with a win over Davenport, and Venus loss in SF.
or with Davenport and Mauresmo victories in SF.
or with a title (no matter whom she plays).
or with a Mauresmo win in the SF over Venus.
Can be #1:
If she takes the title.
If she beats Venus in the SF --> #6
If she wins the title (no matter who she plays) --> #4
If she beats Serena, and Venus beats Mauresmo --> #6
If she beats Serena, and Mauresmo beats Venus --> #7
If she wins the title over Venus --> #4
If she wins the title over Mauresmo --> #6
Jennifer will be #3 no matter what - as nobody can quite catch her. She's the only one in the top 8 that are 'locked' into their current position.

Further ranking scenario: The dangerous player as far as rankings are concerned will be Kim next year. She has had a shocker of a year and now that she has recovered from her injury, her game is gradually improving, making her much more likely to gain points next year than continue to lose them. If Mauresmo can keep up her current form, she is also likely to rise...but I can't see the Williams sisters moving from the top at this stage unless they get injured

I must have calculated wrong cos I thought Venus could still take #1 even by beating Serena in the final. If you have them handy, could you please post the numbers in that scenario? If you don't have them handy, don't worry about it, I'll work it out somehow

I think Seles maybe forgot bonus points

No, I didn't forget quality points.
If she wins the title beating Lindsay & Venus: 5544
If she wins the title beting Lindsay & Amelie: 5480
If she loses in the final: 5200
If she loses in the semis: 4950
If she wins the title beating Amelie & Serena: 5237
If she wins the title beating Amelie & Lindsay: 5123
If she loses in the final: 4843
If she loses in the semis: 4593

so really its Serena's bonus points that will give venus the number 1 ranking if she were to beat her in the final? and how many bonus points would venus get for beating serena (number 1)? if venus and serena get to this final, it will be the most drama filled ever! Serena going for 3 slams in a row. Venus going for the 3 peat. And now the number 1 ranking is up for grabs!

Venus would get 200 quality points for beating Serena, the #1. It is usually 100 quality points for beating the world #1, but in the grand slams, it is doubled.

Either way my two favourites are still going be #1 and #2. :)
I apologise that I caused you to delete your thread for the Bryans. :o

Seles, it wouldn't matter who Venus beat for the title.

Probably right....I'll be tempted to do the math if only 1 of the sisters lose. If it's Sister Slam 4, I won't rightly care.
I'll go edit that post tho', thanks for reminding me.

You don't need to do any math. You've shown right there that if Serena loses her semi and Venus wins hers, that cuts the gap to 107 points. Obviously Venus would get far more than that for beating Lindsay (280 to be exact). Remember, 200 Quality points are great to get, but winning the Final is 194 Round points.

It's always a hobby of mine to watch the ranking number go up and down. For Monica, she earned 268 at the US Open, but loses 276 next week. So pretty much she's right back where she started last month. ;)

Hmmm... I hope Venus gets the number 1 ranking by winning the slam! :)

The rankings are secondary for Venus at the moment. The title is much more important. IMO, she'd rather take the title than the ranking.
The wisdom in tennis is this:
get the titles first and formeost, the ranking will take care of itself!

Is it OK if we start the argument now that Serena is the real No1
