Hard to believe we got our asses handed to us by Costa Rica just a few weeks ago. This bodes well for Gold Cup and World Cup.

The team seems to have finally jelled a bit. But we're still too soft on defense. Where is John Doyle when you need him?

I had a nasty feeling all they'd done was wake Brazil up and persuade them to take a slightly silly final seriously. Which looked to be the case.

oh Max do you really think USA´s team is soft on defense??

I think that is USA´s safety.

I think the problem is the midfield and a strategic plan in there

USA was soft on defense until this competition. :) Our midfield is watching the ball fly overhead or roll underfoot to the front runners; I'm OK with that for another decade or two since we really don't have guys who can hold the ball in the middle (like to get another look at Adu  ) - just get on with the attack and if that doesn't work - back to defense.

i'm happy the usa did well at this tier 4 tournament :p
but wanna bet the next time they're in south africa, they'll suck as usual.
i hope they're in the same group as The Netherlands during the world cup... :D
but we'll probably get tougher teams than that

Good showing from the USA but I think it's important to remember for any of the teams here almost 1/2 of the teams here will probably NOT be at next year's world cup ( Iraq,New Zealand, and Egypt).

Jun 29th, 2009, 12:38 PM
Oh an Brazil always finds a way to win, they could be down 3-0 with 10 minutes to go and they would tie it a 3-3 and then win in overtime or penalty kicks.

I think in the second half we reverted to the bad habits we've shown against Costa Rica (1-3) Italy (1-3) Brazil (0-3) earlier, not the solid D we played against Egypt (3-0) and Spain (2-0).

Too many forwards getting goal side of defenders--you've got to use your body to keep that from happening. Not enough physical tackling (not dirty, but hard challenges that make a forward want to give you that extra space and dish instead of challenge you). Conceding too much on the flanks.

What can I say? I was an old school defender. If you don't knock people down, you're not doing your job. If you leave the pitch without grass stains on your ass, you're not doing your job. We were doing that in the first half. Not in the second. And we paid the price.

Well, we're not in the same league as the mighty Oranje, but the US's World Cup history is kind of interesting.

In World Cups not played in Europe, we've done pretty well:

Uruguay, 1930--Semfinals
Brazil, 1950--eliminated, but upset England 1-0
USA, 1994--2nd Round
Japan/S. Korea, 2002--Quarterfinals

Compared to:

Italy, 1934--eliminated, 0 points
Italy, 1990--eliminated, 0 points
France, 1998--eliminated, 0 points
Germany, 2006--eliminated, 1 point (only point off Italy, mind you).

So if form holds, you have to like us to do some damage in South Africa. And it does look like there will be some odd qualifiers and weak groups. I can see us making Rnd 2, but not much more than that.

I can't speak from ALL Euros, but yes, us Dutch people are very insecure. Especially about football.

And me saying i'd love to get the USA in our group at the wolrd cups actually means: OH MY GOD I AM SO SCARED, WHAT IF THEY BEAT US!!! CAUSE ALL THOSE PLAYERS I SAW AT THE CONFEDERATIONS CUP WERE SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
PLEASE LET US GET FRANCE, ITALY and ROMANIA like we did at the Euro 2008 tournament!!!!! That would be so much better than getting the mighty USA.

Look at you, the Dutch are the best team to never win the World Cup and you're all, "Bring It On USA!" :weirdo:

That reaks of insecurity.

It really is pathetic. :)

If you had any class you could have just said, "good job"...but of course you wouldn't do that...

I'm not insecure about the abilities of our footy team.
Especially not compared to the usa's team.
So we never won the world cup, big deal, that doesn't mean we're not a good team.

I don't believe I qualified your insecurities as limited to the ability of your soccer team; which has just as many World Cups as the USA. :p

And there you go comparing chalk to cheese to make yourself feel better about whatever is driving you to take a piss out of USA Soccer; the Dutch won at baseball in some event recently and Americans thought it was hilarious, who cares. Well obviously for some reason, you do. :p

I can tell "Poor Baby." is working on you as you keep coming back :haha:

I'm actually not gonna come back any more
But you do have to know i wasn't coming back cause you kept on saying "Poor baby"
I came back cause you didn't make any sense.

All i said is that the usa might have done well at the conf. cup, but that they'll most likely suck again at the world cup and that i wouldn't mind having them in our group at the world cup.
Which would be a nice change from groups we had to deal with in the recent past
(France, Italy, Romania @ euro 2008)
(Argentina, Serbia, Ivory Coast @ world cup 2006)
(Germany, Czech Republic and Latvia @ euro 2004)
(2002 we weren't there, haha, funny, let's have a laugh)
(France, Czech Republic and Denmark @ euro 2000)

If that upsets you, i am truly sorry! :)

The Confederations Cup is good, but I wouldn't really take much into results

The USA might go well in South Africa next year, they could play like what they did in 02, or they could play like what they have in the other World Cups

You had 8 teams, 3 of which will more than likely not be back in South Africa next year (I will run down Bourke Street in a mankini if NZ make it), you just can't read too much into it. There was a lot of talent not on show there, and I think when we've got a full show, we'll see a much different result

Well you've certainly changed your condescending tone now. :p

Nothing you said was upsetting; it was amusing in its laden insecurity, as I believe I stated numerous times.

I'm just saying Dutchies talking shit to Americans about soccer is like Americans talking shit to Dutchies about baseball - its kinda pathetic and comes off extremely insecure...

...not a hard concept to grasp. ;)
