View Full Version : Venus and Serena - pulling away from the rest.

Sep 5th, 2002, 01:01 AM
Far from the rest of the WTA tour providing a greater challenge to Venus and Serena since last year, it seems that the Williams girls are pulling farther AWAY from all the rest.

Look at the evidence:

A year or two ago, both Venus and Serena were strong, fast and had the most powerful serves in the game.
HOWEVER, they still had weaknesses that other payers could exploit to topple them regularly, or at least give them some close matches.

Now, however, Venus and Serena are stronger, faster, still have by far the most powerful serves in the women's game (stronger than many men's) but have ADDED experience, matchcraft, maturity and CONSISTENCY. No more "walkabouts". No more gifting away the first set.

The truth is that there is virtually no one now to TROUBLE Venus or Serena. People like Lindsay, Monica, Martina, Kim, Justine and Jennifer, who USED to trouble the sisters, have all fallen BACKWARD over the past year. New stars like Amelie and Daniela, have not yet got the consistency or weaponry.

Over the past year or so, Venus and Serena have improved on already dominating games. Venus still has a weakness on her 2nd serve, but few people can make capital out of it. As for Serena, in FIVE matches to reach the Semi's, she has lost a TOTAL of 14 games. In only ONE set did she lose as many as 3 games. So it took five opponents, in five full matches to put together enough games against her to win ONE match! three of the beaten players were seeds.

An all Williams final looks increasingly certain. Can they continue to pull away from all the rest.

I think it's unfair to Serena to lump Venus with her. Serena is the story. Going on current form at the Open, this continues to be the story.

So why steal Serena's show???

I know Venus hasn't won a slam this year, but has she even won a Tier 1?

Serena deserves the spotlight, Venus sure got the whole spotlight when she was winning.

Venus has won 18 straight matches and is undefeated since Wimbledon. She has alson won as seven tournaments (the most of any player in the WTA this year), and has lost only ONE SET in two years at the U.S. Open (to Chanda yesterday) and she STILL has won more GS majors, as well as maintaining a higher winning percentage overall in GS majors, tournaments, and matches won than her equally amazing younger sister. And guess what?--Venus still leads in matches won head-to-head against Serena. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Venus's "current form." That's a ridiculous assertion given the objective evidence. So as much as you irrationally hate Venus evadafan, it is far more unfair (and blatantly inaccurate) to suggest that Serena, as great as she obviously is, is the ONLY story or that to assert in properly acknowledging Venus's stunning and extraordinary record that Serena is being "tainted" by being mentioned in tandem with her sister as the "two greatest players in the WTA." You should be reminded that "between them" Venus and Serena have won 101 matches in 2002 thus far (Venus has won 59 of those), lost only 10 matches (they've only lost 7 of those to players not named 'Williams') and that they 'share' 12 titles this year (which is one short of what, say, Capriati has LIFETIME). So it's clear that there are TWO major stories at the U.S. Open this year whether you like it or not. And those narratives are both named WILLIAMS. You sound like Ted Robinson & Tracy Austin who today before Venus's match with Monica tried to make equally false, unsubstantiated claims regarding Venus and Serena. Well all three of you are WRONG.

I didn't say anything about Venus's past success. Who cares that Venus has won more slams than Serena. Monica and Martina have won more than both of them. I am talking about the story right here, right now. SERENA IS THE STORY. When Venus won Wimby and the open the last two years everyone talked Venus this, Venus that. Now Serena is the grand slam Champ and #1 in the world, all we here is Williams sisters this, Williams sisters that. It's really unfair and I'm surprised you don't see it.

Informative... great post, but it won't mean jack to eva. Eva is seeing RED my friend.. and wants windy Ashe Stadium KNOCKED DOWN, cause Eva feels that it robbed Monica Seles of the match tonight LOL!!!!

Didn't you even read the very first sentence of my post? (let alone the rest of it!) "Winning 18 straight matches" IS THE PRESENT--it clearly refers to her LAST 18 matches since THIS YEAR'S WIMBLEDON (I also posted all of the details of Venus's current record at both this tournament and througout THIS YEAR. That's CURRENT. Repeat: These ARE her CURRENT SUCCESSES. I also listed her past records and demonstrated, again in detail, how her current success is a CONTINUATION of her PRESENT SUCCESS. Geez!! It's not "unfair" to acknowledge that they are the top two players because that's who they are! What's unfair is to pretend that the major story at the USO this year is ONLY Serena or ONLY Venus. I've already indicated why. I'm surprised you don't (or won't) see that...

What are you talking about. "the haters?" I cannot believe you say you like Serena but don't see that she isn't being given her due. The little sister that has come to dominate this year an all she gets is lumped with the #2 player, her big sister. Of course she could and would never say anything, but I'm sure she feels slighted.

When Monica dominated no one talked about the Monica/Steffi dominance, even though they were the top two players. The talk was of MONICA'S dominance. Steffi even beat Monica at Wimbledon. Has Venus even beaten Serena this year, who by the way didn't even play the first slam of the year where Venus lost in the quarters?

I don't think Ashe Stadium robbed Monica, she just didn't play well. All players hate that stadium, it's ridiculous. Did you see some of the shots even venus missed, she never would have done that outside Ashe Stadium. It makes for poor tennis to watch.

I am definitely pro williams but I am not blind. Chanda almost beat venus and she more than held her own. Chanda beat serena a few weeks ago.

When venus and serena have a complete season with no losses then I will say domination. Until then they are still beatable, why? because people have already done it this season.

Are they the best? yes, but lets not get too full overselves just because our favs are on a roll.

Thanks kiki and GrandSlammed--I'm just going to enjoy both the greatness Venus & Serena and forget about trying to reach others at this point. If someone doesn't know at this point that we are witnessing two of the greatest athletes in sports history (let alone tennis history), then nothing I could possibly say could convince them. Continue to rise above everything & everything Venus & Serena. You're the best in the world and no one can take that away from you!

Did Martina navratilova ever have a complete season with no losses? I know she won an extraordinary number of matches in an unbroken streak.

Wow. You really don't get it Informative. Wow.

They proved today that indeed... NO ONE, can take it away from them... ;)
