I noticed one fact:

3/4 of 2009 grass event winners are out in 1R

Shahar Peer def Maria Elena Camerin [Nottingham champion] 6:2 7:6(3)
Roberta Vinci def Magdalena Rybarikova [Birmingham champion] 6:3 6:3
Arantxa Parra Santonja def Tamarine Tanasugarn [s'Hertogenbosch champion] 6:4 6:4

also s'Hertogenbosch's runner-up is out:

Elena Vesnina def Yanina Wickmayer 6:1 6:1

Does it mean that caro Wozniacki is out tomorrow?:scared::confused:

It's been a disappointing day for players who did well in the earlier warm-up events, let's take a look:

50K Nottingham F: (3)Maria Elena Camerin def. (4)Stefanie Vogele 6-2, 4-6, 6-1

Wimby 1R: Shahar Peer def. Maria Elena Camerin 6-2, 7-6(3)
Wimby 1R: Stefanie Vogele vs. (3)Venus Williams :tape::help:

Birmingham F: (13)Magdalena Rybarikova def. (3)Na Li 6-0, 7-6(2)

Wimby 1R: Roberta Vinci def. Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-2
Wimby 1R: (19)Na Li vs. Galina Voskoboeva :confused:

Eastbourne F: (6)Caroline Wozniacki def. Virgine Razzano 7-6(5), 7-5

Wimby 1R: (9)Caroline Wozniacki vs. (WC)Kimiko Date-Krumm :hearts::hearts:
Wimby 1R: Virginie Razzano def. Tamira Paszek 6-0, 3-1 ret. :worship::worship:

s'Hertogenbosch F: Tamarine Tanasugarn def. (WC)Yanina Wickamayer 6-3, 7-5

Wimby 1R: Aranxta Parra-Santonja def. Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4, 6-4 :tape::o:sad:
Wimby 1R: Elena Vesnina def. Yanina Wickamayer 6-1, 6-1 :help::sad::eek:

They went 1-4 today :(

I expect wins out of Caroline and Na tomorrow, and Stef to go down to bring the total to 3-5 . Not great anyway. All these matches aside from Stefanie's and perhaps Maria Elena's I think many expected 1R wins. :fiery:

Great prediction, I'd love it to come true!

This is why using a grass formula is dumb for seeding.

Remember 2004? Sharapova won - but Pierce (she won s'Hertogenbosch) and Kuznetsova (Eastbourne) both lost their 1st rounders.

I hope not!

All in straights sets too. (MEC nearly got one but 5-1 lead is nothing for Shahar :p)

This is why the elite players usually don't play the week before a slam.

Very noticeable. Also surprising was the defeat of Alexandra Wozniak, who stormed into the Eastbourne semis to Schiavone.

I think that those three players just aren't capable at the moment of playing well week on week and the form was just not there this week.

What's shocking to me is that last year, Tammy played Surbiton, Birmingham, AND s'Hertogenbosch where she went through qualifying and won the tournament, only to turn it around to the QF ! It's hugely surprising and disappointing. She looked healthier this year, as last year she retired from a match at birmingham.

The curse of s'Hertogenbosch strikes again! The champions of 2004, 2005, 2006 and now 2009 all lost in the first round at Wimbledon.

Last year Radwanska and Tanasugarn did well at Wimbledon.

Jun 23rd, 2009, 12:50 AM
Tanasugarn, Wozniak, Wickmayer and Rybarikova which has great results during grass/09 season won just one set (all-together) today on opening day in Wimbledon...

And people here still complain about massive tanking cases during short grass-court preparation season

It's all for reason...

Ana will win Wimbledon:bounce::p

Radwanska won Eastbourne last year and made it to a QF at Wimbledon.
Tanasugarn won Rosmalen last year and made it to a QF at Wimbledon.

Jun 23rd, 2009, 01:04 AM
Wozniak should've won her match

Franny had a good grass season too so it was a tough draw for Aleks. Tough draws for the players except maybe for Tammy.

Jun 23rd, 2009, 01:10 AM
Aga and Nadia both went from the Eastbourne final to the W QF.
This year, Wozniacki and Razzano might go a long way.
Tammy was the strange result. She played well here last year, beat Zvonareva

Jun 23rd, 2009, 01:16 AM
didnt expect wickmayer to win but i thought the others would win, i think pre slam tournies are irrelevant for some and important for others. ultimately none of those players were contenders so who really gives a fuck...well me cos i had a bet on wozniak but thats not the point

Jun 23rd, 2009, 01:29 AM
Oh dear god. Wickmayer is pathetic - 2 games!?

Grassgoat also falls. :o :o :o

Very shocked Tammy lost. Big letdown after her tournament win last week.

now she must be really disappointed, and she should be. :awww:

Tammy is really sad. Wickmayer's score is quite harsh.

Aleks and Magda had much tougher draws.

the tanking theory gets stronger and stronger :o

This is why using a grass formula is dumb for seeding.

They only do that for the men's seeds. With the women's, it's at their discretion (typically they keep everything the same based on entry system rankings and will move up players like Venus in past years and Sharapova this year) .

But it is a strange trend I noticed today as well. On both the men's and women's sides, many players who did well in the lead-up events have lost on Day 1:
(with Haas in trouble with play delayed)

  Strange... bad omen for talents Murray and Wozniacki? Or are they too tough?
