View Full Version : Safe to say we have our top 8 for 2009 YEC?

The only question is how serious Vera's injury. If she has to take another month or two off, then probably one spot is available for grabs.

It is probably the earliest I could remember we had such certainty

who do you think will do so much better than the current top 7 or 8 (depending on Vera's state) to take a spot? Care to share?

Safina and Jankovic have tons of points to defend this year, including a USO semi and a USO final, respectively.

After about 2/3 of 2009 season it seems that we already know all 8 YEC 2009 players... but that is not the case here! According to new rules for YEC now works same "BEST OF 16" rules like for regular WTA rankings so Caroline Wozniacki with already played 15 events is not so sure at all and also Zvonareva has big injury problems in last two months and that still continue. All that give chances to players like Ivanovic, Jankovic or Sharapova (Radwanska?, Mauresmo?, Stosur?, Cibulkova?...) to play in YEC-Doha if find better shape and reach good august-october results.

Current YEC2009 RACE:
6601 (11) - Dinara Safina
5957 (10) - Serena Williams
4262 (11) - Svetlana Kuznetsova
3975 (13) - Elena Dementieva
3840 (10) - Victoria Azarenka
3605 ( 9) - Venus Williams
3500 (15) - Caroline Wozniacki
2681 ( 8) - Vera Zvonareva
---------------current TOP8----------
2067 (14) - Virginie Razzano
1962 (16) - Marion Bartoli
1891 (12) - Jelena Jankovic
1881 ( 9) - Ana Ivanovic
1862 (13) - Agnieszka Radwanska
1776 (10) - Amelie Mauresmo
1753 (12) - Samantha Stosur
1728 (11) - Dominika Cibulkova
1492 (12) - Na Li
1452 (15) - Anabel Medina Garrigue
1422 (15) - Carla Suarez Navarro
1421 (11) - Sabine Lisicki
1406 (15) - Daniela Hantuchova
1378 (15) - Elena Vesnina
1301 (11) - Nadia Petrova
1236 (14) - Jie Zheng
1221 (14) - Flavia Pennetta
...
850 ( 7) - Maria Sharapova

Serena , Safina , Dementieva are pretty much safe , although expect Serena to pull out with a knee injury in her second match in Round Robin at the latest.

The current race to the YEC is (including wimbledon points):
1-Safina- 6601
2-Serena- 5957
3-Kuznetsova- 4262
4- Demetieva- 3975
5- Azarenka- 3840
6- Venus- 3605
7- Wozniacki- 3500
8-Zvonareva- 2681
9-Razzano- 2067
10- Bartoli- 1962
11- Jankovic-1891
12- Ivanovic- 1881
13- Radwanska- 1862
14- Mauresmo- 1776
15- Stosur- 1753

The top 7 in the race are looking good to make it. That #8 could be up for grabs depending on the seriousness of Vera's ankle. I don't think Razzano, Bartoli, or Jankovic are going to be a threat to make it. A strong end to the season by Ivanovic or Radwanska might get them in there.

safina even if she does not win a match for the whole remaining year should remain in the top 8 to qualify for yec. its mathematically still possible that she does not qualify for yec but very unlikely.

This year YEC players will be based on the best of 16 ranking, not race! 7 players will be entered directly and 8th might be as well but they might choose the 8th themself.

Two things:

Wozniacki doesn't have much room to go up because she will only get one additional tournament counting to her ranking. From there, any improvement she makes will have to come from a really stellar performance that would replace one of the tournaments that is counting right now.

Secondly, a 1500 point lead last year would have been very solid, but the tour DOUBLED points this year, so that's really equivalent to about 750 points, and we still have two mandatory tournaments and three premier-5 tournaments left, not to mention a grand slam. There's PLENTY of room if a player makes a good run.

Wozniacki already loses 70 points as she played 9 tournaments out of Slams and Premier Mandatorys and only 8 smaller tournaments will count.

There is a huge difference between Ana and Jelena right now. Ana is showing positive signs and Jelena 'needs to take a break.'

Don't forget Kim Clijsters. Kim is a great hard court player, former US Open Champion, and plays a lot of tournaments. If Kim wins the US Open, plays really well at other tournaments and earns enough points to qualify for the YEC, the WTA might make an exception and allow her to qualify because she was pregnant at the time she retired.

What the fuck is Razzano doing up there?

Dubai, R4 of both French and Wimbledon now. She has been quietly being above average for a player of her ranking.

Serena and Safina are locks. Dementieva should very well qualify bar her not playing for the rest of the year. Venus should very well qualify with a few more good tournaments. Azarenka is in for sure. Kuznetsova should be in.

There are 2 spots that can still be taken, but someone would have to have a massive change in form.

i think the top 8 are safe tbh, as long as vera is fit enough to play, even if she plays average she should be ok.
i cant see the good players outside the top 8 ie ivanovic, jankovic etc regaining top form so top 8 as it is for me

btw wozniacki is playing a lot...future injuries-look at janko, masha, clijsters etc
