Well done Serena/Venus! 9th Grand Slam title together, 4th at Wimbledon :yeah:

Depressing bad luck for Stosur/Stubbs in the first set tiebreak to lose the one minibreak by a netcord but overall the Williams sisters were just that bit better. Very good match and close contest all round.

Well done Sam/Rennae getting to the final, Rennae at 38 is so amazing :worship:

Reverse of last year and I'll take it.

Another annoying thing with commentators they say crap like Venus and Serena only wins with brute force. Like the woman (don't know who she is) but she said how they are trying to bully their way through the match and it's not working. Jeez they are not the only power players on tour, and while their ACES often help they are not the only ones who relies on it.

Great match, always a good way to end my Wimbledon. Do love a bit of doubles and this is the only time of the year we get to see doubles, and it's so exciting! It deserves a big stage when big stars like Venus and Serena play!

Kinda shaky and shitty, but thats for giving Vee a title ! :woohoo:

Hope they play USO!!! And most importantly ahve a lovely rest and are back fresh for the USO SERIES!

loves it!!
so glad Venus walks away w/ a doubles slam title at least

Serena was so clutch in the end. She carried the team to victory at the very end but my goodness she was the worst player on court for 1 set and a 1/2.

Stubs and Stosur played great for the most part and Stosur had nerves of steel.

Very happy to see another Wimbledon title for Team Williams :D

Serena was, for most of the match, pretty erratic, although she certainly raised her game towards the end and that ace to finish off the tournament was sublime. Venus did an ample job too :p

Good to see Rennae and Sam give a highly credible account of themselves today - some of their volleys were brilliant :yeahL

NBC set aside six hours for tomorrow, so unless it rains AND Roddick surprises everybody by taking Federer the distance, they should have time.

By the way, was today a day for servers, or was today a day for servers? There were only six breaks of serve in 87 service games, and five of the eight sets played were decided by tiebreaks. Ivo Karlovic-itis, I guess. ;)

The last two Federer-Roddick were best-of-threes that went the distance, so you never know. After today's clunker (AWESOME serving display by Serena, but not an aesthetically pleasing tennis match), I'm hoping for a classic.

What?

Serena and Hantuchova epic bump during '06 US Open series. Serena was already mad that she had lost to Daniela that year @ the AO.

There was cattiness from both players. Daniela was like "She always expects people to move out of her way." Serena won the match in three.

Fittingly they met again at the USO and Serena won again in straights.

No. They are the best at what they do. Doubles specialists are usually always at the end of most tournaments they play.

If Serena, Venus, Petrova, Mauresmo, Kuznetsova played week in week out as doubles only players, the rankings would be different.

Even Safina has a slam doubles title and Dementieva has reached a final or two. If singles players played doubles even if they aren't really good volleyers they have a shot to be there. Azarenka just played a slam final too.

Let the entire Top 16 singles players play doubles the entire 2010 and see where doubles specialists end up. There is no comparison.

Dave.

Serena, Venus, Petrova, Kuznetsova, Azarenka, Dementieva etc. are not just singles players though, they are good at both. All of those apart from the WS at once stage played doubles full time and none of them got to no.1 and they were beaten by doubles specialists.

There is no comparison you are right, the top doubles specialists are better at doubles than the top singles specialists, obviously. (e.g. Black/Huber def. Ivanovic (singles specialist)/Lisicki 6-1 6-2 in Eastbourne).

jubliant11
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:34 PM
Obviously playing you will eventually lose to someone.

Australian - Williams Sisters.
IW - Zvonareva/Azarenka.
Miami - Kuznetsova/Mauresmo.
French - Azarenka was in the final.
Wimbledon - Williams Sisters.

When the top singles players unite and play well they overcome any expertise. The day in day out doubles tour is a joke in this era. When the top players come together at big events even outside of the WS, it is no contest.

Dave.
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:40 PM
Nah, the rankings don't lie, most of the top singles players have losing records against Black and Huber and most of the other top doubles players.

Azarenka is more of a doubles player than a singles player, she has had more doubles success, so bringing her up is useless. Kuznetsova, Mauresmo, Zvonareva, WS are crossover players too.

jubliant11
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:45 PM
Like I said. The majority of the big titles have gone to the top singles players. That speaks for itself.

Venus/Serena are Top 10 and have only played 3 tournaments.

The day in day out doubles tour is a joke.

Have Black/Huber even won a major this year? No.

Dave.
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:48 PM
Black/Huber are US Open champions.

Venus/Serena are top doubles players and are rightfully in the top 10 with 2 grand slams this year.

If you think the doubles tour is a joke that's fine but it's your opinion, and I'm not quite sure what you're doing in the doubles forum.

jubliant11
Jul 5th, 2009, 07:50 PM
They haven't won a major THIS year.

Anyways. We can agree to disagree. Everything tells the story. Singles players have taken the overwhelming majority of the major events this year.
