Sep 9th, 2002, 10:29 PM
Noooooooo! Aside from a "few" slams and the tourney in Miami, what on earth has Serena done to warrant this award? Pray tell
Sep 9th, 2002, 11:36 PM
Oh lawd thats my girl!!! She looks awfully cute. :hearts: :hearts:
Congratulations Serena. You are the best player in the world!!!!
Go Serennnaa!!1 :bounce: :bounce:
Calabar, Serena has won practically on every surface and she's beaten down the best to win them. She's won in Miami, Scottsdale and Rome. Plus she reached the latter stages of other tournaments rarely losing before the quarters.

Sep 10th, 2002, 01:04 AM
Sorry, everyone, but I hope that you all read the thread closely because as chairman, I personally awarded SERENA the Williams Tennis Association version of the award.
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has not formally awarded their title to SERENA as of yet.
However, SERENA getting this title from that organization is just about a slam dunk deal. Unless they decide to give the title to Anna instead. :)
Sep 12th, 2002, 10:47 AM
You go Serena, you deserve it:bounce:
Sep 12th, 2002, 10:52 AM
congrats serena, it would be weird if she doesn't get it!
Sep 12th, 2002, 11:34 AM
Irma - I remember that a player that did not get the award, but won two Grand slams and defeated the player that won the award every time that they played.
Serena Miz Gully

Hey Tee---check out the latest Ebony....Post the pics please!!!! Serena is awesome. She and Venus remain close!!!!
Sep 13th, 2002, 09:51 AM
With the WTA's track record they'll probably give the award to Tauziat...
Yes, Mr Rexx thedre have been some 'weird' choices over the years...
I remember a doubles player who won 10 titles in a year, had the number one ranking, had the best GS record of the year and STILL she and her partner failed to pick up doubles team of the year honours, losing to a team who only entered two tour tournies all year (winning one)! Bizarre I think you'll agree! Or not. ;)
Anyway I think all sensible people can agree that Serena clearly is the player of the year, by a long way. :)
Sep 13th, 2002, 10:01 AM
I think that I remember that incident, Mr. Ba.
It seem that the team in question had piled up points playing nobodies, but the WTA gave the award to the team that could and did defeat everyone that they faced in much higher championship level competition.
The inferior team also showed poor sportsmansship by excessively bitching about an award that everyone knew that they did not deserve.
Anyway, most sensible individuals believe the SERENA WILLIAMS is the clear choice for the Player of the Year award. :)
Sep 13th, 2002, 10:18 AM
I remember it well Mr Rexx...those two girls ranked 1 and 2 in the world at the end of that year actually said very little about the foolish snub.
However, when one of their fans dared to point out how unfair the award was he was ridiculed by this arrogant, big mouthed American bloke with no sense. Do you know him Mr Rexx???? :D ;)
As well being the dominant team throughout the year, week in week out...the number 1 and 2 girls had the best GS record of ANY team, managing to enter all four GS tournies ending up with a record of...
QF - SF - F - W
The team that won the award this record at the GS titles...
No Entry - No Entry - W - QF ( I think)
Which is better? I know! Do you Mr Rexx? :p
Sep 13th, 2002, 10:35 AM
Yeah, the awarded team was best.
Everyone, including the whiners knew they were the lesser talented team.
Almost everyone, I guess. :P
Sep 13th, 2002, 02:50 PM
The award can not be based on some vague feeling of who is the most talented team, but on tournment results, in which category the 1 and 2 players in the world were WAY WAY WAY ahead of that other team.
Under your truly bizarre criteria the team of the year wouldn't actually have to play at all!!! Indeed outside of GS tournies they didn't play in ONE regular WTA event that year, never mind winning one!! Surreal...
Sep 14th, 2002, 04:11 AM
Mr. Ba, please look between my index finger and thumb. I am now playing a very sad song on the WORLD'S SMALLEST VIOLIN.
Sep 14th, 2002, 08:08 AM
Of course Mr Rexx, you've never whined about anything regarding your fave!
At least not every day.
Thankfully, at the time, most fans of your fave/s had the sense of fair play to say who the award should have really gone to.
Sadly you Mr Rexx are just too pig-headed to see sense.
Won 10 tour titles, the best of anyone by a distance.
Best record in non-GS tournies.
Had the number one ranking at the end of the year. (her partner at number 2)
Had the BEST overall GS record, often regarded as the key measure.
Won US Open.
Won 6 of her titles with main partner.
Won Olympic gold. ( Which by design is a tourney stripped of 90% of the top teams, and has a field weaker than a tier 1)
Entered no, zip, zilch, non-GS WTA tournaments the entire year.
Had a record of 1-0 against the number one team.
Even including the Olympics, entered only THREE tournments on the year! Winning two...picked up Team of the year honours.
Player A's record is better than Player B's. Simple as that.
Sep 14th, 2002, 10:14 AM
Yeah Mr. Ba, but in the end, the right team got the award.
Let's end this old story.
Sep 14th, 2002, 10:49 AM
you should have given the Williams Tennis Association Award to Venus 'coz Serena deserves the real one, which is Women's Tennis Association Award.
Sep 14th, 2002, 11:20 AM
FS - I am not authorized to award the Women's Tennis Association title to anyone. :) LOL
Sep 14th, 2002, 11:23 AM
LMAO obviously NOT.:D
Sep 14th, 2002, 02:07 PM
That's a lovely pic of Serena :)
When WTA does give the award, Serena deserves it more than anybody on the tour. What a successful year for her. Congrats!
