Well fought Maria, maybe she was a bit stressed at the beginning of the match (and impressed by the centre court),that's why she played so bad till 3-0 but the end was really positive. She showed a great spirit and great fight.I'd have loved to see that if Maria had played well since the beginning...

Good luck Caro.

Too little too late. Woke up too late Maria.

Love, love, love the fight though. The angry looks, and the "C'mons" were :hearts:.

:awww:

Well, at least the 2nd set looked like a tennis match.

It was nice to see her put up a fight after that horrible and nervous start. :) We could hardly expect her to win in the end anyway.

Good fighting towards the end Kiri  Of course, 80% of GM are having a field day right about now but who cares? You know you've made it when you have haters. Lots of positives to take away from this, however. Her body language was spot on and she never once looked beaten. This is what has been missing from her game for a long time now, the fighting spirit. Perhaps it was a big ask to bring it all together today against Wozniaki when it's been absent all year.

Hopefully her confidence will slowly begin to come back and she'll have that extra pop on her shots again and will feel as though she can flatten them out more. Still, nice fight Kiri

Yeah, it was great to see her fighting. And we could see that her game is still there, she just needs confidence and belief which is what is lacking. :tears:

Is she really working with Sven and the adidas team? I think if so, we can expect at least a decent summer ahead.

It was always going to be a tall order against Caro. At least Maria fought well despite the scoreline and she got to experience Centre Court! :D

I hope she and Igor win the mixed title! :)

That's why i never go there, i only come here cos it would piss me off otherwise:lol:.

This second set was interesting, i hope it will help Maria to stay positive and make her believe that she's still a very good player just lacking of confidence (and a bit of power). If she kept working with Sven,it would be a great idea but with Maria, we never know what to expect.

Masha and Igor are supposed to play their mixed doubles tomorrow but Igor is scheduled on 4th match in the court 18...

I like Kirilenko and all but hopefully this mixed doubles thing does not screw Igor over. As of right now no court/time has been announced for their match and hopefully they (Wimbledon Committee or WTF they are called) don't try to throw them out somewhere forcing Igor to be put in a bad situation. I know the Chak also has a doubles match on first at one of the outer courts. Also quick thought about Kirilenkos match that I just watched all the way through on Archive... maybe it was my audio system but every time Kirilenko hit the ball it sounded like here strings were breaking. Maybe it was the shock absorber combined with lower string tension but the sound the ball was making off her racket was weird... that or she needed to lower her tension... NO POWER. The ball was short and with heavy topsin. You may be able to get away with that on some surfaces against some opponents but against the Woz on grass... not a winning formula. She needed to follow that out wide slice serve in more which could have made her life a little easier. And what was up with that two handed chop slice... (A bit like the Magician) I don't remeber that shot but then again I have not seen a Kirilenko match since last season. But all in all a good positive effort especially after that first set.

Sigh, well I'm sure Igor is fit enough to handle it. Maria has always lacked power, it's a technique thing, she tends to try to muscle it on the fh (and she really doesn't have the muscles to do that). She has to relax her arm and let it whip through more, needs to let the racquet build up momentum. I think hitting the ball further from her body and further in front would be better, although changing the contact point can be difficult for many players. Her bh is a bit better I think.

Yes, Maria's shots tend to land short with spin. It's why she normally likes clay much more than grass. But she did hit a few harder shots in this match, but that made her miss too much. Actually for the last few games Maria was attacking more than Caro, which was why she was doing so much better. However you could see that she wasn't used to hitting so hard, so she made errors. But I think that's a good sign.

Maria has always had that two handed chop, I have never liked it, it's something many girls, Anna C for instance, seem to have copied from Anna K or maybe they acquired it on their own because it's easier to learn than the one handed slice, either way it is never as good as a real one-handed slice so most 2 handers like Kiri should just topspin it most of the time. Either that or improve the slice, seriously Maria's slice often floats and sits up. Fabrice's slice is different, it is basically a left handed one handed slice that just begins with two hands. He also gets a lot more spin and better control, better depth.

If Maria had gotten to 1-2 in the second set (and she nearly did) it could have been very different. Also I think if she had gotten to, say, 30-30 on Caro's serve at 4-4 Caro might have started to feel the pressure. Frankly I think Caro was beginning to tighten.

Anyway, there were some good signs.

I had to get away after the match yesterday. At least the fightback gave the fans a little bit to cheer.

I'm no expert, but it did seem to take Maria time to get used to the court. She didn't look like a player comfortable on grass. If she is prepared to listen to someone then there is no reason why she can't get back into the top 20. I'm just worried that she is too stubborn to change. Finally, she is never going to over-power people but if she can serve 106mph aces out wide, that's not too bad.

imo it would make much more sense to put igor and maria's match last on a court or at the very least put igor's single match first thing on a court so there's a definite starting time for the mixed dubs match :(

I watched this match on livefeed. Maria looked impressive and carried the team as Igor seemed to have a lot of problems putting away volleys. Also, Maria had surprisingly had little trouble holding her serve as she served very well. Her fist bump with Igor between points is adorable. Overall, it was a good win, but Igor's limitations as a doubles players will ultimately let down the team.

True he seemed to get a bit lost yesterday trying to take too many volleys.. but then last year his serve is was what got them to the SF. So if he can keep serving down the bombs maybe they'll be able to work there way through the draw again. :p I like this team a lot they are adorable but if Maria were to play doubles with a more experienced doubles player she could def win a GS, she can really hold her own against the men many times hitting return winners. And she has fantastic volleys

Igor's volley are not really good but with his serve and forehand, they can do very well, i don't even think that Igor needs to go to the net...Igor's forehand is:drool:

And btw Igor isn't a bad doubles' player, he won some really important matches in Davis Cup.But yeah, he's scared to go to the net (and i'm scared when he tries to go:lol:)

I couldn't see that one but i'm happy for them, they seem to enjoy playing together and to like this tournament. I'm also so happy for Igor in singles, he's definitely not a clay court player anymore:D

Mixed doubles is undoubtedly the very best part of the game of pro tennis. Back in the 60s it was very popular and often shown on USA tv. Sadly, nowadays it is never shown.

It appeared to me that Kirilenko dominated the match. You wouldn't expect that in mixed. But the true beauty of tennis is where skill can dominate power. Today, the men's game is all power. Skillful play is overwhelmed by power play and it shouldn't be. But the women's game largely remains one where skill beats power. Yesterday, it appeared that the men players made more unforced errors when they attempted to return the serves or volleys of the women players. I don't know if there are stats which show how many times Andreev & Ram made UE's when returning Kirilenko's & Chakvetzade's serves or volleys. But it would be good to know.

Hopefully, some day we will have mixed doubles on tv and online more often. It is truly the best part of the game.

Got to agree. She's really at home in doubles play most of the time and I think she's more comfortable and less stressed with doubles. Plus she has Igor there. She really held up that match which I wasn't shocked about at all. They're a good team.

I was shocked that Kiri just came into that match and dominated all players. Happy shock though.

Haas' girlfriend was the most important person on the crowd today, we saw her everytime, she must be Tommy's coach as she's always talking to him:lol:.

I think that they didn't even recognize Maria with her cap, that's why we didn't see her.

Nothing to do for Igor, Tommy was too strong, this day was awful with Ana's injury
