View Full Version : Venus Draw - She's the 2 time defending champ, of COURSE her draw looks weak

1r Voegele - Haven't a clue
2r Lesser Bondarenko
3r Makarova, says instinct. Suarez Navarro, say Capital 'A' Art.
4r Stosur. But I want Artificial Intelligence
QF Glatch. There's no good pick
SF _________
FR Serena

Venus being Venus, she could lose any of those matches. And very few players win thee Wimbledons in a row. But, 2nd week, she's seeded to face Ivanovic, Jankovic and Safina. In 2009. On grass.

If Sharapova got that draw, Dawn Marie would be screaming.

You could at least do them all in one thread, no need to spam the entire board with 4 threads, and especially since 2 of the top 4 will most likely never win Wimbledon. :tape:

True, it isn't the toughest draw by a looong shot, but in recent years ('05, '07), Venus has done better at Wimbledon when she's faced tough, quality opponents that have forced her to be prepared and on her game. I was really surprised that she pulled through last year, because for most of the tournament it was more about Venus staying focused and doing what she needed to do, rather than battling through and becoming ominously sharper, thanks to most of the seeds falling so early...:tape:

I would actually have MUCH preferred that Venus met players like Maria and Kuz at some stage - players who could push her to find another level. I would have shrugged at a WS semi but wouldn't have bemoaned it. With the Serbs and Safina however, it is all too unpredictable. If the Serbs continue to slump, she could get past them only to then face an in-form opponent... :help: But then again, they could just as easily face Venus on the other side of the net, take one look... and then suddenly remember that they *do* know how to play tennis after all and find their motivation.

Keep in mind that CSN and Li Na both have positive H2Hs with her - and on her day Li can spell danger for anyone. If I recall correctly, Dokic can play well on grass. Stosur's in good form and with a huge serve of her own and could do some damage if her return game continues to go awry. Jankovic was the last player to beat her on grass. And as you've said, we all know how flaky Venus can be when meeting young upstarts she's never played before. So true, it ain't a death draw but Venus often has a way of complicating (or screwing up) what *appears* to be a stroll in the green. I'm one fan who doesn't think that players benefit from cakewalk draws.

Pretty easy draw, I'd say.

Barring a day where she cannot put the ball in the court, she should go very far.

anyway, the draw Venus gets doesn't much matter at Wimbledon. after five Wimbledon titles, I think she has proven she has the game to beat all comers.

go Venus. take your sixth title!

Venus sucks.Doesn't it just drive you crazy when players you don't lke win prestigious events? :) Over and over and over. It's as if they were rich, accomplished, and respected, while you were an ankle-biting dweeb who's life, let alone tennis acumen, was of no consequence. Oh yeah ....

On the plus side, a 'matt' is something people wipe theit feet on when they walk into the house. Besides me, nobody even has a 'Volcana' IN their house. Feel useful.

What match did the Venus cheating happen in?It didn't happen, that's the point.

It was the Dubais SF. Venus correctly challenged a bad line call. Some Serena fans were upset, because they said that Venus waited too long to challenge.

BUT, Venus always checks the line, asks the umpire first and then decides whether to challenge. AND the umpire allowed the challenge. AND Serena's ball was indeed out. :help::tape:

Which "prestigious events" are you talking about? The only "prestigious event" Venus is able to win these days since the Stone Age is Wimbledon. At all the other Slams and big tournyes off grass she does exactly what I wrote in my first post. :tape: Suck :p

BTW, the answers and good/bad reps I got from my initial post were very interesting and telling. Now I can easily tell which Venus fans have a sense of humour and are able to take a light-hearted comment lightly, and which Venus fans are over-sensitive, cannot endure a negative comment abouttheir fave and are only able to answer with an aggressive insult :wavey:

it's certainly a doable draw, but I wouldn't say it was easy either.

as you say, any of those "slumping players" have the tools to play well and we know Venus can go on walkabouts when it looks like the match is going to be too easy.

What? Dubai, not Wimbledon;)

It was after Dubai that some Serena fans called Venus a cheater, or "Cheatus". It was almost as if Venus wasnt supposed to beat Serena on a hardcourt and when she did it defied Universal law [that Serena should always win and be number 1 in the Williams family]; almost as if the balance had shifted. At least that was the case to some insecure Serena fans, which caused them to dislike Venus, disguising their dislike through this "cheating" nonsense.

It was obvious; had Venus lost, they would still be half heartedly, or "supposedly", cheering her on, but it was the fact that they knew Venus was a major threat to Serena and not just at Wimbledon.

YEC was played in Doha for the first time ever. And for the first time (I think) outdoors. That doesn't make it a "prestigious" event.

What does that have to do with the opponents Venus faced? She defeated the World #1, 2, 3, 5 and 9. Forgetting the fact not many people can claim to have beaten the World's Top 3 players in one event, she had 5 top 10 wins in one week's time. How many people can claim that? And on a surface (outdoor hardcourt) she hadn't won an important title on since 2002.

Jeez. Talk about grasping at straws.

It was a good win for her, no doubt. Even with Ana being ill and Serena inured. But as you have said, it was an anomaly for her. Later in Australia and recently at RG she was back to her usual self (off grass). :)

I have faith in my girl BIG VEE! She's turns into a MONSTER on this court man.even the commentators are saying that the top half is heavier: four Grand Slam champions and the world #1. Serena's quarter is tough with her, Maria, and Azarenka all clustered together. But whoever emerges is likely through to the finals. . .
