View Full Version : What Is It About Your Favourite Player That Attracts You To Them?

Singleniacki
Jun 21st, 2009, 01:48 PM
I'm pretty sure you can guess my fav. I became a fan of Marion during her wimby run in 2007, she became my favorite because of her unorthodox style of play and because of the fact that she never hides behind a mask.

I guess every person sees something different in a player that draws them towards them. Whether that be native country, level of success or something else.

What is it about your favorite player that attracts you to them?

And my third fave:
Because her game is the most beautiful out of the "active" (:hysteric:) players.
Because HER forehand is the best since Steffi
Because of that sexy serve
Because she does the best splits in the known universe
Because she can go from being the tour's worst choker to one of the most mentally tough players in a flick of a switch.
Because she is one of the most charismatic players.
Because of THOSE hips.
Because her, Anna and Serena are BFFs.

Venus - She's like a weird hybrid of Iman and Xena. What's not to like? :D

Wozniacki and Lisicki - Seem really down to earth and seem very cheerful on court. It's nice to see players who are able to crack a smile and look like they're actually enjoying themselves.

Bartoli - So ridiculously unconventional. First you're laughing and then suddenly she's aced you.

Safina - Primarily for her FO 08 run. I'm not a fan of her technique, but I like her fighting spirit.

Zheng - She adds something different to the tour. Lots of personality!

Elena I just relate to. She strives for success in her profession but doesnt quite get there. She has the talent but I think she lacks the self confidence. I was thinking about this when i was high once is that I think generally most people root for players that they identify with. William sister fans are probably similar to them. Maybe you wanna be number 1 in everything you do, maybe you can be a little overconfident and think youre the best. Elena fans may be a little shy and timid or lack in self confidence or maybe just come up short in everything they do. Jelena fans probably have a good sense of humor and enjoy the beauty and fun side of life. Svetlana fans probably dont judge people by looks alone and look deeper into the character of things. Maria and Ana fans may possibly be a little vain and shallow in Rl, Wozniacki fans are probably very cheerful and optimistic, always a smile on your face, and so on and so on.

I've said many times on the board why I love her so much, and all of the above reasons are the basic ones. She was without a doubt the sweetest person I talked to/met in Charleston last year, and that includes the bitch diva 100-something ranked personas no one outside this board cares about, and she's a star. She's very intelligent too, and I think the people who say she has a dumb game overexaggerate. When she's playing a bad match/losing, yeah it looks like she's playing dumb, that's the case for anyone. :weirdo:

She used to be a great fighter, I could watch her hit forehands and double faults all day, the way she reacts to winning when it means something to her hits me hard every time whether it's me smiling/crying/laughing/rolling my eyes, and I probably/definitely wouldn't be as big a fan if she were dominating the sport as much as I'd like her and believe she could win any and every tournament she enters.

I love Jelena because of her on court personality and the fun she brings to the game. I also like how she never says die and will pull out every ridiculous shot like a sliced forehand passing shot while doing a split.

I like Azarenka because of her game, her dedication, and her potential. I also feel like she's a throwback to what the WTA used to be and should be in the future. She's a young, hard working girl who not only plays singles but also takes doubles seriously so that she can improve her all court game.

I first became a fan of Szavay because of her service motion and her pretty white dress :hearts:

I like Radwanska because of her game, poker face, and willingness to stir the pot off-court.

Sharapova because she's an ice queen but will shout, "Allez up your fucking ass!"

Just to name a few.

Maria's my favourite because of her unrelenting will to win, no matter how difficult or awkward the circumstances. Her determination is so admirable and I really appreciate players with the mentality of champions. Obviously I like her game too - flat, sweetly hit groundstrokes are something I love to watch, especially when the player is in good form. It's been interesting watching her adding little touches to various aspects of her game over the last few years; I know she's not exactly the most artistic player with her tennis but she is definitely trying to mix in new things.

I do think Maria has a cute sense of humour too. Yeah, she doesn't show it on court, but some of her comments in press conferences and interviews are amusing and she does charm me :p

I became somewhat a fan of Myskina after she defeated Kournikova at 2001 Leipzig. But the match that made me her true fan was her epic battle against Martina Muller at 2002 Fed Cup.
It was a must-win match (Russia was 2-1 down) and Myskina was fighting and choking, fighting and choking, getting frustrated and suddenly turning into a full attacking mode. After 3+ hours of a gruelling play she finally won 7-6 6-7 11-9. Though Russian team eventually lost thanks to pathetic efforts of Dementieva and Likhovtseva in doubles that was a turning point in Myskina's career.
And of course I always liked fluidity in her game, her seemingly effortless groundstrokes and her on-court tantrums.

Hingis was always my fave since seeing her win the wimbeldon girls, the game was incredible. Now my fave is Hantuchova and I liked her ever since seeing her whip through Indian Wells the first time, but she's my *favourite* because after that nightmare Asagoe match at Wimbledon, being in tears for the last set with the whole match on her racket. After losing that, and this was at the height of all her off-court problems, she comes back on an hour or two later and is laughing and joking in the mixed doubles. Got to love that :hearts:

I love Jelena because she's incredibly unconventional. I love her unique look, her honesty and ability to say anything and everything. "Thai girl" can turn into "Tiger?" at any time, you'll hear about helicoptors, glitter, wanting to eat chocolate - anything else. I love watching her play when she's at her best; she'll get anything back, with some interest on it. She plays fluid, agressive tennis that is very asthetically pleasing with tons of angles. At this point, her serve has become endearing, no matter how shitacular it is. I love how she'll be up 4-1 40-0 on her own serve, and still lose the game. It's become hilarious to an extent. She's down to earth, but at the same time, knows how to be glamorous and have fun without really giving a damn. She does her own thing, and doesn't let the naysayers get her down. She brings a ton of personality to the tour. Not to mention, most of the time, she looks great on court. Her dresses are always great.

Myskina began the season as #59 and improved to #29 by May. Muller was coming off a title run in Budapest and was ranked #65.
It was a Fed Cup debut for Nastya, they played in Germany on clay courts (Nastya's worst and Muller's best surface). It was kinda funny match cos the outcome was never in doubt though Muller tried her best that day. But Myskina was so nervous she kept squandering match points, she needed nine or ten of them to close out the match.

Maria makes 25 million a year or so in endorsement money.

But she was so anxious to get back to playing tennis during her time off from the shoulder surgery, that she would go to extra practice at 11 p.m. some nights. Her dedication to the game is huge.

You can see pictures of her throwing the football around. Or at basketball games. Or reading Michael
Crichton. Or on the cover of a women's fitness magazine. Twice she has been named one of the 10 best dressed women in the world for a week by Vogue magazine.

There is that clip of her cursing "allez", etc. The video
of her making over the Detroit draft choice football player shows her laughing, and shows how comfortable she is with athletes in other sports. She speaks several languages.

Her legs.

Her eyes.

Her whole body displayed in her best tennis outfits. Or in a dress on David Letterman.

Her face is kind of ugly or contorted in some of her pictures, especially when she is playing. But it is a beautiful face, one of the most beautiful in the world.

Her droll sense of humour. Her sense of her own history, from birth to now.

Her intensity on court to win.

I like her more now than when I first noticed her---she just keeps adding things to make me like her.

She is a renaissance woman, with a lot of layers of complexity.

She is interesting.

- Dominating the game at the age of 16... Simply unbelievable
- Her brash, brazen, cocky, bitchy, divalicious behaviour/personality when she was young :hearts:
- Her nonchalance when she wins the most amazing points
- But still her willingness to show her emotions on court - smiling, throwing her racket, yelling!

Maria Sharapova

Venus is very intelligent, witty, and caring. Off the court she says deep things and can be philosophical at times. Then she gets on court and turns into a complete jock. I love the contrast.

Serena is the ever striving little sister, always afraid she'll get left behind. So much of her passion comes from her determination to be someone great too, just like everybody said Venus would be. I love her intensity and how she's not afraid to lay all of her emotions out on the line.

Because she is the nicest player on tour who is just genuinely one of the sweetest people ever to step on the court. I love her defensive game which can so easily turn offensive, I love the lack of drama around her, her kind acts, how she's real, and she's just a person playing tennis. Players like Maria and Serena are divas and celebrities (not that it's a bad thing). But Kim reminds you she's just a player who likes the game and wants to compete, but it's not the only thing in her life. She cares about wanting a family, doing charity, and being happy. And that reality is nice on tour.

Her wonderful attitude, in life and in tennis!
I have never seen such a classy person, not only on the courts but off of them as well :worship: She inspires me daily to be the best person I can be. To be optimistic, to be kind, to be classy. Also, her never-say-die attitude is unparalleled. She's 33 and she's still trying to hang with the teenagers and youngsters, even though she's lost 11 matches in a row she's still hoping to do well and to get far. It inspires me to surpass myself, to do my best in what I do...
She's more than just a favorite player for me - she's my hero, my idol. :hearts: I'll never forget when I saw her the first time in person, when she took a photo with me.. :hearts: Not many people can say they did that with their idol.

Serena..her game, her serve, the attitude...she's provided us with some of the most entertaining rivalries this decade. vs Jen, vs Henin, vs Maria...even vs Venus. If I'm not mistaken she's come from mp down against all of them, save Jen.

The way she makes things personal..who can forget that forehand winner against Maria in the ' 05 oz open SF? Wow!

Lindsay my favourite because of her great ball striking ability on the court and her grace in victory and defeat off it. :)

Robert, why did you edit your post? I thought what you first wrote was a really nice story.

Thanks, but after I wrote it I looked at the question and realized it didn't really answer it, I thought. :p So I got rid of it. Thank you though. :)

Dear God...where to start and more importantly to end......

How bout for now?

Her beautiful one handed BH, and serve and volleying game (when it's on)

Her down to earth attitude and approachability

Her sense of humour

Her smile, and how she smiles with her eyes

Her strength of character to be what she is, to stand up and be counted...

Her amazingly toned athletic body..her legs are ridiculous :)...not to mention those shorts (You know what I'm talking about!!!?)

Oh and some REAL fist pumping

The Momo jump

And the Momo roar..

With the odd "Putain" thrown in...

What's there not to love...??? :hearts:

Even the frustrating lows of matches that should be in the bag slipping away only make the highs even sweeter...

Je t'aime!!

I could go on but I'll only embarrass myself..

Elena Dementieva;
Her on court vulnerability at times.
Her down to earth, sweet personality.
Her forehand.
Her movement.
Her serve :p
The way we Dementieva fans never know what we're going to get.
