Agnes played terrible in the first set. After the second set Patty looked so disappointed you knew she was going to go away.

Congrats Agi :bounce:

Patty :o:sad: Great week for you. Started the match off beautifully then just completely went away in that third set. Her shot selection and mentality were just horrible. Good luck next week in Palermo.

Well that's a bigger title, but this is her home title. Remember her nerves like last year and against Garbin. I think this really means a lot to her, like besides slams, this is her dream come true.

I was able to watch on TV. Not great match too many errors.
Agnes saved several BP's with winners on *5-4 in 2nd set i think.

I'm fine with them as long as the players I like win and the players I hate lose.

I must say I am really happy for Ági, but Patty sure did suck. Ági played pretty well and didn't choke, which was amazing, but Patty sure helped her do that.

Patty isn't taking the loss too badly so neither will I.

Szavay just had too much game for her in the end. When her shots started clicking, it was only a matter of time until the umpire called "game, set, match" in her favor. Patty seems to have a lot of respect for her, they are both smiling and talking at the awards ceremony.

The highlight of the week ended up in the awards ceremony when Patty said "I hope to see you next year." Whether that is just the standard answer or if she really meant it remains to be seen, but at least she has given her fans some hope that she won't just give up.

Quite.

Poor quality match for the most; many wild, needless errors and way too many neutral rallies with both players hitting the ball straight down the middle of the court (and still missing). Schnyder's ROS was crap, but then again it always is.

I began following this with Szavay up 2-1 (and a break) in the 2nd IIRC and she was struggling to keep up with Schnyder in rallies (Schnyder kept pushing her to way behind the baseline with deep moonballs to both corners) - perhaps the reason why she was hitting the bejesus out of the ball at times, like iPatty complained, and sometimes rushing the net; no point in engaging in moonball rallies she had little chance of winning instead of going for her shots. But above all she was struggling to win points on Schnyder's serve, so I have no idea how she got that break before I began watching. But she held her own serve (clutch play when serving for the set, as other people have remarked), closed the set, and Schnyder went on a mental walkabout early in the 3rd. From then on Szavay tried to choke it away, but Schnyder didn't give her the opportunity to do so.

Why would she? She showed that she still has more than enough game to win this kind of tournament. Actually, like I said in the livescoring thread, had she begun to play MM clay events a couple of seasons ago she'd have already won half a dozen of them.

Well Ági was a lot mentally stronger than I expected frankly, but if Patty could have closen out the last game in the second set or even made it close in the last game of the third set, I think she would have won the match. Whatever, I'm glad she didn't :p.

Pleased with the result. Apart from being the most underated player on this board, Szavay is a gorgeous player to watch when it's all clicking together. Her backhand has immense timing and the cleanliness of the stroke is something to admire. If only she was more aggressive, she'd be top 10 easily. Well theoretically anyway.

Patty has never been on my 'player i'd love to go have dinner with' list, but you can't fault her competing this late in her career.

Szavay can't be consistently aggressive off her FH side as she can only either loop it back or flatten it for a very low % shot. And above all her movement is below average - maybe even mediocre. She struggles to keep herself in rallies against just about any halfway decent baseliner.

Agreed about the gorgeousness though. Her wide swing BH is one of the prettiest strokes in the game.
