinara Safina is out of the Rogers Cup.

The No. 1-ranked Russian fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Aravane Rezai of France in a second-round match Wednesday at the $2 million WTA Tour event.

Safina's loss came one day after No. 3 seed Venus Williams was upset by Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko. Safina opened strong, but fell apart in the second set with six double faults and winning fewer than half of her points on serve. Safina finished with 17 double faults.

The 23-year-old was broken three straight times in the third and deciding set, slamming her racket to the ground after the final point.

Safina fought her emotions while trying to explain how the match got away.

"It's my brain," said Safina, who lost an opening match for the first time since February. "I know exactly what I have to do, but if I'm not using my brain, I'm not doing the things my coach is telling me. ... (I'm) too disappointed with myself."

"Ball toss disaster. I don't move my legs, I'm jumping backwards instead of jumping forwards, I'm kicking it too much instead of hitting it more, I drop my head, I don't hold the left arm.

"It's so much. I know this all, and I'm still so stupid that I'm continuing to do it."

Safina enlisted help from her coach during the match — but he couldn't help her shake her struggles.

"How can he help me if I'm not doing anything?" Safina said. "I have a game plan and I step on the court, and I do completely the opposite thing.

"He was just frustrated ... he left the court. He said, 'When I'm telling you one thing, and you do completely the opposite thing and you're losing, you're just moving backwards.'"

Rezai, who will face Russia's Alisa Kleybanova in round three, felt for Safina after the match.

"I'm very sorry for her because I don't like a player who's not confident," said Rezai, ranked 39th in the world. "I prefer to beat a player in good shape. I'm a player that feels when I lose, it's the worst moment in my life."

Despite the loss, Safina is in no danger of losing her No. 1 ranking — even if No. 2 Serena Williams goes on to win the tournament. Williams hit the court later Wednesday against Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

With less than two weeks until the U.S. Open, Safina said she would use the time to catch her breath.

"I will take a few days off," Safina said. "I think this is the best ... you know, just to recover, and rest. Not much you can do, you know?"

And now Kleybanova loses to Wickmayer in the first round of NH in another 3-setter. Who says WTA sucks?!

Well she can certainly use the excuse that she was tired. It was her first semi final on the tour in Toronto, and she had to play a lot of tennis to get there and Wickmayer is another promissing player.

And now, i guess we can all understand why JJ doesn't want to learn and heard about the WTA. Why on earth would she like to hear that Kleybanova was defeated by Wickmayer?

Yeah, Vaidisova is totally out of the picture. Too bad for her, she had a good potention, but she is no longer a young rising star now. I've heard she has a lot of personal problems.

As for Arvidsson, we all know that JJ is often making things complicated in her early matches. But she seems very focus and if she can find a way to win her serve when she leads 40-15, that would make things a lot easier, but as the draw will be out in a few hours, we'll have a better idea.

A lot of talk about the Dumbo/Shrieky match in round 3. That's good. I didn't want to be negative. But the only match I watched of JJ's this year was against Kleybanova. I kept asking myself "why am I doing this to myself?" I may do the positive thing and just not watch any of her matches anymore ;)

downunderfan
Aug 28th, 2009, 07:53 AM
Now, Bruno, you really chose the wrong JJ match to watch. Anyway, I came to the conclusion after nearly 5 years of following her. It's way better to be a crazy delusional JJ fan hoping for that first slam title than to support Kuzzy or Ana who got it and are now playing like crap. It's kind of like waiting for that first date - most of the enjoyment really is in the anticipation. Hence better to support Dumbo or JJ who can still produce ridiculous scorelines!

Bruno71
Aug 28th, 2009, 08:45 AM
I'm down with the slam anticipation concept...it was never really the top thing for me anyway. I sort of hoped to watch a player improve with age...I guess that's sort of a mixed thing in this case. But those matches a la Kleybanova where you know she's just making it harder for herself are simply so much to take sometimes. I was astounded how easily I got caught up in it after all that time.

Actually I feel sorry for Oudin. The American press can build up a person like no one's business and yeah they may love her now, but the minute she starts losing a few matches that she could've win, they'll turn on her. This sport, more than any other sport, really loves to eat its young.

As for Melanie being like JJ. I think gamewise JJ's better when in form. She was at her best last year when she won those three titles in a row, great offense and defense.

Maybe next year that JJ will come back. :hearts:

Sep 8th, 2009, 11:35 AM
I think JJ even at her most passive would hit more than 16 winners in a 34 game match. JJ whilst not the most offensive minded player does at least attempt things like opening up angles, setting up drive volleys and BDTL winners. That was horrible to watch the way Sveta just handed Wozzy her QF place after being so dominating in the 1st set and then all of a sudden gifting away so many games with 2 or 3 stupid errors per game. Towards the end of the match she'd lost her confidence so much she was even pushing herself just deep into the middle of the court hoping for an error.

I said the other day watching a Caro/Oudin match would probably be just like watching 2 people in a practising match rallying for like 10 minutes before someone eventually gets bored and just blasts the ball off the court

It'l be interesting to see who out of the 2 ultra defensive players does try and take control though, i think Oudin does turn defence into offence better out of the two but she tends to only do it when there's pace to absorb which she won't get from Caro. You'd have to back Caro to come through, but with how irritating a lot of us find Oudin she'l probably win just to keep annoying us

I think Oudin will have troubles with Woz's semimoonballs. For short players handling those loopy balls with a lot of spin is very difficult.

More like 2760 exactly - Beijing, Stuttgart and Moscow titles + YEC semi + Tokyo QF. And Beijing is mandatory now so it will stay on her ranking no matter how she does there. I don't even know how much backup points she's got, but it can't be more than 500. That's scary!

I partly agree, since JJ has most definitely had her share of matches won and lost by pure pushing. I think most of her early round ''thrillers'' were actually insufferably boring for the most part because she didn't think it necessary to attack and just made sure to keep the ball in the play and let her weaker opponents self-destruct by UEs. Those were some painfully ugly matches and boring too (unless you're a JJ fan and care for the outcome :sobbing:).
But, on the other hand, when it matters (and when she doesn't go completely insane), JJ indeed turns defence into offence or even occasionally plays an aggressive match throughout.
JJ is a mainly defensive player but she's boring only when at her worst, while Caro has been boring me to death this entire season.
As for Oudin, she seems more JJ-esque than Caro-esque, and that's why I'm interested to see what she can do when her opponent doesn't make any UEs. It's a good test for her.

Let me just add a couple things. I've seen matches where JJ's not only not hit 16 winners, but not hit 10, and won. Think back to her matches against Dellacqua at AO 08, Cornet at Rome 08, etc., though I don't have the stats off the top of my head. If she can get away with letting her opponent implode, she does, and Caro does the same thing.

I didn't see Caro's match last night, but I did see a good portion of her match against Cirstea the other day. And in that match she was quite aggressive and played some beautiful tennis. So, Wozniacki too may change up her approach to each match like JJ does. I think JJ overall is a better and more aggressive player than Caro, but the reputation Caro is earning has been a little unfair, just like it was at one time with JJ. Once Caro becomes a more consistently elite player, and people see her play more in different styles of matches, that reputation will likely dissipate.
