View Full Version : Jon Wertheim : speculation on martina 's comeback

Regarding the following from your 50 thoughts on Wimbledon: "And keep an eye on this: Martina Hingis' ban lapses in October, a day or so after her 29th birthday." Don't tease. Really? Might we see some much needed star-power and crafty play return in the form of Ms. Hingis?
-- Jay, Phoenix

• No tease intended. Just saying that the ban lapses and, at a minimum, at least she'll be allowed back in the Grand Slam venues. Will Hingis come back? After all, 29 isn't ancient. This is total speculation, but I wouldn't hold my breath. While Hingis might be tempted (and she stayed in shape in her absence), there's a difference between winning a match here and there, and being competitive week in and week out.

Im pretty confident in my amazing memory skills (lol) that she said when the ban expired she wasnt coming back but who knows what that means.

Wouldn't she be embarassed to comeback? I mean she was publicly humiliated by being thrown out of the tennis world.

I highly doubt it!

I don't see yet another comeback from her. And we really don't need another one. One comeback was enough - and it proved to be a success! Let's leave it at that.

Anyone who wouldnt want to see her play again is an idiot. She can still play for another 2-3 years, 30 years old isnt what it used to be :)

I think she is too proud to comeback, she is probably happy tending to her horses and just enjoying her money.

Martina did a very full and frank interview referenced recently on this forum. Nevertheless it breathed that slightly lazy complacency that even her mother acknowledges. Martina knows she could match the best over a set by trying her hardest, but would struggle to keep up with their power over a whole match. Yes, she finds horse riding easier...

A Martina N comeback is more likely

That's probably true.

Still, I think there is still a slight chance for a comeback. She could still spend a few more years in the top 10 if she really wanted it...

I just dont get it. People say she shouldnt come back because she is 29? Woman play past 29 in all other sports, but for some reason the skeptics on this forum think 29-35 is over the hill for Tennis? If she still loves to play, why the hell shouldnt she?

She won't come back. She feels betrayed by the system. No way she's coming back unless the ITF apologizes to her and compensates her. ITF bans Hingis for 2 years then changes the rule a year later, how shady is that.

Why would she come back? I know that if she wanted to she could still do okay, but why would she bother? She wasn't a big threat to anyone really in the last year or so she was on tour, so I don't see the point.

I couldn't care less either way though. If she came back it'd be nice to have another big name in the mix, but if she doesn't I'm not going to lose sleep.

I would love for her to make a comeback and finish with a bang. To go out the way she did with the whole controversy surrounding her is not the way her career should be remembered. She made a mistake, we all do sometimes.

I remember her winning that match and I was so scared that Lena wouldn't be able to beat her in the final. But for once, Lena proved me wrong :p

She should come back onto the doubles tour - she was always one of the best doubles players and with a good partner could easily top the doubles rankings again.
