Dinara Safina has won her first match against Anna-Lena Grönefeld very convincingly in two sets: 6-0, 6-3.

“It is my first match on grass”, Safina said afterwards and she complimented her opponent Anna-Lena Grönefeld. “She played good tennis, in the second set I got a bit lucky.” Dinara Safina, for the fifth time at the Ordina Open, is glad she has come back to Rosmalen. “I like the atmosphere here, it’s quite nice and I feel nice coming back here. I was so disappointed last year when I lost in the final.” Now she’s taking it one step at a time. “Let’s see if I can make it this year.”

Cirstea/Safina vs Errani/Pennetta
They started on court 1, but then the match on centre court ended early (Baghdatis fell and hurt his knee) and the supervisor came on court after 3 games to ask the players if they wanted to move to centre court (I think it was Dinara’s idea actually, but not sure). They had no objection, so they moved :o Quite crazy.....
About the match: 1st set was really exciting. Sorana started great, mainly thanx to her Dinara and she went up 5-2. But then Flavia and Sara were used to centre court, I guess, and started playing great. They fought back and went 6-5 up. Of course they got broken then but they took the tiebreak and then it was much easier in the 2nd set. One of these matches that are decided by a tough 1st set, I’m sure if Dinara and Sorana had won the tiebreak (and they did have the chance to) they would have won the match.
Surprisingly, Sara was the best player on court. She was great from the baseline, and all the training on volleys that she did clearly paid off because she won most if not all volleyrallies too.

Safina vs Shvedova
Another case of “just not good enough”. Yari started really well, early in the 1st set I had the idea she might break Dinara and it might get really tough, but Dinara held on, and after she broke late in the 1st set, Yari’s resistance broke, allowing Dinara an early lead which she never let go.
Dinara is still not playing great, but she’s one of these players who always seems to do what’s needed to win, and if playing well is not needed, she doesn’t. I’m sure she can do better than this.

She does, she looks adorable. Come on, Adidas. She can do better for you, you just have to give her something to work with. :p

I heard that too, and I think it's much better. She's got to learn to think on her own, and grass season when she has almost no expectations anyway is the perfect time to experiment.

I agree with you. she need to ween herself off of Z and now is the perfect time. So that when the time comes she is not looking up to him for guidance every second.

hardly bearable match.
pushing, pushing, pushing, and what a surprise, more pushing... and then fought like 10 min, Dani choked like usual, and she went back to pushing and pushing and...

MM and serve won the match.

She definitely needs to use more angles and come in more, but I'm still pretty pleased with how she's doing here. It's a lot of experimenting at once (no Z at matches, clearly trying to bring her serve toss down, etc.) and she's coming through pretty well. No, she's not playing her best tennis, but today she managed a decent turn-around against a player who's clearly better on grass than she is. I'm still not expecting her to go much farther than 4th round or QF at Wimbledon, and I totally expect her to lose to Tamarine tomorrow, but it's encouraging to see her get right down to work on the things that really clearly needed to change.

I kinda feel bad that I'm sort of annoyed it's not a weaning mechanism. But hopefully she can realise that not only Z can have such an impact on a match, MM came on and got her to focus and she turned it around.

uh, i was so wrong. AELTC would disqualificate her after this match.

i don't know if they used to watch taped matches, but i think Z must watch this with Dina, popcorn and some drink. and we need a secret camera, i want to see their expressions.

"What did you do?!?!?"
"i know i know"
"You're 10 feet behind baseline..."
...
"...running like a roadrunner!"

"You have to go for shots!"
"i hate this tournament"
