View Full Version : What would you do if you won BIG in the Lottery

renstar

Here in Australia we have a record $50 million lotto going off next week, and in America recently a guy won $300 million odd on powerball.

What would you do if you won? how would you spend the money? would you still work? would you change?

I would immediately quit my job, nice mansion right on the beach, new beemer and ferrari... plus help out some charities and some family, and lots of travel around the world.... seeing all the Grand Slams of course!:bounce:

No major changes; I'd keep my job and do the same fun stuff I do now...

...just the quality would go up a notch; first class instead of "travelocity", etc...

I'd retire as soon as I could meet my obligations to my clients, then I would ask my spouse to leave his job so we could move to another city (or country). I would travel a lot, and I would use my money to support causes about which I care deeply.

I would probably buy a nice condo in Manhattan, then give some money to relatives. I would also travel the world and see places I wanted to, but never have. I would save a lot of my money to last me a long time and I would probably donate some towards charity or research sometime down the road.

I'd take 10% of it and party like it's 1999 for the first year, and then bank the rest and live well within my means, travel, and work out at the gym.

Well, no more Forever New/Cue/David Jones for me. It's gonna be high end designers only.
I'll pay off my car and apartment.
Buy a penthouse in New York, a mansion in Melbourne, a vineyard in Italy.
When I travel it'll only be first class! And only 5 star hotels. (7 starts if it's the Burj).
I would buy every book I've ever wanted to buy.
I'll give a huge sum to the animal shelter.

OMG I'd do so much!

i'll put up my own production company.
i'll buy a new NY apartment, an English estate, a Southern France vineyard.
I'll buy some cars.
i'll buy designer clothes (but i will still use my discount privileges).
do some more shopping.
do some travelling.
give some money to my family.
buy some awesome art pieces.
finish university.
donate to charities and institutions that i support.

i seriously would give most of it to charity (like, 95%). i wouldn´t be able to live with myself having so much money and not using it to benefit others (aren´t i kind?).

that would leave me with a couple million i suspect (cba to do maths), to go on a long holiday in new zealand or something and buy my parents a great house wherever they want.

how adventurous am i. :tape:

I'd buy Wimbledon and force the comittee to make some changes : Tammy would get a perpetual bye to the QF, Akgul would be seeded #1, Maria wouldn't be allowed to play here anymore (she can still play in Brimingham anyway)
I'd buy Amelie a FO trophy :woohoo:
I'd buy Navratilova's ex-girlfriend and lock her in a room without window. As a punishment for her silliness she would be forced to watch Chaky vs Kuzzy USO SF on repeat until the end of her life
I'd put Dawn Marie in a good clinic with better doctors.Who knows, it could work ?(but I'd still allow her to surf on internet one hour a day )

Still have to think what I'd do with all the money left...

No, it is not a stupid thing to say. Winning the lottery for some people can be a curse. It can be very scary. Have you ever read or seen documentaries on some lottery winners who can't handle their new found riches and become self-destruct?

There have been many sad stories written and documented about those people. Not everyone can keep their heads screwed on right when all of a sudden they become multi-millionaires. First of all, they have lots and lots of pressures from all their family members and complete strangers constantly begging them for money. Second of all, if for example a lottery winner was a borderline alcoholic, drug addict or had a gambling problem, guess what? That person's bad habits and other problems are only going to be exacerbated and getting worse, because now they have all the money in the world to buy whatever they want and any amount. They spend and spend lavishly thinking that the money is never going to end. And then before they know it, they are broke in a few months or a few years. Some of them become mental and even died prematurely.

Read some of these stories: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=lottery+winners+who+are+broke&aq=0&oq=lottery+winners+who+are&aqi=g1

Quit my job
Move to a nicer place, like New Zealand, or Antigua y Barbuda. A great house with Solar Energy.
Buy some appartments, taxis, drugstores, to make some of my money to work for me.

According to the ammount, I would love to create a Formula One Team :D
If not, build a WTA Tournament in some beautiful place at my country, for example at El Calafate (the city of the glaciers) or Ushuaia (the most shouthern city of the world).

___

In the other hand I would like to "build a city". Find a lonely place, talk to the goverment, and bring many unemployed people who live in the streets, eat from the garbage, homeless, working children in school age, etc, and start a new city with them. Also, many teachers, doctors, architects, many of them have trouble to find a job when they finish university, so come with me!

Then we start building the city, my homeless start building the houses, the streets, the hospital. At the beggining we all eat in a big warehouse, the women can cook. Later each one can eat at home.
By night, all of them should attend school, to learn not only school stuff, but music, recient history, chess, computers, internet, english.
A nice sports palace with soccer, tennis, female hockey, and so. We can discover many stars between these kids.
A good retirement house for old people, where they have good nurses, doctors, cats, sun, trees, chess tournaments, books... anything to spend their final years with joy and confortable.

After the basic wood houses we can now build better houses, appartments, at the same time we start building industries, like clothes factories, some other factory that uses any raw material that grows/lays close to the city, and then we can see money coming back.

So we can call more homeless and integrate them to the city while we open new job sources. Mandatory school for children and adults, many sport and cultural (dance, painting, writting, singing, etc) contests, to discover hidden artists and sport stars that were destined to die in the streets or in a shooting during a robbing.

My new city will need supplies, food, oil, bricks, but as money will start coming and going, my people will pay their taxes, sell their manufactured stuff, their services, their sport habilites, their music, poems... in one world, all these people who was "outside the society" will be inside it, they will earn they own money and live their own lifes.

____

You can say I have played "Civilization" , "Colonization" , "Pharao" so many times  and it is true!

You dont need a lottery winner to do that in Latin America or Africa, you just need a goverment that cares and wants to do it.
Im thinking to write a book with this plot, perhaps a novel, but Im writing (trying to) other stuff right now. Just let me play Civilization III and dream its true.-

With myself out of the way, I would buy my Mother a face-lift (only because she wants one, she looks great for her age anyway), a house nearer to the waterfront and my Father a bigger boat. Buy a safe and hire a lawyer before I even claim the money
Quit my job
Take accounting courses so I'd know best how to manage the money
Make sure my mom was going to be well taken care of for the rest of her life
Send some cousins to college
Create a music/arts scholarship fund for the high school I graduated from
Buy a B&W stereo system
Allow myself to take week-long+ go-away vacations
Work at something that I find fulfilling like volunteering at a hospital, helping out local charities, rescuing/training service dogs, etc.

FWIW, I agree with the people who say that having too much money so suddenly can be a curse. I've had relatives who were kidnapped for money (and they weren't even THAT rich) so it doesn't take much for me to imagine what would happen if anyone I was related to suddenly came into a huge sum of money. Then you have those that are reckless with money to begin with and I think it has more to do with false expectations and a failure to understand how math really works.
