Serena played well, but Venus played uninspired tennis and deserved to lose. :o

Congrats to Serena. Strong serving and solid-to-strong ground-stroking.

Venus needs to develop her serve-and-volley, transition and net game to challenge a calm, confident and well playing Serena. That point to set up the 2nd championship point said it all.

Stop fighting your gifts, V.

And Serena: keep developing your own. Beautiful re-commitment to the game and your self since that loss last year!

Serena was just in full flight today and although Venus played well and gave it her best, baby sis was just a little too hungry today.

This was one of the first times where I felt relaxed and confident going into the final. I think it worked to Serena's advantage that Venus was viewed by most as the favorite, which in turn helped take some pressure off. Today Serena was all business.

I said it one and I'll say it again, Serena's best on any surface is better than Venus'- even on GRASS!

Thank U Serena for giving your fans so much to be happy about!!!!

Jul 4th, 2009, 02:44 PM
Venus played so badly compared to her last few matches, making silly errors, serving poorly, and everything just fell apart. No self-belief whatsoever. Serena was solid enough, served well, yet still made basic errors off both wings and was overtly tentative on championship points, but Venus gifted them to her.

Terrible match, and the winner comes out, winning ugly.

That“s great, but this was just bad, Venus!
Maybe she wanted to give Serena a nice gift..terrible match!

I hate it when Serena wins GS, makes her attitude even worse, which is almost not possible :o

Well, not that she hasnt won Wimbledon, I hope Venus is even more motivated now for the US Open!
Good luck for the HC season, Venus!

Congrats Serena!!! :clap2: She was just too good and too strong for Venus. It helped Serena having to face challenges like Azarenka and Dementieva. Serena proved her worth and mettle throughout the tournament, especially with those two matches and it's one reason she's lifting that dish.

Congrats Serena!!!! :woohoo: Wimbledon #3 and overall slam count now up to #11.... next up #12 in New York! :)

Congrats to Serena! :yeah: Great match and wonderful serving - that serve is the GOAT. I wonder how much Venus's knee had to do with this; she has moved great despite the strapping all tournament long, but you need to be at 100% to beat Serena Williams. It was still a great run though.

Congrats Serena

I'm really really sad for Venus. Wimbledon is her garden and she played like shit. Her serve was weak and her groudstrokes were also really bad. This was her worst match at wimbledon in YEARS.
And Venus was also really sad at the end while Serena was showing her trophy.

I hope Venus will win another slam. her season was really bad. She has to win the us open.
And this final, apart from the tie break and the last game was bad. It was all about serving. And the fact that Venus makes a DF on the only breakpoint of the match shows it.

My heart was broken watching Venus losing this match.

Rooted for Serena in the 1st, then was rooting for Venus in the 2nd. Sad that Serena just shut Venus out altogether.

Serena is moving closer to that top 5 GOAT category, if she isn't already in it. For me she is the best player of all time.

venus needs a shrink, because that performance was unbecoming of her, her worst in over 2 years at wimbledon. the body language was off, the game face was never on. At no point did i ever feel she really really wanted to beat serena today.

Venus wasn't able to beat Serena today. I think some fans, mainly Venus, need to acknowledge that Venus can be beaten. That she can be beaten at Wimbledon, and can be beaten because the other opponent, here it's Serena, is better and if the age old excuse is Venus lets her feelings for Serena come into the match and she didn't try hard enough then you're saying Venus is unprofessional and really shouldn't show her face on the tennis court. Which is it?

Serena played really solid today and deserved to win. It wasn't Venus' day today. Her knee injury has become an issue but Venus is too much of a professional to use it as an excuse. Venus needs to take time off after this Wimbledon.

On last night's Wimbledon Update, Mary Carillo said that Oracene and Richard both told her that Venus was having issues with her knee but told Carillo to ask Venus because they didn't want Venus to yell at them. You could tell that Venus' movement was affected.

Congrats to Serena on her 11th slam (too bad she lost to Sveta at RG). Excellent serving. Outrageous serving the last couple matches. Really great movement, too. She played so much better today than yesterday, even with her difficulties with Venus' serve. Venus actually did play well, despite the really negative comments in this thread. However, Venus' movement was not as good as in previous matches; I think the knee wrap is more significant than she was willing to admit. I guess we all knew that. I just hope we don't hear that she has to have surgery in the next week. This was a bit of a strange match for V/S, what with the lack of rallies. When it comes to S and V, I always expect a tussle like they had at USO 2008.

Now, Serena and Venus, get that doubles trophy! I hope NBC shows the match, though I am so sick of gossipy Ted Robinson and excessively praising Mary Carillo. Oh, damn, Mary Carillo is interviewing Venus now.

Serena is such a champion. You know, she comes back from the brink against Dementieva in the semi and then just brings all her intensity and power into a final. That's quite something. I haven't actually seen Serena hit that hard, with such depth and width for some time. Probably since that final in '02. No stupid topspin or ungainly defense. Just incredible controlled and accurate hitting. Her serving was AWESOME, i've never seen Venus get aced so often. That was the world number 1 on display there.

Venus started to wilt under the pressure, very much like in '02 which i why i make the comparison with Serena's hitting also. Indeed she had that open court forehand at 4-3, but i don't think that would've been conclusive. She served poorly in that second set though, and Serena was obviously going to take advantage. I feel for Venus because i always pull for her, but just not her day. Sure she didn't play her best, but does anyone against Serena in the majority of Slam finals? She'll be back though. Still a five time champ;)

Bravo to Serena though. I can't believe anyone can contest who is number 1 now. 3 out of the 4 Slams Serena has won.

Venus didn't even face one break point the entire first set, but still lost it; that's very discouraging for any player at any level. In the second set, she knew full well that a break point on her serve was a virtual match point, and that got to her, as would have gotten to any player, male or female. Serena put on a serving clinic today, one that I hope other women pick up on.

She smiled. I have seen every match, game and set by venus, and she has not cracked a single smiled. she laugh twice on court when she lost the point wtf? she showed zero agression at the net. serena served great in last years final also, and venus still dominated. She was completey flat in this match. this is not like the u.s open last year when serena earned that match. Like i said, all the commenters could way was that this match felt wierd. serena was going for it, venus not at all. I'm sorry but venus embrass herself as much as safina did, and i love venus, but i'm not going to cut her slack for not showing up. she showed up at the u.s 2008, she did not show up here. What a dud. Slept literally through most of the first till the tiebreak, then woke up to catch the match, and slept figuratively through the rest of it. Venus looked gutted, as she should be following such an uninspired performance. She never looked at ease throughout the match.

Serena played her standard game - outstanding serving, aggressive hitting - her groundstrokes were more solid than usual. Serena's footwork improves towards the end of majors, whether by match practice or deliberate effort, and it's no coincidence that that's when her game is at its most devastating. All credit to her: it takes a lot to execute a simple game plan to such perfection in a high-pressure final. Venus on the other hand was just erratic from the back of the court. She took a step away from her favoured flat strokes to remedy this, but as a result did not even get the usual penetration and pace from her groundstrokes. This allowed Serena to dictate the points easily.

Venus's movement and balance was lacklustre and detracted from her grasscourt defense, which is one of her biggest weapons on the grass. The serve kept her in the match early in the second (and presumably in the first set that I did not see) and when the serve "went to Hawaii" midway through the second she had nothing left to rely on. She did roll in a few slow first serves on key points (out of safety rather than strategy) and actually got Serena to mistime a few of those by taking the ball too early. Serena reads the direction of Venus's serves well, but her timing can be instinctual given that Venus's cannonball serves are so fast most of the time, and the serves reach the baseline with remarkable temporal consistency. Mixing up the serves is something Venus should emulate from Serena.

Rally patterns: Owing to big serves, few rallies started from neutral; few rallies were long. As with last year, Serena leaned towards the percentage option of going crosscourt to open the court, with Venus preferring the riskier DTL. With the DTL strategy, the aim is to yield up a short ball in one sudden strike. This year, Serena anticipated the ball better and got to the DTL screechers in time to return deep shot after deep shot. On the other hand, Venus wasn't hitting the DTLs as well. Less pace, less conviction, and most importantly less accuracy. When she went for the lines, she tended to pull the ball wide; and when she played closer to centremark, it just wasn't good enough to put Serena under pressure.

Court speed: Felt faster than last year. This played into Serena's more aggressive game of taking the ball early. Many times, we saw Venus backing off from a slightly high-bouncing ball, which gave Serena time to recover.

She had the 2 break points, and missed some easy shots, she smiled when she lost one a point in the tiebreak. she served well, but her play lack all passion. she didn;t act like she wanted to be out there.
The match felt weird because there was no flow to it; with the exception of Venus' last two service games, it was easy hold after easy hold after easy hold. You obviously don't play tennis.

none of them played like they can today, because Serena really could have won 6-4 6-2.

3 of the last 4 is mighty impressive.:worship:

Venus, no fight today, no intention to take the match in charge, such a disappointment after the previous performance, gutted.

I agree. Vee's serve was shaky as hell through out the 1st set too but she was getting away with it coz Serena was missing that forehand return a lot. That was really the only blemish for her in what was otherwise a superb performance from Serena. Congrats to her on a well deserved victory. Her serving was superb and her intensity just amazing(please take note Vee).

Vee on the otherhand gave her most uninspired, flat performance at Wimbledon for a very long time. It was disheartening as a fan to see Vee already look defeated at the start of the 2nd set. There was just no fire or hunger in her eyes today:sad:

Strange match.

Congrats to Serena for serving beautifully and playing within herself. She finally won another Wimbledon and good for her.

Venus... well you played a pretty bad match. She looked so lackluster and uncertain of herself. She was returning horribly and making stupid mistakes. She really didn't bring her best today, which she needed.

The problem with this match was the lack of rallies (until the last game) and the desire from Venus wasn't there. The whole match I felt like Serena wanted it and was never going to give up. Venus didn't bring that same desire. Another huge difference was the serve. Second set, Venus didn't have a serve at all. Serena's was brilliant.

I'm sad to see Venus lose because I support both sisters and I want them both to win. I was pulling for Venus because Serena has two slams under her belt right now. I'm still happy Serena won and she has her 11th slam. It's extremely exciting and she's playing extremely well. Going into the U.S. Open, I'm going to be cheering for an All-Williams final and Venus as the victor, she deserves one slam this year.

Good Wimbledon, all in all, Venus and Serena dominated the early rounds and played great matches, I just wish the final could have been as epic. Best grass court players of their generation! :worship:

It wasn't a great match. It's just so hard to watch them play each other in finals. My stomach churns, because I cheer for both of them yet only one can win. I hope Venus can be inspired and really focus on winning the USO. Serena's serve was just too good. She was using the slice out wide on the deuce court so well. Venus needs to bring her hardcourt game the rest of the summer. I know she can do it.

As I was watching this, especially the first set, I couldn't help but think, "Why can't the other women serve like this?" The serve is the only shot you have complete control over, and Serena gave a perfect example of how you can use it to your advantage. That was Impressive with a capital I.

When Serena puts on a serving display of that nature it's going to be tough for any player. But you also have to factor in that Serena was challenged in the qtrs and semis. People are forgetting that the match against Azarenka and Elena really prepared her for the final.

Some Venus fans need to chill and show some class like their fsvourite and be graciuos in defeat. I will agree that this was not a good final (and I can say that being an WS fan), Venus was playing so flat but try and remember who was on the other side of the net. Theres isn`t much you can do when your opponent is in the zone and serving like that. Serena serves were awesome, especially those aces and a lesser player than Venus would have been blown off the court 6-0, 6-0. Sometimes you must admit and give credit where its due, even if it hurts. The better Williams sister won today and she deserved it. Venus will get the chance to win her 6th but even if she doesn`t, she is still one of the greatest grass-court player.

Congratulations to Serena! Go for the USO!

I hate that just because Venus played a poor game that people are saying it's fixed. Oh please, I doubt many people would be saying that if Serena was the one who played a poor game. And  @ "family love" coming out again.

Q. You've spoken about the separation of your dad as a parent and as a coach. Can you talk a little bit about how you separate Serena as the sister and then as the rival?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Well, it's real easy to separate it when you get a serve at about 127 and it comes back as a winner. You soon realize you're playing against an awesome player, and you better really get ready on your toes. So that's exactly when you separate it.

Good post

I hate when the sisters play and their fans turn on each other. Venus played horrible but I agree she did not play horrible all match. She was good up to 2/2 in the second. Serena was superb throughout and never gave Venus a chance to settle and get into a groove. Only glimpse Venus has was at 4/3 in the first and then it was lights out.

Yes I'm bitter that Venus did not win but I don't see the need for Vee fans to not acknowledge that Serena played so well she never gave Venus a chance to pick up her play. Of course I still think Venus is the better grass court player but when champions like Serena Williams want something they will mow down the best to get it and Serena did just that today.

people think the only way serena can win off the ground is if the other person is playing horribly...so obviously venus got beat off the ground = she was playing horribly...

all that happened is that unlike her sf, serena turned up mentally dialed in and put on a serving clinic, and was confident off the ground, determined not to let last year happen again

Venus played absolutely horrible. That was one of the most boring and dead Wimbledon finals I've ever seen. Just awful really.

I must give credit to Serena who played really well. Her first and second serves were so good throughout the entire match and her forehand returned from vacation. She also defended really well. She was just very impressive.

Still Venus handed her this match on a silver platter and was just too nice in her interview. I don't know where she goes from here, but that was a train wreck of a performance. But like I said Serena played really well and 100% deserved the win.

Venus NEEDS to win the US Open to save her year, otherwise she will end they year on a wimper. I don't think she will but she NEEDS to. All of her losses this decade in New York have been to the best player in the draw (Serena, Davenport (even though she didn't win, she was the best), Clijsters, and Serena again)

Congratulations to Serena, but for me Venus was still the star of the day with her runner-up speech and accepting the loss, just pure class. :worship: Shame she couldn't win today but Serena was too good. Although I wish Venus had saved that match for 2000 or 2005.

called it serena in 2...but all the people said serena was moving poorly, and bla bla bla....whatever!!

Yeah, people were trying to make out that Serena didn't play a good/outstanding match against Dementieva, that all she could do was serve aces and that she missed too many forehands and wasn't moving well. This match proved that Serena has indeed been playing her best this Wimbledon.

MISS S. WILLIAMS- THE 2009 WIMBLEDON CHAMPION!!!!

When Venus' movement is about as good as Sharapova's and 90% of her serves are going to the middle of the court, she's not exactly preventing Serena from doing anything. Serena definitely took the match but Venus certainly showed no resistance.

Serena was just too good on serve. Venus was hanging there tough too in the 1st set...got her two bp's. Everybody points to the forehand pass she missed on the second one, but I think Serena's second serve (barely getting the line..wow!).. CLUTCH!

And then finally Serena played a good tiebreaker. 12 aces..not much you can do.

Wimby 06, arguably AO 07, USO 08.

Ok if those are your definition of great. IMO the finals you quoted were good but by now means SUPERB. Serena was in the zone at AO '07 but it was not a classic match on both sides of the net. It as a 6/1 6/2 drubbing. US Open '08 the same in that Serena was not going to be denied. Yeah Jelena was good but it was not classic.

Venus is a great player. She is a multi-demensional player. PERIOD! She was getting to and returning Serena's balls with interest most of the match. But at key moments, Serena took control and shifted up a gear.
And Serena needed more than jusy her serving to defeat Venus today. I mean that first set was proof enough that more than serving was required. Good points...the match against Dementieva prepared Serena to play pressure points better. Last year she wasn't tested and hence as soon as she faced a bp, she crumbled.
