COVERSTORY: Anna! Is She For Real?
(This story has not been edited yet)
ALSO GO TO kournikova.com to hear the anna song! it is SO funny!!!

Women’s Tennis has had its share of stars and beauties over the years ranging from the exotic Gabriela Sabatini to the girl next door Chris Evert. But arguably no star has shone quite like the 21 year old Russian beauty Anna Kournikova. Angered and disgraced in her first round Wimbledon loss to fellow Russian Tatiana Panova this year and the following BBC television interview gone bad, Kournikova went on a summer hardcourt winning streak of sorts. In California, though fresh off numerous injuries she posted wins over among others the former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez and fellow hotshot Alexandra Stevenson to compile a 6-2 record with semifinal and quarterfinal finishes before falling in hard-fought battles to top four ranked players Venus Williams and Jelena Dokic. Recently voted the sexiest woman in the world by a top men’s magazine and possibly forever the topic of thousands of “high quality” image websites, Anna Kournikova is most definitely very beautiful as well as a still promising tennis talent, but is she for real?

In Moscow, on Sunday, June 7th, 1981, Alla and Sergei Kournikov gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Anna. Coming from an athletic family, Alla was a tennis player and Sergei, a Greco-Roman wrestler; it is no wonder that at the prodigious age of five, Kournikova started to play tennis. Competing with friends for fun and using a tennis racket paid for with a sold family television, Anna quickly attracted interest for her talent at such a young age and a contract with IMG. In February of 1992 at age 10, she moved to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, to be with her coach, Nick Bollettieri. But after a world number one junior ranking and an explosive pro debut which included losing to Steffi Graf as a qualifier in the fourth round of the 1996 US Open, Kournikova’s career took unexpected rollercoaster twists and turns from which she has yet to fully recover.

A coaching merry-go-round, a slew of injuries, the arrival of bigger and stronger power players such as the Americans Venus and Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport as well as her own tactical oncourt immaturity may have for the moment prevented singles grand slam titles from Kournikova, but nothing has or seemingly could ever stop Anna’s success commercially. Despite never having won a singles title in any professional tennis event, Anna Kournikova banks upwards of fifteen million dollars annually due in part to her superstar good looks which remain a source of criticism for her. Asked one too many times if her face interferes with her tennis in a post match press conference Kournikova snapped, “I can’t change my face! I would have to be reborn.” Adidas sportswear, Omega watches, Yonex tennis rackets, Lycos internet search engine and Berlei bras are most notable corporate sponsors capitalizing on Kournikova’s wide-ranging sex appeal. “Only the balls should bounce” quipped the latter. Anna has it seems even traded long time “friend” and hockey player Sergei Federov in for hipper singer Enrique Igelesias in whose music video “Escape” Anna appeared. Not to be outdone, independent pop band Binge recently announced the release of their new CD; with the both the CD and the first rocking single being entitled, what else? “Anna Kournikova.” Sample lyrics go: “Anna Kournikova, I kinda wanna know ya. Anna Kournikova with the eyes so blue! If it wasn’t for tennis, I would never know you. You can stay at my place if you want to crash. Backhand, forehand, overhand smash! Let me be your ballboy now!” But would Kournikova prefer Jennifer Lopez’s hit single “I’m Real”?

It’s the same old question asked in endless variations. One wonders if Anna might hear it in her sleep. Q. “Do you have a goal Anna for your first tournament win?” Now Anna seems to have developed her own endless variations answer. “The good thing is that I did play well, you know, in the last couple months or so, so that's a good thing. But, you know, I guess I'll just have to, you know, do better and work harder next time.” Friendly and smiling one second, an icy staredown the next. Anna Kournikova goes on to state she is just here to play tennis. She was ranked as high as number eight in 2000-01 and has won two Grand Slam tournament doubles titles. Can past wins over Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport be all that far away? Lingering injuries forced her out of the top 100 this year, but she has climbed back to number thirty seven training six hours a day with Coach Harold Solomon. Chris Evert, a six-time U.S. Open champion, says Kournikova is playing her best tennis in three years. "I would not count her out," Evert says. "She still has the talent and movement to have a shot." A US Open first round flop may have eliminated tennis’ Russian star for now but she will return. And what will this fall and the 2003 season bring for Anna?

Through the years Kournikova has shown an impeccable work ethic and has developed a versatile all-court game but has problems still with her shot selection and her balance of patience and aggression. A thumb and a wrist injury have taken tolls on her serve and overall game but Anna remains confident that her game will come back together soon.
"Sometimes people are rougher on me," Kournikova told us. "If that's what they think, well, then good luck to them. I don't have to prove anything or convince anybody to think good things about me. I'm doing my thing, and you can't please everyone. I'm back in the USA and wanted to check in and say hi. I was so happy to be back at Wimbledon this year! It was really difficult to have to sit it out last year because of my injury. For me, it's a very special place--the traditions and the history make it different from any other tournament, and I always look forward to playing there. I had a great time playing doubles with Chanda Rubin. We made it to the semifinals and defeated the number one seeds and defending Wimbledon champions Raymond and Stubbs along the way. Jonas Bjorkman and I had fun playing together in mixed doubles, and we got to the quarterfinals. I am working hard to prepare for my upcoming tournaments.” Anna Kournikova may never be the number one tennis player in the world, but in fact she is already number one in the hearts of millions of tennis fans and non-fans worldwide. "Anna is the real thing," says tennis legend Billie Jean King. "She's great off the ground and quick. Most of all, she loves the limelight and loves the show courts. She's having a good time out here and is poised for the big time."

I think Anna is promoting Omega watches in this event, but the article focuses on her tennis and her life a little.

Well that's your opinion Dawn, how about posting a pic of yourself and we will see how your face compares??

Obviously it is a slow news day, if we have to go a search for pics of Anna that are 20 mths old, yes 20 mths, this pic is from the Hong Kong exhibition in 2001..

Just tell me what is wrong with it??

That's not Anna K. Isn't it a picture of that Anna Nicole Smith woman who married the old billionaire? I think this is to promote her new talkshow or something like that!

What does Anna know about lawn tennis?
Or tennis in general. :)

Ajay, her face looks overly made up, not natural looking. She is posing in a bra with bold gold jewlrey, not very tasteful imho. She looks quite cheap. Who wears bras with BOLD gold jewlrey and alot of make-up? What is she a belly dancer? I don't like sports women becoming tools for a bunch of men, who are only interested in her as an object instead of a tennis player. In other words I don't think people who bought this mag are interested in Anna's tennis, just her tits and ass. I also think I have a cuter face then Anna's. I don't think she is all that. In fact Maria Sanchez Lorenzo will blow her out the box. Although Anna is not ugly either.

Sorry, this is my opinion. Maybe whoring was too harsh, but she doesn't have to look like an object like this.

The pic is NOT from Hong Kong tennis event. It is from an Omega watch promo party. And they are paying Anna a lot of money and she is getting free very nice watches so I don't see anything wrong with showing a little skin. Venus had a big hole in her top in Melbourne that one year and you could see a lot of her tits. I am going to try and attack a pic of Anna in the exact same outfit but she is holding up her arm in this second pic and you can see the Omega watch. Now hopefully Omega wont demand to remove the cover pic now that they have been exposed as the source of the photo.

But tis was supposed to be about Anna's tennis ("Is she for real?") but I suppose with no article posted yet and with a face and body like that it is obvious that her looks will dominate the discussion.

See the attached pic to see that see in promoting a watch. I will try to post the tennis article from this magazine before the ladies' semifnals. And to Dawn, people who are getting this magazine already subscribed to it so they have no clue if Anna is going to be on the cover or not with her tits or not. Just wanted to clarify that.

We're all entitled to our opinions about Anna's looks ;)

But what it comes down to is that if someone flashed me some bills to pose in a red bikini like thing and gold necklace I'd do it no sweat :)

Anna didn't ask to be so photogenic, she just is.

that reminds me of what Lin-C said. I am liking Lin-C more and more each day. she is telling the truth and not being sour grapes or holding anything back Lin-C is approaching the Richard Williams honestly in your face zone. I think Lin-c said something like this about Anna: "She didn't ask to be this pretty." And of course Anna has said, "I can't change my face. I would have to be reborn."

Very true, but the omega promo was in Hong Kong, when she was playing in the exhibition in Jan 2001..

Anna Kournikova to bring out her own beauty products

Anna Kournikova is to bring out her own line of beauty products.

The 21-year-old will join the ranks of Jennifer Lopez and David Bowie's wife Iman by introducing her own product line in 2003.

According to the Austrian Press Agency, the head of Kournikova's management firm Octagon in Austria, Marc Habermann, has reached an agreement with the German cosmetic group LR International Cosmetics.

The German company will work together with the tennis star and Octagon to create the product line.

It will start with perfume, shower gel, body lotion, deodorant and unisex fragrance and should go on sale next year.

Kournikova's latest move is unlikely to impress her other sponsors who have already said she should concentrate on improving her game rather than her looks.

Adidas boss Herbert Hainer was among the sponsors who complained. He said: "Being a beauty queen is not enough."

Hainer demanded that the Russian tennis player concentrate more on her game than her PR schedule.

"She will have to train harder and then hopefully win her first singles tournament," he said.

Geez I can't believe they left out the sunblock stuff ....with anna pitching it for them, they could probably sell it at indoor tournaments and still make a profit.........slow on the uptake these LR international Cosmetic guys , she should probably go with a different company.

Ouch Dawn! Your comments about Anna are a little harsh, even for you! Sometimes I think you might be a tad jealous of Anna! ;) Dawn dear, you may be cuter and bustier than Anna. But Anna is probably taller than you. That's it!

But I have to admit that I'm not thrilled about Anna coming out with her own beauty line like Jennifer Lopez and Iman. This is something else for people to think of Anna as something other than a tennis player.

Once again I dont understand all of the "she needs to focus more on tennis" bits

We read about her outside activities - I imagine that if everything Iva Majoli did was published we could say the same things about her (how dare she go to a party, have a boyfreind, brush her hair, etc etc ).

Just because Anna makes money off of her looks, doesn't mean she owes people anything.

Cat I disagree with your opinons. Just because someone thinks Anna is selling herself like a object does not mean they are jealous of her. She is not the only media star that I express this kind of opinion about. I don't think sports women with loads of money and wish to be taken seriously should do these kinds of ads. Anna is nice looking, but she is not the most beautfiul women imho. Halle Berry though is a knockout.

Dawn, I agree Hally is as good as it gets!! But Anna is amazingly hot also. Here is the Binge CD COVER: attached.

And Dawn you seem very critical of Anna, but Anna has done no nudity so far. What about Halle's boobs in "Sowrdfish" and dont forget the full frontal nudity and sex scence in "Monsters Ball." A role that Vanessa Williams and Angela Bassett reportedly turned down because of the heated sex. And I have seen that movie and Halle is very good in it and the sex scene is OMG!!!
