World No. 1 Safina Only Top 20 Player at WTA Portoroz

Posted on July 18, 2009

With 20 ranking spots between her and the No. 2 seed, world No. 1 Dinara Safina should safely be considered the favorite this week on hardcourt at the Banka Koper Slovenia Open in Portoroz on hardcourt.

Also seeded are Anabel Medina Garrigues, Kaia Kanepi, Roberta Vinci, Sara Errani, the once-promising Lucie Safarova, Vera Dushevina, and Petra Kvitova.

Wildcards went to Slovenian hopefuls Tadeja Majeric (who opens against Safina), Nastja Kolar, and Croatia's Petra Martic.

Former world No. 1 junior Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands opens against the No. 5-seeded Errani.

So i guess she plays tomorrow  ( starting at 16:30 apparently : 16:30 SRC Marina Main Draw Singles & Doubles )

And now the Autograph session is scheduled on Tuesday !

i'm as crazy when i watch Dina or Marat play !
the " leaving the room and asking someone to let me know the score " thing i do it especially when there's a matchpoint against them or something like that .
during Wimbledon my sister was at her place watching Dinara's match and i don't know for which match it was but Dinara was losing in the second set so i called my sister and asked her to stop watching because when she didn't Dinara won the first set , so she listenned to me and then Dina won all the others game to finish the match

 Oh no, I'm the same way with my sister. She likes to actually, you know, hear matches (novel concept, right?) so when she finally convinces me to turn the sound back on and Dina starts losing, I blame her and tell her to mute it again. Then if she's reading and then she looks up and then Dina loses a bunch of points, I'm like "Please, keep reading!" But if she's watching and then when she stops that's when Dina starts losing points, I force her to watch again.:tape: So pathetic.

Hopefully Dina gives both of us an easier time tomorrow. ;)

If it's a match that's most likely gonna end in defeat I watch it until the last couple of games and just turn my laptop off and spent 20 mins doing other stuff, then I have to turn it on to see if the player has done the improbable and turned things around :p But I just don't wanna witness the end :p
I'm the only one in my house that likes tennis to follow each tournament and a certain player so I've got no back up to watch the matches for me

They did that again during the match against Momo at Wimbledon , and when i came to the room they were all hiding smiling they were like : she won ? and i was like : duh of course she did ! and they told me that i wasn't that confident during the match

Dinara Safina vs. Tadeja Majeric - Preview

Dinara Safina will be "faced" in the first round of Portoroz in Slovenia against a weak opponent like Tadeja Majeric. The Russian had done everything great in this year as she not only is keeping her first position in Wta ranking but also is doing a great work even with the points difference that she has with Serena Williams. In this year she took many good results like the final of Sydney and Australian Open, the quarterfinal of Indian Wells, the final of Stuttgart, had won the Rome and Madrid, had lost in the final of French Open but was a good result even the final that she reached, the semifinal of S-Hertogenbosch and the last result for her was the semifinal of Wimbledon. Dinara Safina has a good powerful serve and in this moment can't be compared with a player like Tadeja Majeric. For the Slovenian player we can't say anything positive as her positive results for this year are the quarterfinal of Buchen, the semifinal of Osprey, the semifinal of Balikpapan, the quarterfinal of Tarakan and the final of Tanjung Selor. Those are many good results but are unknown tournaments and doesn't give anything to players like Dinara Safina level. It hasn't any doubt anymore that Dinara Safina will be in clearly advantage in this game and i prefer to take her in every handicap as she has enough power to break every single serve of Tadeja Majeric.

Tadeja should get double bageled tonight

From yesterday's match

http://twitter.com/Milanou

Majeric is serving into the bottom of the net, oh the nerves...CC never this full on day 1

Df to end the set. Can't judge the speed of courts, seem quicker than last year (thank god), but might just be cause of Dina's hitting.

Linejudges seem blind, Majeric only has like one winner from a rally, all few points she won are from errors.

Dinara suffers a lapse in concentration and finds herself a break down, wow.Majeric actually hits a second winner on bp.

Error after error after error by Safina, ugly ugly ugly.

Safina picking up her game again, match should be done soon. Majeric has 3 winners...I approve of hostesses' outfits

In the end Safina wins without much fuss,Majeric had 6 winners.Mass crowd exodus now,but for me comes the highlight.

so mean. Dinara deserves fans, who don't make fun of her all time. :ras:

It should be Pervak but Goerges is fighting tough...Pervak's got the break in the 3rd. But let's hope she's tired tomorrow!

see, Slovenia adores Dinara so much, so they send a sacrificial qualifier to her tomorrow, who played two really long matches in the last two days.

Dinara Safina vs. Ksenia Pervak - Preview

Dinara Safina has a great year after she had done everything good in this year and will be good for her to keep the same form even in this tournament as in this way she will create even more difference with her opponent for the 1st position in Wta ranking Serena Williams. The World number 1 will be against in this second round of Portoroz in Slovenia against a weak opponent like Ksenia Pervak that is not in good shape as in this year she hand't done anything compared with Dinara Safina and will be difficult for this player to keep her serves and to keep also many pressure in her shoulders. In this year she reached many good results like the final of Stuttgart, had won the Rome and Madrid, had lost in the final of French Open and this was her disappointed result as she deserved more in that tournament. Other positive results for her are the semifinal of S-Hertogenbosch and the semifinal of Wimbledon. It will not be problem for Dinara Safina to be in good level today against her Russian opponent as she has good powerful serve and anything else to come here like favorite and to believe that can break many time Ksenia Pervak. It will be a easy game for Dinara Safina in this 2nd round and i expect her to break several times and to profit from this situation as she needs some moments more to prove her skills even in this different court. In this case ill give priority to her and also agree that Dinara Safina should win this game in two sets ad with many breaks from her side.

There's a poll on the Dina Open website asking who's gonna be stronger :

Predict the outcome of the all-Russian 1/8 final clash between Dinara Safina and Ksenia Pervak

Safina wins 2 : 0. 85%
Safina wins 2 : 1. 8%
Pervak wins 2 : 0. 3%
Pervak wins 2 : 1. 3%

Safina on Stage on Friday

The date between Dinara Safina and Maria Elena Camerin is set for Friday when they will take the centre court at 6:30 pm. World No. 1 and a heavy favourite to capture the Banka Koper Slovenia Open 2009 is in top form outplaying opponents. The last one to feel her strength was Russian qualifier Ksenia Pervak.

27-year-old Italian (100) upset No. 7 seed Vera Dushevina on Wednesday. 2006 finalist lost the first set and was on the verge of dropping out at 5:5 in the second when she managed to regain her strenght, close the second set 7:5 and overpowering the Russian in the third leaving her at love game.

Dinara Safina leads 3:1 in their match-up. 23-year-old Russian defeated her five years senior Italian in Paris 2004 (indoor), s-Hertogenbosch 2006 (grass) and Rome 2006 (clay). The only time she fell to Camerin was at the 2005 US Open. All matches apart from the one in Rome ended in three sets.

2004 PARIS - w. D. SAFINA 6-3 3-6 6-3
2005 US OPEN - w. CAMERIN 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3
2006 S'HERTOGENBOSCH - w. D. SAFINA 4-6 6-2 6-1

Dinara Safina vs. Maria Camerin - Preview

Dinara Safina will be against in this quarterfinal of Portoroz in Slovenia with a weak opponent like Maria Elena Camerin. The Russian had done everything great in this year as she took many points and is doing a great work in the 1st position in Wta ranking, leading with a good difference against her rival for that position Serena Williams. In this year Dinara Safina reached the final of Sydney and Australian Open, the quarterfinal of Indian Wells, the final of Stuttgart and than comes with two good tournaments like the win of Rome and Madrid after both tournament were in the same month. Another good result for her is the final of French Open, the semifinal of S-Hertogenbosch and the semifinal of Wimbledon were she had lost there against her sister Venus Williams. It will be interesting to see the Russian against a Italian girl like Maria Elena Camerin that for some is unknown player. She hasn't good results in this year as even in Wimbledon she was eliminated in the first round from Shahar Pe'er with the result 2-0 with sets. It's clearly that she hasn't the level of Dinara Safina and it hasn't any doubt that she will be in pressure every time that will serve. In this year she hadn't done anything and will not be expected her to do that in this situation. It will be a good game for Dinara Safina to prove her skills and to break many serves of Maria Elena Camerin.

It's the same things said as usual but well

First to take the centre court are top seed Dinara Safina and Maria Elena Camerin. Word No. 1 had an easy cruise to the quarter-finals dismissing Slovenian wild-card entry Tadeja Majeric and qualifier Ksenia Pervak of Russia in straight sets. On both occasions 23-year-old Russian demonstrated powerful tennis from the base line outplaying her opponents in every aspect of the game. Safina is enjoying her second week here in Portoroz, she arrived a week early to get familiar with the surface and use the time for practice as he is getting fit for the US Open hard court series.

Safina Express Rolls into Semis

World No. 1 Dinara Safina powered into the semi-finals of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, crushing Maria Elena Camerin in straight sets, 6:3 and 6:0 in Friday's first quarter-final.

The hot favourite for the Portoroz title took control midway through the first set, after which it became a virtual no-contest, as she racked up eight straight games. The match lasted only 69 minutes.

Safina was particularly dominant on Camerinĺs service game, allowing the 27-year-old Italian on 20% of points on her first service and 33% of all service points. Her cross-court backhands often left the 2006 finalist stranded.

The 23-year-old Russian was also perfect (5 of 5) in converting break opportunities.

In the second set, Camerin managed to win only nine points as Safina opened up her full arsenal of shots. "I started to play much more aggressively in the second set and went for my shots," she said.

Safina will now play Alberta Brianti of Italy (106), who overcame Frenchwoman Camille Pin (109) in straight sets, 6:3 and 6:2.

The two will meet for the first time on the WTA tour.

Safina, Errani Into Slovenian Final

PORTOROZ, Slovenia - She didn't quite manage the feat in Palermo last week, but now Sara Errani is just one step away from defending her title at the Banka Koper Slovenia Open. It's a big step, though. The 22-year-old Italian, who has built a 9-0 record at the $220,000 International event, will have to defeat world No.1 Dinara Safina if she is to make it a perfect 10 and lift the trophy for a second year in a row.

Safina blitzed the pair's only previous meeting, at Stuttgart in May, but judging by the way Errani has played her past few matches the world No.38 is is ready to take it to the top seed this time. Having won her quarterfinal against wildcard Petra Martic for the loss of just two games on Friday, the Italian was almost as mean in Saturday's semis as she brushed aside Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, 61 62.

Earlier, Safina overcame an indifferent start and a dogged opponent in Alberta Brianti, a 29-year-old who, like 19-year-old Voegele, was making her first appearance in a semifinal on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. But, while she was new to the occasion she had the maturity, confidence and crafty style to make Safina work for her win, despite the 105-place gulf in rankings between the two.

The Italian was undoubtedly helped by Safina's unforced error count, which totaled 44 by the end of the match. Having built a commanding lead in the first set, Safina allowed Brianti to break back, and the same thing happened in the second. After a game that went to deuce 10 times Safina broke Brianti, but the Italian responded by snapping her illustrious opponent's serve to love.

Still, it was not enough, and after 95 minutes of play Safina was through to her seventh final of the year.

"I had a lot of chances to finish the match more easily," the Russian admitted. "I think I slowed down at some important moments but overall I'm happy that I could win."

The doubles final was also played on Saturday night, with third-seeded Julia Goerges and Vladimira Uhlirova beating Camille Pin and Klara Zakopalova in straight sets, 64 62. The win marks the first Tour title of any kind for Germany's 20-year-old Goerges; 31-year-old Uhlirova now owns three doubles titles, having won at Amelia Island with Bethanie Mattek-Sands in 2008, and at Budapest with Agnes Szavay in 2007.

Glad that Dina realized that she made that match a lot harder than it needed to be.

Defending her title will be a big challenge for Errani, as she will be facing world No. 1 Dinara Safina in Sunday's final. Safina defeated Errani's compatriot Alberta Brianti in straight sets, 6:4 and 6:3, in the earlier semi-final.

Errani said her game plan against the world's best player will be to run her around from the baseline. "Of course, she's the favourite, but I have nothing to lose and will give it my all."

The two had met earlier this year on clay in Stuttgart, when Safina won 6:1 and 6:0.

Dinara in for the 12th, Sara for the 3rd

Banka Koper Slovenia Open 2009 final will face top-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia nd defending champion No. 5 seed Sara Errani of Italy.

World No. 1 Safina is playing her 23rd Sony Ericsson WTA Tour final of her career and 7th of the 2009 season. She has won two titles this year, at Rome and Madrid. She was also runner-up at Sydney, Australian Open, Stuttgart and Rolland Garros.
"It is always good to win and advance to the final," said 23-year-old Russian after her semi-final win against Alberta Brianti of Italy, 6:4 6:3. She also revealed that she was using every match as a practice to improve her weaknesses. "I still have room to improve. I take one match at a time. I feel I should be more aggressive. Tomorrow it will be a perfect match for me to be dominant and very aggressive on the court," added Safina. "She is a good opponent, but I think I'm still the favourite and I should just go out there and play my game," Safina revealed her thoughts prior to the final. She will try to capture her 12th WTA Tour title at Sunday's final.

Errani is likewise very strong and confident prior to her match-up with Safina. ôThis week is really incredible. Before the tournament I did not know what to expect with all the injuries I am struggling with lately,ö said Errani after her fourth consecutive win. ôI have nothing to lose for sure. Safina is the favourite. I think we can play a good match," added 22-year-old Italian who dropped only eight games en route to the final. Safina won their first encounter on clay in Stuttgart with 6:0 and 6:1 earlier this year. ôEvery match is different from the other. The surface as well as the occasion are different here. I'm confident. I'll be relaxed and I'll try my best. So, let's see how it goes. Normally is that I lose. If I win, it will be just perfect.ö Errani is playing her second final of 2009 and fourth of her career. Last year she reached back-to-back titles at Palermo and Portoroz. This year she managed to reach both finals as well, but lost in Palermo to Flavia Penetta last Sunday.

Will she manage to clinch her 10th consecutive win at Banka Koper Slovenia Open or will Safina capture the title in her debut appearance at Portoroz?

Thanks Vanessa. I would also like to recommend a psychiatrist to help her with her weakness.

Our Dina:hug: is truly a work of art:lol:;we HAVE to give her credit for battling back when Errani served for the match, just as she did when Cornet had that chance at the AO.Although she gets discouraged and loses her fire sometimes when things are going badly,Dina always keeps fighting at least a little bit.She did this even in the AO final when Serena was so amazingly dominant. This is in contrast to others we've seen this year who faked an injury, cried and quit in the middle of a Grand Slam match just because they were getting outclassed by a vastly superior player. It is her scrappy quality that will carry Dina to a Slam one day.Aye HOPE we don't have to wait 'til she's 28 years old with the Williams sisters retired but, hey,Slam victory is Slam victory, right?

well, bruce, i would choose the fatty bagels any day before the heart-thrilling battles. but thats just me.
and i'm tired of seeing Dinababe sucks so hard. she could be more easier, and i don't blame the press anymore, because obviously she is her own worst enemy. and she'll going to mental-hospital if she can't get over it.

"Oh, they won again, ho hum." :shrug:To a degree, you're right...except Serena sometimes gets overconfident and loses her way during her match...and she doesn't always make it back even though her comeback ability is impressive. Her lapses in intensity make Graf the better player,all-time(even Richard Williams says so),but they also add an element of excitement that wouldn't otherwise exist.Venus is noticeably more solid,focus-wise,than Serena so she rarely loses when she gets on top

Dina Coaster has no breakes (not like the real ones), and always ends up with faceplant. and thats just heartbreaking. thank you, i see enough that to want some boring stuff.
yeah, i like woman tennis because thrilling, yes, but sometimes just too much and need a break. especially for me, who likes to be a bored pussy.

She was never going to lose that match and I was right.
I won't be worried about the way the final ended.
You can see how well Errani fought. She put everyball back for an impatient Dinara to hit errors.
She hit some stunning winners at times.
Now off to Los Angeles :drive:
