View Full Version : Most Surprising Results This Year (Thus Far)?

Sep 9th, 2002, 02:21 AM
For me, the things that have most shocked me about what has happened this year on the tour are...

4.) Anna Smashnova having more titles (3, and yes, I know they're rinky-dink titles) than each of the the non-Williams players in the Top 10! (This may and probably will change of course.)

3.) Jennifer Capriati repeating at the Australian Open. I really, really doubted that she'd win. I thought she'd spend the off-season eating donuts and showing the same form as she did at the end of last year when Testud was beating up on her. When she lost to Stevenson at Sydney, I thought she was done.

2.) Serena Williams winning the French Open. This time last year, she was the top player I thought most unlikely to win on clay - slipping and sliding and no patience. She sure changed that in a hurry. I thought nothing could shock me more but then...

1.) Amelie Mauresmo made two straight Slam semifinals - at Wimbledon and the US Open! I remember looking at her Wimbledon draw and thinking that she was going to lose to Myskina or earlier (Serna, I think it was?). I remember, last year, a lot of people on this board thought she was the most likely to fall out of the Top 10. Now, she looks like she can end the year at No.4!

Serena's domination of Venus this year. She flat out and out has made Venus look very average.

Sep 9th, 2002, 02:49 AM
Average in only their head to head meetings, I mean...not all the time. So don't hate.

Sep 9th, 2002, 03:02 AM
Serena tightening up the unforced errors and reigning in her power game to dominate EVERYBODY, including Venus.

Monica beating Venus in the AO quarters.

Pete Sampras winning the US.

Pete and Andrea making the final of the US.

Venus not winning a single slam this year.

For the Aussie players there have been a few surprises

Wheeler def Kournikova at French!

Sarah Stone heading for top 150 in doubles!

Samantha Stosur's pathetic form in singles and dumb scheduling!!

Amanda Grahame qualifying and reaching the semi finals of a WTA event!

Trudi Musgrave set to qualify for a WTA Event!

Mireille Dittmann Direct entry into a WTA Event without a wildcard, not that she's ever had one anyway! And also winning main draw doubles match!

Adriana Szili whitewash in Wellington

Cindy Watson reaching 3rd round of Australian Open

Molik's crash down the rankings from 45 to 95!

Non-Australian upsets

Austria Fed Cup team defeating USA Fed Cup team!!!!!!! (it doesnt get bigger than that!)

Shaughnessy's poor form since Sydney final, especially after sensationally leading Serena before Serena pulled out

Arantxa's thrashing at French Open!

Coetzers horrific slide down the rankings

Schnyder and Majoli's runs at the Tier 1 in USa

Williams Rulez

OMG, yes! Fed Cup! Barbara Schwartz (with the aid of Jennifer Capriati and Billie Jean King) defeating the American team. LOL. I nearly fell off my chair when that happened.

And Patty beating Mauresmo, Pierce, Serena and Capriati to get to that Charleston final. More specifically, the last two games in the Serena match. I had a tape running during that match because I thought Patty had a good chance of winning but midway through the 2nd set I shut if off. I left the tv on while I did other things. I watched again towards the last few games. When Serena had match point I thought it was over. Then Patty just served her way out. I was stunned.

Seeing Dementieva ranked so high in doubles (higher than her singles ranking) also astounds me...especially after watching her play doubles.

Oh, other posts just reminded me:

Majoli breaking her 5 year title drought. Big surprise.

Sep 9th, 2002, 01:07 PM
Patty def Serena and Jenny

Austria def USA

Monica def venus

Chanda winning 2 titles

Sep 9th, 2002, 04:55 PM
Venus not winning a Slam.

Anna Smashnova winning as many titles so far this year as Capriati, Hingis and Davenport COMBINED (even apart from that, her rise into the top 20).

Chanda Rubin coming back so consistent.

Patty Schnyder beating Mauresmo, Serena and Capriati back to back in Charleston.

Justine Henin losing to Aniko Kapros in R1 of Roland Garros.

Sep 9th, 2002, 09:37 PM
Venus not winning a slam

Hingis' poor form (I know she is injured, but I kinda considered her invincible against all the players but the top ones).

Serena's total turn around (I knew she had the potential to be the strongest force in womens tennis, but realizing it is still totally stunning)

ASV's demise

The threats of Hantuchova/Myskina(I love their games).

Monica's high level of competitiveness(I thought that that poor loss at last year's USO would totally discourage her)

Brian Stewart

Virginia/Paola reaching the Wimbledon final... a playing a competitive match against les Williams.

Clijsters/Shaughnessy d. Raymond/Stubbs at the USO.

Jelena Dokic's arms and/or legs haven't fallen off.

Daniela Hantuchova has the longest legs in the history of the WTA, and that someone actually knows this.

The WTA has more African-American coaches than the NFL, despite Americans in total comprising only 7% of the tour.

The performance of Bea Bielik at the USO. And the irony that a tall, hard serving woman has a name that begins with "bee-bee".
Corina Morariu's performance in her singles match vs Serena.

That someone at Nike though the "shower curtain" pattern looked good.

Sep 10th, 2002, 12:40 AM
1. Serena winning at the State Farm tourney -- 1st tourney after her injury and beating Hingis and Capriati to win the title!

2. Venus losing to Sandrine Testud (in Dubai) after she just became the #1 player.

3. Monica beating Venus at the AO Quarters.

4. Anna almost beating Jelena this summer!

5. Clarissa Fernandez making the Semis of the FO.

6. Pete Sampras winning the USO this year!

Sep 14th, 2002, 01:06 AM
1. Pete winning the Open
2. Clarisa Fernandez at RG
3. Jelena Dokic at #4
4. Venus not winning a slam
5. Serena dominating

Sep 14th, 2002, 02:18 AM
1. Pete winning the open. I thought it was another second round loss to the next George Bastl.

(Big Gap)

2. Monica beating Vee at Oz- I think my friends at school thought I was on speed for about a day. I remember sreaming so loudly (in joy of course) in the morning when I got the result, and I was so happy all day long.

3. Amelie Mauresmo- I thought for sure she was done for. She was overrated, mentally unstable, etc. Then she hired a freakin' psycologist, and a new coach, and made me eat crow.

4. The fall of Jennifer Capriati- I really thought Jenny was going to do well this year, and instead, her year kind of ended after stupid Billie the Nazi King kicked her off the Fed Cup Team.

5. The rise of Serena- I already had to deal with one Williams sister, but then Serena decided to keep balls IN the court, so she made me deal with two. (MOMMY!!!!!!! ;) )

6. Jennifer beating Marti at Oz- I was crying and screaming at the tv because I was mad at Jennifer for making so many errors, and then, before my dad could convince me to shut the hell up, I saw my gal holding up the trophy! What a pleasant surprise!

7. Jelena Dokic's all around ignorance- WHO THE HECK PLAYS SUCH A DEMANDING SPORT EVERY WEEK REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL YOU DID THE WEEK BEFORE????????? And she refuses to get a new coach even though her dad does not want to help her anymore. Go figure. I thought she would grow up, but she prooved me wrong.

8. Chanda Rubin/Lindsay playing incredible tennis on their comebacks, and Martina playing like crapola. IT MADE ME SOOOO MAD!!! :fiery:

9. The ATP: Just when I get the pronounciation of one major tournament winner, the dang tour comes up with a new name for me to try to maneuver my mouth into saying.

10. Dani winning Indian Wells- I knew the girl had talent, and I even expected her to get to the finals when I looked at the draw, but I thought Martina would blow the poor Slovakian off the court. Instead, Dani made Martina look like a backboard.
