She'll need to up her game from now on if she plans on going far in the tournament. Good win though!

An expected result and scoreline from Maria, I guess. We knew she wouldn't breeze through the match (she was 1-4 and 3-5 and, eventually, a setpoint down in the first set), but I think we still knew Maria would fight her way through. Given that it was Maria's first round match (all or most seeded players find the first match the most tricky), the fact that she's still finding her form since the shoulder injury, and that it's Maria's only third Wimbledon match in 2 years, I'll cut her some slack... but she's going to need to improve as the tournament goes on, especially with her service games. However, I'm sure she will. :worship:

On a side note... please stop falling over, Maria!

Kutuzova could've won this match. What a choke. :tape:

If she works on her serve AND Hawk-Eye, like a commentator said, she could do some damages in the future.

Congratulations, Miss Sharapova.

Great job, Maria!! She's soooo tough out there.. She almost leave me with a "wow"-feeling every single time.. Gotta love her!

But wow, Kutozova played extremely well!!! Loved her game..Too bad she had to play Sharapova in the first round..

2 players who can't serve. Vika is really weak when she has to hold.

Actually they were serving pretty well, 6 aces for Sharapova, 65% first serve(I think), they were just returning way better, both of them, nice win for Maria, keep it up.
Good for Kutuzova too.

This was always going to be a tough opening match for Maria, and Kutuzova certainly pushed her all the way today. Not a lot of guile or deft touches out there, but both women produced some thunderous winners (accompanied by some notable shrieking) and it was actually a pretty decent match, quality-wise. Sharapova undoubtedly has to improve but generally I'm happy with her battling performance today. Good job :yeah:

Tought opening round match. Probably a combination of Kutozova playing well and Maria making some mistakes, but she's through to round 2, so good for her. I hope she wasn't hurt when she fell.

Maria's serve is a major liability ATM and she benefited alot from the fact that Vika couldn't hold her own serve either. It'll improve eventually but she needs to hope that her second round opponent can't hold serve either.

this is why the WTA gets frowned upon, you have 5ft 6in and built like a barbie kutuzova playing ball bashing tennis, why oh why? with her size how does she ever expect to outhit a player like maria or any other half decent big girl? its why womens tennis gets labeled braindead now, because shes what similar in height and weight to hingis, can you imagine hingis trying to outhit maria? the WTA gets knocked because all girls no matter what height, weight or technique want to cream winners and its just not going to work for some of them, where as developing slices, great defense, angles ect could push a player like kutuzova above anything she will ever achieve playing like she does.

this shows that players like radwanska and domi although not great power players are smart because they understand how they need to play tennis to be successful.

as for the match, it was 1 strike tennis, with maria being that bit better (as you would expect) at it.

Good win for Maria. :clap2: I had a feeling that this would be a tough match for her, but she did a good job of stepping up when she had to. Obviously this was far from Maria`s best performance, but at this point, a win is a win. Also i was impressed with Viktoriya Kutuzova. She`s a pretty good returner. All she needs to do is improve her serve and she`ll move up in the rankings.

:bs:

Kutuzova plays like this clearly because she's not that athletic and possesses dismal defensive skills, and is not naturally versatile. What she does have is natural timing off the ground and ball striking skills, and the ability to hit out-right winners from the baseline, something which the likes of Cibulkova and Radwanska don't. Players play to their strengths. Vika isn't playing like this for the hell of it. Players are either athletic or they are not, and Vika isn't. Vika was living with Sharapova from the baseline, and at times out-hitting her. Find you're response to be utterly bizzare. Who frowns about womens tennis for players of average height trying to hit winners?

well i totally disagree, she could easily add in a 1 handed slice, some angles and some heavy topspun shots to break up her mindless baseline bashing, and im pretty sure she would be a much better and higher ranked player for it. she doesn't have to stop playing nice strokes just learn when to use them and to asess the opposition. sharapova played a bad match yet was helped out by kutuzova playing the way maria likes, sharapova was never uncomfortable in a battle of baseline bashing. she will never do anything in tennis playing the way she does because there are 100 girls that do it both better and are built to play that type of tennis.

btw you lose all credit when using that stupid BS icon, you may as well join the stupid GIF gang.

Maybe she has been trying to add things to her game but it's just not working. What makes you think that her team hasn't tried to incorporate such things into her game, but she's just not that versatile and her mindless ballbashing is what works best? Sharapova had a positive winner to UE ratio, and her serve held up much better than it has in other matches since her comeback; didn't play that badly.

And no, there are not 100 other girls who have the same quality of ballstriking as Vika. Her game is hugely risky, and that is why she will probably never achieve anything major in tennis, but since her defense is so lackluster she has no choice.

It's like people saying if only Borz a could add kill shots to her game. Same story with Kutuzova and adding certain aspects to her game. Clearly she's not that tactically aware and that's something you're born with. Case in point - Lena D.

i don't bother using capital letters as its a forum, surely you understand a full stop means end of sentence. you obviously fully understand what im writing thus proving that adding in the capital letters is a waste of time on a forum. now if i was writing something that wasn't to be skim read and on a forum i would use them.

you'll also be shocked to find out that certain players really don't ever try to add in new shots. im no kutuzova expert but i would guess her practice sessions consist of bashing balls from the baseline and midcourt, i highly doubt she spends 30 mins a practice just slicing backhands. a sliced backhand, looped forehand and good defense are easily learnt if practiced enough

I HAVE seen 3 times where Vika looked at the umpire Lynne Welsh (sp?) and was indecisive and did not challenge....she would have won all 3 challenges and these were on major points!! it could have been a different outcome if she challenged

the umpire did not do a good job, on break point in set 2 when vika looked at her she sed it was long...but hawk eye showed it was good

i feel bad for vika with those bad calls and the umpire making bad errors

Kutuzova has an amazing strike when she's on. It almost reminded me of Sprem back in '04, where she pretty much hit the most thunderous ball on the tour. There was one backhand the Ukranian hit to go up a double-break that was simply:eek::worship:

Of course, the errors and slightly, dodgy angluar forehand decided the match to an extent. Wasn't able to produce on the very crucial points. Nonetheless, her game is flair unlimited.

Maria's form since her comeback undulates between fierce, attacking tennis, and then more passive passages of play, where her opponent can start taking advantage. However her fighting qualities are still very much in evidence, and that will serve her well for the time being at least. Her serving though is precarious at this stage, so that will have to improve.

I think Michael Joyce is a good coach. It cannot be easy trying to tell someone what to do with three grand slams and
monstrous earnings in endorsements, who will not hesitate to hurl expletives at you during a match---but look
how good a shape Maria is in, after this long layoff (compared, to...uhh..never mind), but he had her out practicing
yesterday specifically on attacking second serves----it probably saved the match for Maria, because it shook up kutuzova, making her think she had to get the first serve in---and when she started thinking that way---her first serve started failing her.

Maybe it was all Maria's idea to practice that----but they seem to have a pretty good rapport.

I was actually really impressed with the hitting from both of them (tho' I did only see the second set, thanks to federer). I thought maria's serve looked good - did she only double fault once in the second set? - and apart from a few rusty overhits, she played solid and very attacking tennis. kudos to kutuzova (no pun intended!), she looked better than most "first round victims".

I was surprised at the stats---I assumed Maria must be serving badly to be broken so many times---but Kutuzova must have been playing one hell of a match.

These serving stats--if Maria can maintain them--could get her into the second week. Because her opponents are going to have a lot of pressure on their own serves.
