Second straight qualification for a Slam MD. :worship:

Only game Kustova won was a break of Sevastova's serve after taking a lengthy injury timeout after getting blitzed in the first set.

Well done Anastasija. :yeah: From what I remember in her match against Masha in Warsaw, Darya has a solid backhand and a well-placed serve...was she outplayed off the ground, faced a bad matchup, or had a bad day?

Saw most of the match. Best performance of the day for me. After two points played the winner of the match was never in douubt. Sevastova was so composed out there and really executed her game plan well. Really nice serving (especially if you take in account that she is not the tallest) and quite a bit of variety (+ a pretty powerful and accurate forehand). From all the young players I saw the last few days she is the one I worry the least about. I don't know is she will ever reach the Top20 but she will definitely have a good career.

Agree with everything but the variety comment. She has no plan B whatsoever. In fact, I predict her to struggle to go any higher than top 50 as big better girls will handle her power with ease and she has nothing else in her game. Heck, she struggled against Sheepers in the first round of qualies who just mixed up her shots and Sevastove had not much for a set and a half to counter it. She is also completely terriefied of her coach or she looks like she might be. In the first match she was almost crying and looked like she'd be killed if she loses that match.

I have heard some things about her coach from RG that don't please me, but I'm sure as she gets a bit older she will make the wise choice and kick him to the curb. I don't know enough about their relationship to go any farther than that, but something needs to be done.

I somewhat agree about her having no Plan B. However, she's not your conventional ballbasher. When she played against Henke in Charleston, she was using a lot of moonballs to set herself up for a short ball. Her volleys are also very sound (not that she uses them that often, but they are there if she needs them) and I think she can develop into an all-court player one day.

I really don't have many expectations for Nastja, I just look forward to seeing her game again because she is a pleasure to watch. I'm not sure if she has the ability needed to make the Top30, Top20 players in the world but she has a lot of natural ballstriking ability, that much is for sure.

Thanks to both tiptop and tenn_ace for your mini-reports. I have a question for tenn_ace:

In Charleston, I noticed a lot in qualifying that her second serve was very good, with a lot of kick and great placement. However, once she got into the main draw she started pushing her serve a bit and created some double faults and easy return opportunities for both Domachowska and Bartoli. How was her second serve? I know she can get a lot of pop on her first serve for such a small girl, but since she normally has a relatively low percentage, her second serve is key.

After what I saw during her match againast Radwanska in Paris, she really impress me. However, I don't see her in TOP50

iPatty, I saw most of her match against Sheepers and she didn't go to the net once although she had tons of opportunities to do so - Sheepers was practically inviting her.

As for her serve, this pretty much happened in her match against Sheepers. In the first set Anastasia served awesome stuff and gave no chance to Channelle, but then in the second set it was gone somewhere to the point that Sheepers hit a few return winners off Sevastova's serve. Now that I'm thikning more about it, her whole game became very defensive in that second set. I think she got very confused by Sheepers mixing up much more and going more for her shots.

Interesting comments about her coach. I only saw today's match (and missed the first two games of the second set) and I immediately left after the match. i didn't even see him during the match. However, when I was standing next to the other courts later on Sevastova and her coach passed by. Though they seemed to be having a normal conversation at this point this guy gave me the chills. It was just a gut feeling and I forgot about it later on. Interesting though that other people have had a strange feeling about their relationship as well. But as ipatty said she will probably fire him at some point.

About the variety. I certainly overreacted a bit. I have probably seen too much pure ballbashing over the last few days, so I'm just happy if someone comes in once or twice a match or uses a shorter ball to their advantage. ;) The serve is good though, not the hardest but well placed. I think she actually hit quite a few aces today.

I think it's a case of her just getting tight and letting it affect her game. As with the rest of her game, I think that an improvement in this area will come with maturity.

dawid, she played Cornet in Paris, if you are thinking of the right person. :)
