View Full Version : Lack of Williams' support is nothing new

It's a shame that crowds aren't responding more warmly to the great tennis Venus and Serena have been playing this year but it's really a compliment to their abilities. Through the course of tennis history Navratilova, Evert, Graf and Seles were not popular #1s because they seemed clearly ahead of the rest. They only became crowd favourites whenever they were usurped or seemed vulnerable. Serena and Venus are currently easily the best two players in the world. Fans want to see a match so will root for the underdogs. Like a lot of champions they are underappreciated at their peak but I guarantee if they stay on the tour for several years their popularity will grow.

PS: Come on Venus - win tonight's final!

Also I really don't think it's anything to do with race. Obviously you get some moronic rednecks for who it's an issue but Zina Garrison and Lori McNeil played for years on the WTA tour with huge support. I'll always remember the FM crowd cheering Lori on to a victory over Evert.

I think Volcana in the other thread has given a probable answer to this mystery, check out the thread in GM about the same topic
