View Full Version : please help? re: Parents as coaches

A lot of the girls on tour are coached or have been coached by their parents - we all know that - but I had/have it in my head that they are reluctant to ditch them even if it means career suicide. I don't have much info on them, but would really like to know who has had parental coaches, when they had them, when and why they got rid of them, and if they took them back later. Or you could just give ur opinion on someone's coaching situation. V interested in it.

what i have now is basically blank, but i'd like to update it when people post stuff. will prob look better when updated too :p There'll be giant gaps in this, but thats why i am asking :)

Serena Williams - Mum and Dad - others were involved but not in spotlight?
Venus Williams - Mum and Dad - ditto.
Capriati - Dad - Always been coach? Outisde help occasional - e.g. Soloman
Kournikova - Mum - same as Capriati?
Hingis - Mum - always has been, always will?
Seles - Dad - Nurtured child into champ - of course other coaches involved today.
Pierce - Dad - Then went through a gazillion coaches, re-contacted him in 2000 and worked together for a while.
Dokic - Dad - Has different trainers, not sure about coaches.
Maleeva - Mum - not had any coach for few years though?
Bedanova - Dad - no info at all!
Stevenson - Mum - and isn't she lovely? Other coaches been involved.
Cara Black - Had huge family tennis life in past - guessing dad taught her everything she knows.
Safina - Mum - Also has other coaches.

In an earlier thread where it was suggested that JenCap needs to hire a new service coach, I said I didn't think that would happen. My reasoning is that I feel it is very hard for players to part ways with a coach who is also a parent. From what I've heard, Brad Gilbert has espressed an interst in coaching Hingis, but she has not responded, and I don't see her doing it becuase of her relationship with her mom. In these situations it is a lot harder to get rid of a coach because it is not just player-coach, but mother-daughter, father-daughter.

During Dementieva's doubles match today they said that she was coached by Safin's mom for a while, but left when she felt that Marat and Dinara were getting all the attention.
