Congratulations Razzano, played very well and an exceptional first set.
Disgusting tiebreak from Elena. The commentators have noticed how she isn't able to convert/pull out third sets anymore, and that is very very worrying. Elena was so good at those key points, and made her the player she was last year. Something has to be fixed. Let's see what happens at Wimbledon. Anything could with Elena.

Razzano had SUCK good tactics in the third!

Would work so well against Caro, Jelena, Elena and so many other GOOD players! Wish she kept this up!!!!!

But whatever, grinded out the win, and the first set would have given her confidence - knowing she had options. Goood win :yeah:

To be honest her best days are behind her IMO. She had some tough loses this year, especially the Mauresmo ones. I watched her matches in Stuttgart and it felt ok, I mean she seemed to enjoy herself, smiling shrieking after dumb errors. Everything changed in Madrid vs Mauresmo, she played really good for a 1 1/2 set and then everything (totally everything) went against her and in the 3rd she was the shadow. It was the first time I saw Dementieva out mentally (she reminded me of Dokic in her 2003 slump). Sad and not interested at all.
Dementieva's weird slump continues, and if she'll still be a mess on US hardcourts then I guess with time her ranking will keep on dropping and probably 2010 will be the last season we could see her play. Hopefully she'll prove me wrong.

PS. I have a bad feeling that she'll be remeberd for being the best Russian underachiever  (unless Dinara fails to win a GS in next finals) with "the serve" but with Gold and Silver medal.

PS.2. Sad to think she used to be 3set Queen as well as 3rd set Tiebreak Queen

PS.3. Congrazt Virginie!

Every time I see her on Eurosport one of the commentators will call her the best player out there not to win a slam, I don't think it'll be limited to Russian underachievers if she finishes her career without one.

Since Dubai 08 til QF in the US Open 08 Dementieva played superb tennis . Since then her level has been par at best, subpar most of times

Razzanno was actually craving some kind of strategy in the first set, trying to bring Dementieva forward with drop-shots and then passing her. However as soon as she began to tighten up she just put all her faith into her precarious ball-striking. Good on her that she was able to pull out a really tight match. More often than not, her game just isn't sustainable over 3 sets.

Dementieva looked lethargic, serve was off, forehand was so indifferent. Played okayish to get back into the match, but her '08 form shows no sign of reappearing any time soon. The fact that she was for the most part being out-hit by Razzanno from the baseline speaks volumes.

i don't know if her best days are over but i'd say that the issue was the paris loss to maresmo - she went awol after the match and her mum couldn't find her. madrid was just the dust in the nose of the camel that fell to the ground with a broken back.

It was pretty cold especially in the first set. As soon as the sun came out Elena played much better. In practise Elena was hitting really deep returns but in the game she was not going for her shots at all. Personally I blame those seagulls because they never interfered with Razzano only Elena on serve about three times.
