Ho. Lee. Shit. Serena won her women's doubles and mixed doubles matches tonight though.

I don't care if this is an exhibition. I don't care if Serena was likely not going full throttle. For a 14 year old girl to take a set off the current Wimbledon champion and world #2, let alone with that kind of score is just  You can hear the semen tidal wave coming from the USTA offices right now...

Altough Serena probably didn't try too hard, this should be a confidence boost for young Madison. Hopefully she gets some kind of USO wildcard.

“I actually got into tennis because of Venus and Serena (Williams),” Keys said. “I was watching Wimbledon one year and Venus was playing and I really liked how she was playing but I also liked her outfit.
“I told my dad I wanted a dress like Venus’ and he said ‘only if you play tennis.’ So, I went to Walgreen’s, got a racket and started playing.”

Cute ;)

Similarly, in 2004, 15 yo. Vaidisova beat Wimbledon champion Sharapova 5-3.
Anyway those WTT matches opposing big tennis stars to unknown "debutantes" are kinda silly.
I can imagine the big name starting loose and then starting to lose games, being down a break and getting angry, not able to get back on track and eventually losing the mini-set of 5 games. On the other hand, given the friendly atmosphere, playing full throttle right from the start against the supposedly weaker opponent may look rude and cold-hearted.

Young Madison has already won a WTA Match against then #81 Kudryavtseva. Nice prospect.

Haha, does seem quite eerie doesn't it? I supposed they've figured out a way to make the press stop asking them about the future of American tennis and why more girls haven't been inspired to play after them. Way to come up with an instant answer with these three names and what better endorsement could they have given them than "I beat a Williams." It's even funnier that they're all black. Way to look inconspicuous.

For those of you who didn't know, I'm only joking.

I suspect that Venus and Serena are losing to young Americans so that they can claim that these young hopefuls are be so much better choices than them to face certain death at the clay abattoir the Italians are so lovingly setting up for them win the Fed Cup for the US.

If you very watch WTT it's purely for entertainment...everybody laughing and screwing around...can't read anything into a 5 point "game" in WTT.

It is for entertainment, but this is the only set Serena has lost in all 3 nights that she played. Obviously she's not going in with the same intensity as a real tournament, but she certainly isn't letting Madison win either. Seriously, how many times over the years have we seen Serena matches win at less than 50% of her best level? The number is endless.

If nothing else, we can deduce from this match that Madison is already playing at a level that's good enough to compete on the pro tour. For a 14 year old, that's pretty impressive in itself.

False confidence if one isn't trying their best and treating it like a real match.

I don't think Serena wanted to beat her down and totally embarrass her. That's very demoralizing and might want to make her quit. Besides, WTT is all fun and games. Not really real matches. This was practice for Serena. Serena was probably thinking about her next Twitter or the design she was working on or Common and why he said what he said the night before. ;)

If they meet at the US Open, Serena will make sure to bagel her

That is what Nadia Petrova attempted to do at Ponte Vedra Beach and nearly got whipped. She had not one blowout game against young Madison during that match, which Keys lost 6-3, 6-2. Every game was competitive 40-30, 40-40 or thereabouts. Keys is a teammate of Venus and Agassi on the Philadelphia Freedoms. TTC is broadcasting WTT matches next week with one of the games featuring the Freedoms. Hopefully, Madison is participating on that date so one can get a glimpse of what the future portends.

I was at this WTT match, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. First the caveat that I don't watch much tennis, and play occasionally. At first, it felt like Serena may have been going a little easy on her, but maybe she got in too deep. By the end, it really looked like Serena was giving it her all to win. I think she wanted to let Madison win a few points, but then mis-calculated how good she actually was. Serena looked quite solid in the doubles and mixed doubles. There was a "supertiebreaker" in the final men's match, and while her team was really cheering, she was on her Blackberry. It would be easy to fault her for that, but I suppose if I was headed to the White House the next morning, an exhibition-ish tennis match wouldn't compete with texting friends, etc. Regardless of Serena's level of play, Madison looked really, really good, and I think we'll hear more about her in the years to come.

I'm just saying, Serena losing an "almost set" winning only one game is not something I would expect her to do. If she really wanted to give Keys some confidence, wouldn't giving her a closer match would have made it more rewarding for the girl?

Serena, on all accounts, is a fighter, and I'm sure losing 5-1 to anybody doesn't feel good. I don't believe she really focused on this match, but also, I don't expect that she completely threw it either. My guess is that she wanted Keys to take a bit of a lead, and then Ree would pull a mini comeback and then let Madison win. However, I think Keys held it together better than she expected, and after that, I think Serena just gave it to her.

Well this whole night was quite exciting. After Serena dropped this game she stormed back in mixed dubs and women's dubs to help the team go ahead slightly. Then her teammate won the final match, and the Kastles edged out a victory by 1. With Serena they are 3-0, before she came they were 0-4 I believe. Aside from this one blip, she's been stellar in all of her victories, and in all categories.

I say that to say that I do think she takes it seriously, but that she also has a lot of fun out there. You can tell b/c she's always laughing and smiling, just having a good time. So this match with Madison I think it's safe to say it was a fluke. Serena tried to give her some points at first, then it sort of slipped from her and by the end I know she wanted to win. She had just not taken control of the match and things happen so fast in this format.

Like I said for Vee's losses, it's just WTT. At the end of the day, people will remember an exhilarating night of tennis and that the Kastles somehow found a way to win.

For those who have the tennis channel, the WTT matches come on there usually early mornings.

I thought you were trying to say something else. So, thanks for answering. :)

BJK must have told Serena to lose to this little girl
she reminds me of Aleandra Stevenson, lookswise

True, noticed that too. Hope her fortunes don't follow suit....

WOW! Is this the "SERENA WILLIAM'S EXCUSE THREAD"? I am just curious. All I've read is EXCUSES.

Probably because it's unlikely that a 14 year little girl with very little professional experience is likely to beat an 11 time GS Champion, coming off her most recent win at Wimbledon without any.

Serena Williams - Creating Child Prodigies

First she made Sharapova famous after the 2004 Wimbledon Final and now Madison Key in WTT :worship:

A win over the Williams has indeed made the careers of so many players.

As has a win over Graf, or Seles, or Navratilova. Get over yourself.

Dont be green eyed monster  , she defined Elena's career too last year, after choking against her in that match.

I watched WTT on TV because I was excited about seeing her play. It was a bit disappointing -- she looked like a lot of other pretty good 14 year olds. Nothing special though it's hard to tell much from WTT format and only one match.
