The race for the USO seed has begun

The win over Agi was very important since Agi, Alona and Lena are very close in the rankings and are "fighting" over that spot :p
Currently Lena's projected ranking is 32 after she beat Agi and Alona beat Meghann.

Aug 5th, 2009, 11:55 AM
Yes it is. Im kind of glad she's playing all of them with them being premiers and giving herself the best chance of getting seeded for the US open. I just hope she doesn't play doubles too in all of them if her knee is still bothering her. I think after the USO she'l take a 3 week rest and then she'l probably only play Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow and possibly Linz before the season ends.

Michael.
Aug 5th, 2009, 01:51 PM
how far away from seeding is she ?

allrounder
Aug 5th, 2009, 02:15 PM
Well her win has taken her above Szavay to at least 33 but i think she'l need to at least make the quarters here to definitely get into the top 32 which is unlikely given that she has to get past Safina in R3 should she get there. Barring a really poor run of form though she should get into the top 32 seeded positions before the USO because she has virtually no points to defend from last year.

Michael.
Aug 5th, 2009, 02:18 PM
good , lets hope she can have a really good summer hard court season so she doesn't get one of the top 4 seeds in the third round at uso if she does get seeding .

schorsch
Aug 5th, 2009, 03:39 PM
Well take a look at the projected rankings with Vesnina and Bondarenko in the second round. Bammer, Benesova, Csn, Szavay are out this week. Elena and Alona remaining in the tournament. For a seed at a GS you need to be ranked in the top32 (except Wimbledon which can tweak around a few things ).

29 Sybille Bammer AUT 1720
30 Iveta Benesova CZE 1636
31 Carla S. NavarroESP 1634
32 Elena Vesnina RUS 1597
33 Agnes Szavay HUN 1596
34 Alona Bondarenko UKR 1576

-

Well actually lets see how many points the girls around her are defending untill the USO and where they intend to play :speakles:

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Rankings_Stats/Singles_Numeric.pdf

Bammer: 180 pts - Cincy, Toronto, New Haven
Benesova: 156 pts - Cincy, Toronto, New Haven
CSN: 102 pts - Cincy, Toronto, New Haven
Vesnina: 2 pts - Cincy, Toronto, New Haven
Szavay: 142 pts - Cincy, Toronto
Bondarenko: 56 pts - Cincy, Toronto, New Haven

Keep in mind that it always depends on the 17th best result when looking at the points that come off or are added.

I can't believe how much the Kremlin cup has been downgraded this year to a 32 field and Tier 2. It'l probably end up being a field entirely of Russians and former Soviet state players.

Yes it was a Tier 1 and one of the biggest events after the USO. It's only a week before the year end championships now too so it might force players some of the top players to skip it to rest up for Doha the week after if they've already secured their place there.

I'm worried about her drop in rankings. According to TBE's projected ranking after Wimbledon, she'll be 57 on July 5th, with a possiblity to drop even further if Groth (vs. Venus) or Pironkova (vs. Bartoli) make it to the QF. In the race she'll be somewhere in the 90's.
The consequence of such a low ranking is that she'll need to qualify for New Haven, where she has to defend her RU place and a whopping 320 points. This might prove very difficult....
A further dropping in ranking seems unavoidable.
I sincerely hope she'll play some MM's in Europe after SW19, preferably Portoroz, to get some extra hard court practice..

Goldie, it's clear you haven't seen her play singles recently. There is a reason she can't move up, and it's right between her ears. She has absolutely no confidence in herself while playing singles.
She needs to work on her mental game.

I saw her almost beat Wozniacki on green clay, and she looked fine.
Thats the same player I saw in doubles this week.

Rix643
Jul 6th, 2010, 04:47 AM
That was also the player I saw against AMG (OO '07) or Bartoli (IdS '07), but not the player I saw against Zahlavova (UO '10) or King (IdS '10). Definitely not the player I saw against Barrois (OO '09) where she imitated Zvonareva after a couple dubious calls.
Not even the player I saw against Mathis or Kloesel (Linz '07), Kerber (OO '07), LDL (GO '07), Safina (PG '07) or Schruff (OO '06)
In other words she's far too inconsistent to make it solidly into the top 20. She might scratch it, but in the long end she'll drop back to the ranking she actually belongs, somewhere in the bottom half of the top 100.

She can play some 100k's after the WTA season, if she wants.
I think she might want to get healthy for January

Rix643
Oct 4th, 2010, 12:29 PM
Which 100k?
Poitiers right after Moscow ot Taipei first week of November?
She played Bratislava and Krakow once in 2008, not really a success (both times exit in rnd 2, against Nasty Pav and U_Rad respectively), but gave a good preparation for 2009: her first tournament led to her first final.
Unfortunately both tournaments don't exist anymore, at least not as a 100k in this period.
She should have chosen for Linz/Luxembourg instead of Moscow. There's a chance she'll play Q here and an early exit is most likely (and of course I've got an alternative motive having her play L/L).
It's gonna be a rough start of 2011..

Just outside top 50 with 50 points from nr. 50 Bacsinzsky.
We're reaching the end of the season, only a couple ITF's remaining. Currently of interest is the 100k at Poitiers, with Sofia Arvidsson seeded 3rd. With last year's points subtracted, Arvidsson is trailing Lena by 111 points, so she'll need to win this tournament to overtake Lena in the rankings.

Still sliding down the Race Rankings at an alarming rate. With the 12 points thusfar gathered in Doha quallies she would be around 130 not calculating points gained by other players. The wins against Shvedova (returning from injury) and Flipkens (overrated Belgian) were far from convincing.

A slight improvement on all levels. Playing qualifications wasn't such a bad thing after all, seeing her win a couple of matches, gaining some points and moving up the rankings again. The right direction has been found, now let's keep it that way.

Her preliminary (and not yet confirmed) schedule after Charleston:
Fes, Estoril, Madrid, Rome, Strasbourg, RG.
Two more International-level red clay tournaments, compared to last year.
A good way to start rebuilding her career.

No play, so slipping slightly.

Couple of important weeks coming up, in total Lena has 270 points to defend in the USA, of which 130 are from PVB which isn't being held this year (Remember how happy the organizers were when the tournament was held for the first time? Just two years ago.... Sad, actually. But I digress).
No point in IW however, due to an injury last year which got Lena her first zero-pointer. Furthermore 80 in Miami and 60 in Charleston (both 3rd round).

Slight increase in the singles rankings, a significant drop in the race. She needs to win some points here soon, especially since she has to defend quite a few the coming weeks. She might drop out of the top 80 before the red clay season starts.
A great jump in the doubles ranking after IW. Confirming her status as Russia's third best doubles player by climbing 9 spots in the rankings and raising to the 6th place with Sania. A spot at the YEC seems feasible.
