Considering Anna normally draws a seed in the first round of dubs that's not a bad draw.

I never look past the first round of Anna's doubles draws. But I just found out Gallovits/Marosi are qualifiers so they are already on a winning streak. Not such good news after all.

If Anna loses to Lisicki she will drop to about 60.
And when New Haven points come off..
She'd better win some matches

If Anna loses to Lisicki she will drop to about 60.
And when New Haven points come off..

she will be nowhere near as low as 60. with everyones wimbledon points off shes down to 34, if she loses 1st round she will obviously be overtaken by some, but judging by the ranking points she will be no lower than 45 after wimbledon with a 1st round loss.

OK, this is slightly off topic, but why didn't Chaky shake hands with Bartoli? (Eastbourne '09, R2)

bartoli took an injury time out on chaks serve at 2-3 30-30, in there last match bartoli took 2 time outs, the 2nd at *5-6 final set when anna was serving to stay in the match. anna thinks shes a cheat and bending the rules, most normal people do to.

I'm watching a b etfair stream. They have lots of the matches. You need to register with them but no credit card details needed. If they ask you to fund your account, don't listen to them, just login on the main page first them click on live videos and it should work, at least it does for me.

Woo, took it on her 4th set point. Phew. Was worried after 40-0 became 40-30! Lisicki is serving hard but seems Anna is doing well... time to register at *******... annoyingly the BBC left court 18 just before Anna came on...

Yeah, if she gets another break she will probably be safe, but Anna with one break is still not totally safe yet. But in a winning position nonetheless. She has been serving well so maybe she can keep holding for long enough to close it.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:41 PM
Oh dear, here comes the fightback from Sabine. 3-3.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:41 PM

Daszmarelli
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:42 PM

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:43 PM
I think Anna's best chance is to break here. I'm not sure she will hold the next game if Sabine holds, but right now Anna has a good chance to break.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:47 PM
Anna misses a break point at 3-3... well, Lisicki saved it with a pretty fabulous drop shot off of Anna's return. Still looking ok, but a few really loose returns off slow 2nd serves (but I guess that's what happens when you're fending off a load of 115+mph bombs)

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:48 PM
Wow, what a good bh drop from Sabine, then a huge serve and then a missed second serve return from Anna, down 3-4 serving now. Sabine hit a big serve long and Anna contacted late and almost knocked out a ballkid (and the umpire stand). But no one was hurt. Difficult service game for Anna coming up.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:49 PM
30-15 in this key game. Anna's groundies are still looking nice.

fish_wilson
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:49 PM
Anna needs to get her first serve going again.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:50 PM
I think her service rhythm has not completely deserted her, but it was fabulous before. She holds to 4-4, now is the time to break, otherwise the next service game will be even tougher. Anna's fh today is .

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:52 PM
nice break, Anna - now, she served out the first set well... can she do it again? This has been the stumbling block for her in the past 18months... can she hold her nerve and get those first serves in?

fish_wilson
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:52 PM
C'mon Anna!

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:54 PM
Great point from Anna, the pressure told on Sabine and she helped Anna out with a df to give her a bp, then Anna played well to take it. A few good serves and good points and Anna can go recover.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:55 PM
Two bad netted shots to concede the break back, grrr, Anna must get her nerves back in control.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:55 PM
Looovely shot from Sabine at 15-15...

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 03:58 PM
Sigh, an amazing angle from Sabine and a couple of netted shots from Anna, and now its 5-5. Got to try to break again.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:01 PM
And now Anna faces a real test, trying to hold at 5-6 to reach the tiebreak. This game is so important, if Anna wins it she at least gives herself a chance to take the set, and gives Sabine a chance to feel the pressure and maybe make some errors. Also winning this game would mean Anna was guaranteed to at least serve first in the last set even if it went to three.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:03 PM
She holds! Now an early minibreak would be lovely.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:03 PM

some really stupid errors :help:

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:10 PM
Ouch. Some costly errors in the tiebreak and Lisicki does take the set. Boohoo.... now we need 2006-2007 mental toughness Anna to come out and stamp her authority on the third set.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:12 PM
And now Sabine held twice, so... even though it's on serve, she's up one minihold... and now Anna loses her next serve point. SP to Sabine. And she takes it. Sabine held two pts in the tiebreak, Anna held only once. That was the difference.

fish_wilson
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:12 PM
Shes not weak. Miss Chakvetaze has kept her composure well today. No tantrums. And she will prevail in the end.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:13 PM
Well, my first impression is that this commentator isn't too bad. Anna needs to get out of this game though, needs to save these bps.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:13 PM
And now we have a commentator . I really preferred it with no commentator, I don't think the commentators really know what they are talking about most of the time, plus you can feel the atmosphere better with no commentator.

Vespertine69

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:15 PM

HowardH

Anna what are you doing? What happened to her rhythm on the fh? Anna now must hold, must hold, there is no other choice if she wants to win.

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:21 PM
Hmm, Anna asking for the trainer... bad sign, but could explain why her forehand has become so dire in the past few games.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:21 PM
Good strong cc fh from Anna to get to 40-30. And she holds. Now she has requested the trainer for her arm.

fish_wilson
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:21 PM
Anna takes a medical break. Says its for her arm. Umpire says no, Anna says "I can't play"

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:28 PM
Not sure what was with the umpire initially refusing the medical timeout? Any guesses, it was at change of ends... as soon as she got to her chair...

sammy01
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:29 PM
so is she having treatment?

fish_wilson
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:31 PM
yup. Match is on again now

Vespertine69
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:32 PM
so is she having treatment?

Had it, yes... seems like a muscle complaint of some sort, since she received a lot of massage and some kneading.

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:34 PM
I don't think the umpire was refusing her timeout, the commentator thought so but I thought she maybe asked Anna if she could wait and Anna said she couldn't. Something like that, it was hard to hear and I think the commentator misunderstood. Anna has to hold, 40-0 to deuce

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 04:35 PM

Winning points when you need them.
So what's her new ranking going to be in 2 weeks?

Wintermute
Jun 23rd, 2009, 05:05 PM
So Anna was three points from winning in the second set tiebreak. Tough loss. I got to watch some of the final set. She had the trainer massaging her arm. It didn't seem to affect her serving too much but there was little on her groundies.

Unfortunately Anna had a break point at 2-5* but she left a ball which she could have returned, thinking it was out, but it was on the baseline. Pretty stupid mistake and I'd like to think it's not the sort of error she'd make when she had a clear head. But I'm sure the injury was bothering her.

Anna still looks like she's playing with little confidence. She needs to rebuild her game from the ground up. She should have won this.

Oh dear, DF to go 2-5. Just not good enough today from Anna. Credit to Lisicki for tightening up her game, but Anna has just been spraying the ball since she served for the match at 5-4 in the second.its because when things get tight, anna chokes. She doesn't hit out her forehand fully, which leads to mountain of UEs.

Sigh, didn't Sabine have a cold though?

Tough loss
it seemed like it. she was coughing towards the end.

I think its pretty painfully obvious that Anna should join Nicole Vaidisova and Alize Cornet at WTA Career Rehab Center!

HowardH
Jun 23rd, 2009, 05:21 PM
She was playing with a lot of confidence for the first 1 and a half sets, her service rhythm was excellent, her fh was penetrating and accurate, overall was just looking good but we always knew there was a chance it would start to go wrong. It wasn't that big a surprise that she lost the early break in the second set, that was a long time for Anna to try to hold onto 1 break, an extra break would have been helpful and she was quite close to getting that extra break a couple of times. She didn't play well enough when trying to serve out at 5-4. The tiebreak 4-2 was deceptive, there had only been 1 pt held to serve so it was always possible for it to easily swing the other way.

So I wouldn't say she had a huge lead at any point, but she was ahead and in a winning position several times. But so often winning positions require you to still play pretty well to close out. Tennis is not like many other games, there is no time limit, you must finish your opponent. Anna has just been unable to do this.

In many other sports if you have a large enough lead you are safe, it doesn't matter whether your opponents play better than you near the end, because they won't have enough time to catch up. In tennis there is no such thing, you must finish the job by playing better than them until the end. The special scoring system tennis uses ensures that there are many big pressure points and almost no lead is unsurmountable. If we compare something similar in many ways such as badminton, we find that often a lead simply becomes so large it cannot possibly be recovered from. For instance, it would be almost impossible to come back from a 20-10 lead. If your opponent is simply not allowed to lose a single point for many points in a row then the task becomes nearly impossible. But in tennis, each game is separated, so opponents are allowed the odd bad shot so long as they win the game in the end. Therefore a 5-0 lead can be recovered from, there will only be a few moments where the person has a chance to finish the match and these few moments can be survived. So tennis requires a person to be mentally tough and to take these few crucial points, it's a real battle of minds. And lately Anna has been losing that battle

Jun 23rd, 2009, 05:33 PM
On the positive side, first set was very sweet, Anna played calm and accurate, so its all coming back to her, slowly.

This is so sad. :(
This is two super early losses at the last two big opens. I may not be seeing Anna play on actual television again for a long time at this rate. I hope she has at least some of her form and competitiveness back by the time the US Open comes around.

Iggy
Jun 24th, 2009, 12:11 AM
Yeah, I expected more from Anna today. It's a damned shame.
My two thoughts:
#1 What's her coach doing? A year's slump means something's not working!
#2 Time to take a time to re-tool in some lower tier tourneys. She's still young and has time to get things back together.

HowardH
Jun 24th, 2009, 07:33 AM
Now that I've had time to sleep on it I think that the match overall was not bad from Anna, we saw some nice serving for a large part of the match, some excellent fhs, and she seemed to be (a little bit) calmer during the match than she has been for most of her matches in the last year, even though she never was happy. Unfortunately when she let Sabine survive the second set Sabine began to get confident and Anna's level dropped a bit. But I think that Anna's recent performances have definitely shown some improvement.

sammy01
Jun 24th, 2009, 08:03 PM
well shes redeemed herself a bit by winning her doubles 1st round 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, her and camerin saved a match point in the 2nd set.

im not sure how serious chaks taking the doubles, but if i was her id treat any time on court with total concentration as winning matches and playing in tight situations is what she needs.

as for the singles yesterday, its so plain to see chaks affraid of winning, the forehand becomes pushy and decelerates, ending in a mountain of UE's. it was rather painful to watch that 3rd set from anna yesterday.

shes also entered the mixed doubles with andy ram, hes a very good player, they play andreev and kirilenko 1st round.
