This is near my city.

Woman Accused in Fawn's Death

An elderly woman says she was defending herself when she hit a 25-pound deer with a shovel. WKYC reports.

Even at 76, Dorothy Richardson defends her property from the destruction of deer. "My husband died ten years ago and I been keeping, I keep this house together." For the first time, though, she is accused of going too far.

Reporter: "This is the shovel you used, right here."
Mrs. Richardson: "I just tapped him, a little bit."
Reporter: "Okay, it's just a regular dirt shovel."
Mrs. Richardson: "Just a little tap."
Reporter: "And you wanted... show me."
Mrs. Richardson: "I just did like this. Tap. Just a tap."

Richardson says she was defending herself when she beat to death a fawn, crouched in her flower bed.

Mrs. Richardson: "His eyes contacted my eyes, like he's going wild. And when is he going to jump, and bite my head off?"
Reporter: "Do you really think you are in danger with a fawn?"
Mrs. Richardson: "Absolutely. Absolutely."

Neighbor: "I bet it was 25 pounds, less than two feet tall."

Longtime neighbor and Euclid councilman Christopher Gruber says Dorothy told him something entirely different.

Neighbor: "She hit it once and according to her, it squealed. She hit it two more times, and she says what I wanted to do is put the deer at the edge of the yard so the other deers know not to mess with me."

Instead, she stuffed it in a cardboard box, dragged it to the curb, on trash day.

Neighbor: "It just put a stake in my heart."

Councilman and constituent are no longer on speaking terms.

Mrs. Richardson: "I give. I'm a giving person. I'm a loving person. And this action have upset me to the most."

Gruber is now a witness in the animal abuse case against Richardson.

With the stuff going on in Iran and China, you'd think CNN would have more important things to sensationalize. She's an eccentric old woman.

I think Mrs. Richardson should be committed to a mental-health facility. In these tough economic times, you don't throw away perfectly good venison.
