Cheb Mami, internationally known world musician, most famous for his song "Desert Rose" which he sung together with Sting has been convicted by a French court and is sent to prison for 5 years.

He was accused of having threatened, having kept imprisoned and having tortured his former girlfriend when finding out she was pregnant.

F$cking bastard. He can screw her without being married to her, but if she gets pregnant he suddenly finds his "morals".

Prosecutors said Mami and his accomplices drugged and abducted his former girlfriend, a French photographer whose name was withheld, a few days after she told him she was pregnant.

She told the court that she was taken to a villa in Algiers, where three people tried to perform an abortion.

However, upon returning to France, she discovered she was still pregnant and later gave birth to a girl, who is now three.

"They insulted me.. They threw me on the mattress and tore off my pants....I was given three shots with needles, one woman pressed against my stomach and the other put her hand in my vagina and started scraping," she testified in court.

I knew a girl from Algeria who was here in the US for school. She was very fun and part of my group of friends. One day she went back to Algeria to see her family, never came back, and some friends heard from her. Supposedly, her family would not let her return and they had her basically locked up. I cannot imagine what it is like in Algeria for women.

He

"...said he did not love the woman and felt "trapped" when she told him she was pregnant.
"I was ashamed to have an illegitimate child. A child should be born from a union. I didn't want this child," he told the court."

Before the trial, "...He denies any involvement in the alleged abortion and says he is being persecuted because he is a successful Arab star."

Another source: The singer -- who has worked with the likes of Police frontman Sting and hit-spinning producer Nile Rodgers -- denies the charge, saying he is the target of a European media witch hunt due to his success as an "Arab star".

Denies any involvement.

Blames it on persecution of Arabs.
