View Full Version : ESPN Classic Wimbledon Lineup

Each year, on the eve of the Championships, ESPN Classic shows some classic Wimbledon matches. Most years they mainly focus on really old mens' matches. This year might be one of the first ones where the only have two matches from before 1985.

Here are the matches they'll show this Sunday (June 21st- 10 am E):
1993 Steffi vs. Jana Novotna
1978 Navratilova vs. Chris Evert
1980 Borg vs McEnroe
2000 Sampras vs. Rafter raf
2008 FedTard vs. Rafa "the Ragging Bull" Nadal

Surprised that they still haven't ever included the epic Lindsay Venus match. To be honest I could have come up with a much better lineup. Nonetheless I'll likely watch ESPN classic all day Sunday, just to get myself geeked up for Wimbledon. With Nadal out a lot of my enthusiasm for this years Wimbledon has lessened. All my hopes are riding with Serena to save my Wimbledon.

The Venus vs. Serena 2008 final is on at 430pm on TTC today.

The 2005 final has not been repeated, I don't think. ESPN showed it briefly during a rain delay in 06 but that's it.

I'd love to see it again on a television in its entirety. I am surprised TTC or ESPN do not replay it.

Not really that surprised. It was just long, not great throughout.

Im very surprised they didnt replay that final yet. It may not have been the greatest quality but there was drama throughout. And it was the best three setter final that we've seen at a grandslam in a while for the women. Only the 06 final comes close.

Certainly not. It was modern grasscourt tennis at it's best, some of those rallies were just incredible. Easily the most dramatic, high quality GS singles final of the decade so far, and this is coming from someone who was devastated by it. :bigcry:

Ignore Diesel. Diesel loves to hate on Venus and only cheer on Serena so given the attempt to dismiss the 05 final, how could they resist?

TTC lied. :o 430pm wasn't the 08 Final. They are showing Ashe/Connors instead.

TTC lied. :o 430pm wasn't the 08 Final. They are showing Ashe/Connors instead. They removed that from the promos mid week. I wish I knew why. It was originally supposed to be Thurs night, but then seemed to be moved to today, but I was disappointed that it really wasn't I've wanted that match on record. Would have been nice to have it on HD DVR. *sigh*

Just so all the Williams Sisters fan know, each and every single slam final they've contested is now on youtube. :D

Yeah, I noticed that too.:( Typical sucky ass Tennis Channel. It's not the first time they promised something and then didn't deliver and it won't be the last.:fiery:

It was dramatic in it's length. Best part was the tiebreak after Venus fell down seemingly giving the match over to Lindsay to serve out. That's it.

And this is any different than the typical Venus fan how  I didn't find the Linds/Vee final to be classic - that certainly isn't a crime to you oversensitive Vee fans. As a matter of fact you all did such a wonderful job of ignoring

Yes, I agree that people now only think of it as a "classic" simply because of the score and because of Venus's reaction to winning. I doubt many remember the actual match and if they were to rewatch it, they would be bored up until 5-5 in the third :o Mauresmo/Henin the next year was much better :)

Novotna has a lot of red in her outfit. I am surprised Wimbledon allowed it.

I am loving these crisp volleys from both players. Too bad more women can't volley like this today.

So very true! Both Seffi and and Jana made slight changes to change with the times as well. You have to remember they both played the likes of Venus, Hingis, Serena, Clijsters, and a few others who still play.

If you want to see how far tennis has truly come and want a good compare contrast from yesteryear and today watch the next match- Chris vs. Navratilova....lol

I never understood why the Venus/Davenport epic was so forgotten and not-remembered? It was the best ladies Slam final of the past decade by far. And it was between two great American champions. I surely would have expected more highlight reels from it.

besides they had a rivalry that spanned a decade, having played each other some 23 times with shifts in dominance and a h2h that was ultimately so close. the problem with thei rivalry was that they only competed in three slam finals and had very similar styles.

Roger and Nadal, in contrast, have competed in seven or so in a much shorter period and even though Roger is undeniably GOAT for men, Nadal owned him. And they (like Evert and Martina) both owned their respective preferred surfaces. Linds and Venus were more evenly matched and both under-achieved based on their potential.

still, just rewatched it. Linds had all the momentum, but Venus won on all the critical points.

Or maybe I just don't assume "excellent" tennis based on an 8-6 third set?

How was it not "ecxcellent" tennis??? Please explain. The stats were great High 1st serve % from both and alot more winners then errors from both. Lots of drama (davenport served for the title in the second was broken at love, Venus saved CHAMPIONSHIP point) Not to even mention it was 9-7***in the third. The longest Wimbledon final in hitsory!!

What the hell makes a great match for u :weirdo:
