AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2002:
Martina: The champion's renaissance

By Robert Kelly, Victoria, Australia

A quality intrinsic to any champion is resilience, we need only look as far back as the embattled Graf, the brutalised Seles, the pioneering Navratilova, the once outmoded Evert, the revitalised Capriati or the slimmed down Davenport. Each returned, from the depths of professional or personal despair, to recapture their form and emphatically etch their names in history. Martina Hingis is a champion, and her victory at Australian Open 2002 will encapsulate the very essence of a champion's resilience.

The effortless brilliance of Hingis' 1997 season highlighted her talent, yet by the end of 1998, a season marked by complacency and the arrival of more powerful nemeses, Hingis had been "swamped". Although she returned in 1999 fitter and more focused, ending that season ranked number 1, her vulnerability was apparent. 2000 and 2001 failed to reap a Grand Slam title. By the end of 2001 her ranking had slipped to number 4 and her mystique had vanished as she was increasingly over powered at the top level.

After witnessing this consistent decline how can I select her as top pick for a tournament in which she is likely to face numerous power hitters?

The answer is simple; statistics never lie. Statistics dictate that despite her inability to win a Grand Slam since the Australian Open 1999 she has consistently reached the latter rounds including three times to the semi finals or beyond in 2001. Even more impressive is her record in Australia where in her past 5 visits she has triumphed on three occasions and been runner-up twice while reaching 5 consecutive finals. She loves Australia, the rebound ace and crucially heat and humidity do not perturb her.

Add to this the fact that none of her major rivals, with the exception of Lindsay Davenport, have shown that they can consistently produce high quality tennis this early in the season. The Williams sister's arrive unprepared and have never shown their best tennis in Australia, including several early exits. Capriati's fitness remains in question, evidenced by her dismal late season form, and is ripe for a letdown.

Unlike many of the mercurial heavy hitters, we can be sure that Martina will be fit and ready to tackle the first major of the year. Hingis is a champion and after almost three years of tumult and soul searching, like the great champion's of the past she is poised to mount a fight back.

Here is for LAZY BOY, Jorin! I did mine not on Martina, but a young up and comer named Su-Wei.
Did I mention she's only 15?
By Cing Lian, Florida, USA

She made her marks on the World's Top Junior Tour and the WTA tour. Her small frame of 48 kg and 1.62 m disguises the lethal strokes of a double-hander on both sides. Her game is very much the mirror-image of a young Monica Seles. She has an excellent game vision and the capacity to move her opponents around. Did I mention she's only 15?

Her great season started this year at the Australian Open Junior tournament where she surprised most with her quarterfinal three-set lost to Sunitha Rao of the USA. She rose in the Junior ranks which are ruled by 18, 17, and 16 year olds, to reach a high of 18 in singles and 8 in doubles. Did I mention she is only 15 years old?

Su-Wei started to play ITF events this year. She has an unbeaten record, winning all four of the challengers she's played. She also made her WTA Tour debut in Bali. She had to get through two qualifying rounds just to get into the main draw. She did that and a little more. She reached the semifinals beating top 100 players like Rachel McQuillan and Shinobu Asagoe. Her impressive debut was stopped in the semis in a fantastic three-set match lost against another up and comer Angelique Widjaja. Did I mention she's only 15?

Her second WTA tournament was in Pattaya. Again, she had to qualify but that didn't hinder her spirits! Su-Wei reached the main draw and was a force to be reckoned with. She got through to the quarterfinals beating quality players like Yoon-Jeong Cho and Julia Vakulenko. In the quarterfinals, she ran into the 8th seed and the 55th player in the world, Rossana De Los Rios. Su-Wei blew Rossana off the court in the first set winning 6-1 easily. Rossana took the second. Su-Wei led 4-2 in the third only to have lost the match 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 to a much more experienced player. Did I mention she's only 15?

Unranked last year, Su-Wei rose all the way to 165 in the rankings with four ITF titles and an impressive Tour debut. Even the age restriction won't hamper her play! Next year, she will be able to play at least 13 tournaments and make her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open for which she has to qualify. Everyone then, will notice the talent of this young girl!

I'm not lazy. I just didn't want to go back to that Sanex website. I hate Sanex.

Impressive Work the Pea!!!! can't believe I'm praising you but you deserve it.grrrr...

Thanks for introducing Su Wei to us, she's still young, thus I hope she'd change her more dominant hand into a single stroke. As you can see, Monica tried to hit singles strokes already 'coz she has seen the disadvantage of having double handed strokes on both sides but she's not young enough to change easily. Sure Su Wei can.

anyway, miranda may have a big mouth but has poor eyesight, she wouldn't find out without your help. *LOL* ladies are louder than men 'coz they have two mouths while men are smarter than women coz they have to heads; two heads are better than one.
