5) 2003 Australian - S. Williams d. V. Williams 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4

I'd say Serena's beatdown of Sharapova at AO 2007 needs to be in that top 5

Best
1) Venus/Davenport - Wimbledon 2005
2) Mauresmo/Henin - Wimbledon 2006
3) Capriati/Clijsters - French Open 2001
4) Serena/Sharapova - Australian Open 2007**
5) Capriati/Hingis - Australian Open 2002

Worst
1) Myskina/Dementieva - French Open 2004
2) Henin/Pierce - French Open 2005
3) Mauresmo/Henin - Australian Open 2006
4) Henin/Kuznetsova - US Open 2007
5) Henin/Ivanovic - French Open 2007

** Controversial decision, I know. I am more of a fan of Maria than Serena, but it wasn’t the result or score line that made the match one of the best - it was simply Serena’s sublime tennis, the single best performance by any female tennis player I have ever witnessed. The tension between the two as well as Serena’s comeback story all added to the entertainment.

Well, that's why it's a question. You can make your own list.

I'm not sure why you need 3 sets to be great? do you mean great in a dramatic sense? The best finals i have ever seen was 2008 wimbeldon. I forgot that it was women playing, trulying the highest level of power and skill i have seen 2 female players display in any tennis match.

Are you kidding me?
That final was...not great. It foreshadowed the WTA until now, that even the WS in a final together does not equal great tennis.
Compare it to the 2003 Final, where both players actually beat some players of note to reach the final, and played a decent one.

2005 Wimbledon Though. Yes Please.

Not great tennis? what is your criteria? pretty much every commentator from john mcenroe to mary carrillo, to writers like peter king and bodo, from sports illustrated, epsn, the guardian uk, the london times, all agree that the match was the pinicle of power, speed and skill ever displayed by two women in a tennis match. So once again i have to asked what is your criteria for determining great tennis?

First, it sounds like you're saying its the best womens match of all time..which it isn't.
As for my criteria, you had to look at the way Serena was playing. She could've won a set, and taken it to 3, but she didn't. And she didn't play stellar tennis to get to the Final, and in the end that showed.
I'm not saying it was bad tennis, but it wasn't great

PS. I have to take issue with some of your references. First, Bodo? Hater of Women's tennis Bodo?
And Carillo? The woman who has problems keeping any consistency in her commentary?

I'd just like to clarify again. I watched the final, I enjoyed it, and was ecstatic that Venus won. But even last year I found the US Open Final much better, much closer, and much more competitive.
After Venus won the first set, I didn't doubt she would lose the match

by your critera hagler vs. hearns considered one of the great fights in history, is not because, it only went 3 rounds and one guy got knockout. I would say your critera is more about dramatic and competitive finals and this is certainly fine. I however would prefer a criteria based upon the quality and level of skill displayed by both players, and for that reason i do think it's best womens match yet played.

But that's what i'm saying. That the match wasn't of the highest quality and skill. Serena could have won a set, and she was certainly capable of winning the first one. She knew she had a great chance at another Wimbledon (and to be honest, I thought Serena would have won, even as a Venus fan) but she just didn't in the end.

In terms of quality, the Venus set point choke job aside, I thought their USO QF later that year had higher quality.

And yes, I do like the drama and the competition.

PS+ We are severely digressing from the topic and would love to continue this through PMs

For me, going three sets is a huge contributing factor in judging a match to be one of the best. A two set match can only be so compelling - as the result is never in serious doubt. As for the 2008 Wimbledon final, I would put it in the top half of women's finals this decade, but I wasn't necessarily blown away by it.

1. Venus Williams def Lindsay Davenport 4-6 7-6 9-7. Wimby 2005. By far the best final at Wimby i've ever seen on the women's side.

2. Jennifer Capriati def Martina Hingis 4-6 7-6 6-2. Australian Open 2002. Jen proved her worth on a whole new level.

3. Amelie Mauresmo def Justine Henin 2-6 6-3 6-4. Wimbledon 2006. Superb all-court tennis from both. Mauresmo after the first set, playing the match of her life.

4. Serena Williams def Venus Williams 7-6 3-6 6-4. Australian Open 2003. Such drama and tension mixed in with some scary tennis:worship:

5. Serena Williams def Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-2. Australian Open 2007. Just a SEAMLESS performance. One of the best performances i've ever seen on a tennis court actually.

2. Amelie Mauresmo def Justine Henin 6-1 2-0 rt. Australian Open 2006. The flattest atmosphere i've seen in a GS. That was before the retirement too.

3. Anastasia Myskina def Elena Dementieva 6-1 6-2. French Open 2004. :o:help:

4. Justine Henin def Mary Pierce 6-1 6-1. Fremch Open 2005. The nadir of Mary Pierce's career happened in one match:sad:

what does who you beat prior to a final have to do with the quality of the final itself?

Do you think their match in Miami was better because it went to 3 sets? Or Dubai because they beat 'players of note'?
Seems rather superficial reasoning.

What? It wasn't the same at all. I don't know how you can compare the two.

Serena's AO '07 was possibly the most aggressive and dominating performance ever. Maria was irrelevant in that match.
Amelie was also dominating but in a completely different manner. She wasn't hitting blistering winners past Justine from the get-go. She was dragging her all over the court with her heavy shots and Justine simply wasn't able to keep up with her being in such condition. There were lots of rallies, she just wasn't winning any.
I believe Justine would have stayed on court had Amelie been playing like Serena. That would have been like a quick and painless death compared to a long lasting torture with no chance of survival.

1. Justine Henin def Kim Cijsters 6-0 6-4. RG 2003. Still after all these years, the worst Slam final i've EVER watched. If you wanted a description of the word 'wretched', just check out Kim's performance that day:o

The nadir of Mary Pierce's career happened in one match:sad:

i agree with all your picks bar the 2003 oz open id swap with the 2008 us open. the 2003 oz open although had some drama the tennis was a mess most of the time. i remember venus hitting her FIRST forehand winner in the 12TH game of the match. can you imagine venus going 11 games without hitting a forehand winner?

Back in the day, that was very possible:lol:

She hit a ton of backhand winners before that 12th game;)

Serena only hit 2 Backhand winners in two sets as well, but hit a ton of FH winners. I just thought the athleticsm on show was the added great tennis element too. There was one passing shot by Serena in the third set that was just:worship:

What do you think are the Top 5 Best and Top 5 Worst slam finals from 2000-2009? For me it's:

Best:
1) 2005 Wimbledon - V. Williams d. Davenport 4-6 7-6(4) 9-7
2) 2001 French - Capriati d. Clijsters 1-6 6-4 12-10
3) 2006 Wimbledon - Mauresmo d. Henin 2-6 6-3 6-4
4) 2004 Australian - Henin d. Clijsters 6-3 4-6 6-3
5) 2003 Australian - S. Williams d. V. Williams 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4

I don't remember any of those finals being particularly thrilling apart from Venus vs Davenport 2005.

Capriati vs Hingis 2002, and even in 2001, because although Capriati swiftly defeated Hingis in that final, it was a great performance and an incredible story. We'd all written her off. Capriati vs Clijsters in 2001 was okay, but it was more length than quality. To me, Clijsters never really looked like she believed she could win it, so it wasn't a thriller. Mauresmo against Henin at Wimbledon 2006 was a better-than-average match, although Justine was a trifle flat.

Basically, most slam finals in women's tennis have sucked this decade. Too many to choose from.

1. V.Williams def. Davenport 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 9-7 2005 Wimbledon
Quite simply a thrilling match, best of the century
2. Mauresmo def. Henin 2-6 6-3 6-4 2006 Wimbledon
A match where it wasn't all baseline-bashing and Amelie finally "won" a Slam
3. Sharapova def. S.Williams 6-1 6-4 2004 Wimbledon
For Sharapova to come out in her first Slam final and win it so convincingly shocked pretty much everyone
4. Capriati def. Clijsters 1-6 6-4 12-10 2001 French Open
The one that got away from Kim... Very tense match, hasn't been a good FO final since
5. Cljisters def. Pierce 6-3 6-1 2005 US Open
Finally Kim won her Slam, took her long enough

Worst
1. Myskina def. Dementieva 6-1 6-2 2004 French Open
Nastya played some good "get the ball back in court and wait for the error" tennis
2. Henin def. Pierce 6-1 6-1 2005 French Open
Justine just took Pierce to pieces, not that Mary's poor play helped with that
3. Henin def. Ivanovic 6-1 6-2 2006 French Open
See French Open 2005 ;)
4. S.Williams def. Davenport 2-6 6-3 6-0 2005 Australian Open
That netcord that just sprung up should have been an easy putaway, Lindsay missed the backhand by a mile and then couldn't do a thing
5. Mauresmo def. Henin 6-1 2-0 rtd 2006 Australian Open
Amelie played well, shame Justine had to retire

I would definitely add the US Open final 2008 between Serena and Jelena. Too bad that match wasn't a three-setter.
As a matter of fact, match-ups between JJ and the Williams sisters were the best ones in terms of quality and drama in 2008.
Of course, some might say I am just a huge JJ fan!

I agree, quality-wise, this was one of the best finals of the decade, which is sad in a way.
This decade has been so poor in providing great finals. The only good quality AND thrilling GS final has been Venus/Davenport at Wimbledon. It's pathetic compared to the '80s or the '90s...I miss the intensity of Nav/Evert, Graf/Nav, Graf/Sanchez, Graf/Seles in GS finals.

Best?
Venus vs. Lindsay.

Stats can't tell the entire story of a match, but I'm always intrigued when people hail the error-fest of the 2008 USO QF as a great WS match, and claim that the Wimbledon final of that same year was a dull error-laden match. 62 winners combined and 11 and 13 UFEs apiece across two sets can be called many things, but 'error-strewn'? I thought it was quite a display of extremely clean, technically sound power-hitting from both sisters, and a master class in serving though it was a shame that their intensity levels didn't coincide.

However, there have been just too many matches to choose from when it comes to the worst. There have been mediocre all-Williams affairs, dishwater dull all-Belgian finals, simply dreadful all-Russian finals (Kuz may be my favourite Russian but, sad to say, I have yet to see her in a decent finals) while, thus far, anything featuring Safina on the other side of the net has been less than scintillating. That said, I'm not surprised that Justine's infamous retirement against Amelie has become a standard feature on most people's lists.

Amelie's was just as aggressive and just as dominating. She was making Henin (one of the most articulated all-court players of the past fifteen years) look absolutely incompetent. Henin's physical state is 100% irrelevant. Sharapova doesn't get a pass for having an off day; Mauresmo just exploited Henin's weakness. Sometimes, Serena's footwork is sloppy and makes sense to make her run around the court even when she hits huge running winners. Sometimes, Henin had such violent intestinal distress that making her run expelled foul matter from her bowels either up or down (we'll never know which ;) ). That doesn't mean Amelie loses any credit for making her opponent look like an ass on Margaret Court Arena.
