Like the serving from Serena, the willingness to come to net, the improved footwork and stroke production from the French. Wish she was a bit more toned.

Silva wasn't bad, good Graf-like game there with the knee-bending BH slice and aggressive forehand.

just caught the 2nd.

Serena is starting to serve well again. really high % in the 2nd but more importantly she's hitting it harder, mixing it up better and placing it better than she has since Paris indoors.

Her return and groundstrokes were below average. Especially her return. I'm surprised at how far Serena stood back against Silva's 1st serve which were being rolled in at 82-88 mph at one time. :tape: Reminds me of Azarenka who rolls in her 1st at a around 90mph. Would like to see Serena be more aggressive on the return. and her movement was slow but she tends to be a little slow in the early rounds USO '08 excluded.

But fun match :worship:Serena!!!

Solid serving from Serena. Nothing special, but Neuza couldn't read her serve. Return of serve is her worst suit. Speaking of strengths, she didn't really have any, anyway: weakish forehand with late preparation, average serve, so-so movement and anticipation. The one thing she had going for her was the slice backhand that messed up Serena's rhythm.

Second set was close because Serena's return went AWOL which kept Neuza in her own service games. Neuza's strategy was to serve to Serena's backhand (she was getting burnt on the forehand) and it paid off when Serena failed to string two returns in a row.

I liked that Serena tried some serve-and-volleying, even though the only times she succeeded was when Neuza popped the return way up.

Anyway, I can't tell much from this match. The disparity in their levels was just too great for Serena to even be challenged.

Yeah, I think the tight 2nd set was good for her, because she got to hit lots of balls, which could only help her in the next match.

I love to see Neuza Silva's game in the 2nd set and i thought she's a young player n have a bright future but i'm wrong, she's not a new comer and her career is kinda mediocre lol

mediocre??

she reached the top150 this year...she was pratically off for 2 years between 2004 and 2006 due to a bad left wrist injury, that's why she just slices on her BH...she came back reguarly to the tour in 2006 and from then it was always rising up in the ranks, with a bunch of ITF titles and today it was her greatest moment of her career I'm sure.

so, you can't call it mediocre career, the majority of the players don't even play a MD Slam and she just did.

about the match, Neuza did well in the 2nd, altough Serena wasn't at her best...a shame these 2 UEs in the end by Neuza. Stil a nice fight by her :D

Say what? For someone with a 'weakish forehand', she hit some cracking shots in the 2nd set. You're right. She did. I'm checking out clips on youtube now. A large number of those came in a purple patch she hit from 3-all to 4-all 30-all (I missed those games). I think I was just remembering the bits where she flubbed her forehand into the net, wide, long or floated a across a looper which she got punished for. Probably in a match not against Serena, and where she'd more time to prepare, the strength of the forehand would come across more.

An adorable ugly bitch, IMO. She's charismatic. I wish her a better career in the future than what she had so far. Apparently a bad wrist injury prevented her to fulfill her potential.

This was the only women's match that the local sports station showed yesterday (+ a few games of Sharapova vs Kutuzova). Typical coverage from them: they almost never leave Centre Court (and when they pick Court 1, they remain there for the rest of the day), which can be either good or bad depending on who is playing there. At least they don't hop into every boring 5-setter involving German or French mid-ranked ATP scrubs like Eurosport does.

Silva fought well in the 2nd set but she had nothing to hurt Serena really. No fh, hit only sliced bh...It was that close cause Serena started making some errors.
Serena served well and seems in good shape.

Quite. I had seen her play before in televised challenger matches and at the Estoril Open this year and she hadn't looked this woefully underpowered. Which again shows how the assessment of a player's performance must take into account the level of competition.

Silva's 1st serve was sometimes well placed, and that was about it. Like most challenger-level players, she isn't used to return rocket serves such as those Serena hits and of course failed dismally at it throughout.

Serena can make a bunch of sloppy errors against players who slice and dice and provide her with very little pace and no rhythm. I still remember her match against Molik back in 2007 - some similarities to this one.

I don't buy into the Neuza "fight" thing at the end. Serena should well have won that match 1&3. Too many UEs crept into her game- which she said herself.

I have to say, I was VERY pleased about Serena's Serving and willingness to S & V, but there is a down side. Serena's serve was the only thing in her game that kept this from being a struggle. She was not as solid off the ground as she needs to be. The scary thing is the potential of just one poor day serving against the wrong opponent (cough, cough Sharapova, Azerenka, cough, cough) and she's ripe for upset IF she continues off the ground like this. I do hope she continues to be willing to come in. That could help mitigate serving woes, should any come.

Live by the Serve..., die by the serve.

She needs to get more solid off the ground.

Does Silva usually play her backhand like that? Always slicing the ball? Because I don't think I saw her play a top-spin backhand in the whole second set.

Yes, she slices it all the time, although I've seen her hit a few top spin ones in passing shots. She used to have a two-handed backhand, but since 2006 that she hits it with one hand, because of her left wrist. Now she's hitting top spin backhands in practice, but she says she's still not confident enough to do it in matches.

Sharapower
Jun 24th, 2009, 09:27 AM
The slice backhand, anyway is quite efficient against the "big babes", if played properly, that is long a low-bouncing. Girls with big two-handed backhands can barely do anything of that kind of ball but push it back.

Interesting... I tend to agree that Serena's becoming more and more serve or nothing lately. The serve is there, now work on those groundstrokes...then you become an even more formidable force.
