Serena after Venus and Safina 4th? Maria has started well on her comeback but is she really ready for 3rd favorite? I don't really like these at all.

:bs: Venus really should be before Serena...but Maria third??? Umm no.

These reflect the money being placed by the general public, all they know is Serena is a top player, Venus is a top player, Maria is a top player, they're not gonna know that Maria lost to Na Li last week.

I see that Vaidisova has finally stopped appearing as one of the favourites, she was in the top 6/7 for every Slam up until recently :help:

Does it not cost people money if they are wrong? If Maria is so unready, won't those enthusiastic enough to bet on her pay dearly?

Should that not cause some satisfaction among those less enthused about her prospects?

i think maria should be third - she did better than the only other 1-wimbledon trophy winner at roland garros and obviously she isn't better than the multi-wimbledon trophy winners.

and you have to remember that these prices aren't just bookmaker handicapping - prices change according to punter speculation.

Maria is still kind of a wild card. She made the FO quarters.
If she gets far she's shown she can win this major.
They don't expect Sveta to win back to back majors.
Dementieva, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Zvonareva are not in good form.
Dinara might go further than people expect, but she probably won't win her 1st major here.
I think these odds are okay. They will be different at the USO and definately at future FO's

Hey the odds makers can pick who they want it doesn't really matter. They had Maria as one of the favorites last year, and we all know how that turned out. They also had Venus as a 100-1 shot after she struggled to get past Morigami in 07. DAMN, I still wish I lived in the U.K that day, because I could have made a SH*T load of money betting on Venus.:tape:

since when? odds are given out before people bet..... it decides how much return they will get....

anyways.... :spit: Venus 2nd? These people DO know Venus has 5 titles and Serena hasnt won since 2003.... I dont agree with these at all...cept Maria at 3 is good IMO
Mine would be
1. Venus
2. Serena
3. Maria
4. Azarenka
5. Kuzzie
6. Safina (only cause shes ranked #1 even though i expect an early loss)

Ana, Jelena should not be considered...

since forever. The bookmakers make money on each bet place, what they want is to have equal amounts of money placed on each player, thats how they make money.
The odds are an attempt to swing money in one particular direction so as to create even betting, thus ensuring in the end the bookmaker makes a profit. I remember one year when the 49ers were a 44pt favotite against the bengals and it had no affect, vegas was sweating bullets that day, thier loss would have been huge, 49er's almost covered the spread also.

yeah I think based on the surface its completely justifiable.

1) Venus Williams (aka federer of grass)
2) Serena Williams
3) Maria Sharapova
4) Kuzzie
5) everyone else as wta is pretty much unpredictable now a days even on the green stuff;)

i don't think he meant it that way, more like close to a mortal lock to make the finals.

odds are not about actual chance of winning, but a snapshot of what the general public (bettors) think. the odd makers do alot research before posting the odds. it is essentially who the public thinks are the favorite. The vast majority of betters probally only the see the hnumber 1 ranking and the fact she made the french. the betting public has short memories. As i can't think why they would think serena has a better chance than venus.

I guess you could see it that way but maybe not so much Hewitt, he kind of fluked it.

At first sight, Maria 3rd favorite sounds retarded, in the sense that I can't see Maria have the endurance to win 7 matches in a row so early after her comeback; however when I think about it, besides the Williams sisters, in the current state of the field I wouldn't bet more money on any other player than on Maria to win Wimbledon.
Makes sense.

NO. Venus Williams is Michael Jordan on grass. And she is going for the Three peat just like MJ did.
