[choke] Awesome!

Except for Tokyo, she hasn't played really well since she gave up doubles; who knows, maybe she needs it for some low-pressure match play and a chance to practice her serve, volleying, etc. But I'm really happy to see her back in a doubles draw. :)

Now she just needs to show up...

Hello Domik Chicas:wavey:....I'll be sleeping,flu-free,in Mexico when most of you wake up to see this.

It shouldn't surprise you to see Ana nestled on Dina's shoulder as our gal wrapped a shawl around her Serbian snuggle-bunny on a chilly night for a gondola ride through Venice.Likewise,it shouldn't surprise you that a full-blooded Italian Ana fan agreed to help me translate the earlier suggestion for Dinara's Rome thread.Ana's devotee DID say that a typical Italian would use slightly different phraseology, but the translation for:Dinara Writes Her Name in Stone in the Eternal City is:

Dinara inscrive su pietra la sua eredita' nella citta' eterna

You may still pick something else if you wish,of course, but I felt that my lovely Domik Muses deserved maximum effort in the Name-selecting Department:hatoff:

Who is Dina's next opponent and when does she next play? (I don't like the website :()

Safina, whose match started after the rain, complained that the weather had made the courts too soft and, as a result, dangerous.

"I was just so angry because you can get injured," she said. "They tell us go and play because they think the court is fine but they are not playing on it.

"They have to have a little bit of respect for us as players."

SAFINA: 'WHEN THE COURT IS THAT SOFT, YOU'RE AFRAID TO PLAY'

Despite a long wait followed by a slow start, Dinara Safina defeated Virginie Razzano 7-6, 6-1 to set up a third round tie with Zheng Jie.

“It's always not easy waiting, especially when you are next on and they say at 6:00 you play, and then you see there is still rain,” said the world No1, whose match started around three hours later than scheduled. “You don't know what to do, when exactly to go warm up. You just hang in the locker room and not doing anything. It's not easy always waiting, but that's how it goes, we cannot change the weather.”

“I went on court pretty comfortable, but it was not easy to play,” the Muscovite continued. “The court was terribly slow and two times I fell down. You're afraid to play. It was very soft and difficult to slide as it was very wet. That's what happened when I went to play the drop shot. I wanted to slide, and then my leg got stuck and I rolled over.”

“She was giving my hard time, because she was playing pretty good,” said Safina of her French opponent who currently ranked No35 in the world. “She’d played already (in the first round) and she beat me at the beginning of the year (in Dubai), so I doubly wanted to beat her. I was a little bit tight, but winning the first set gave me confidence. I started to play a little bit better in the second. I was a little more aggressive"

More quotes here. http://www.tennis-open.net/news.php?nid=2240

The Russian was initially made to work hard before coming through 7-6 (7/1), 6-1 against France's Virginie Razzano.

Double reigning champion Jelena Jankovic was pushed to the brink by Argentine Gisela Dulko before going through 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) after her match had been delayed for three and a half hours by a torrential downpour.

But Safina, whose match started after the rain, complained that the weather had made the courts too soft and dangerous as it was difficult to slide.

"I was just so angry because you can get injured," said Safina, who fell over twice during her match.
"I mean, it's not funny. They tell us go and play because they think the court is fine but they are not playing on that court.

"Thank God I didn't break anything but if I broke something, I mean, so many players get injured.

"Then what should I say to the tournament? I (should) say thanks for pushing us to play?

"I mean, they would say: oh, we are sorry. But it's my career, it's three months off court (if you're injured).

"So they have to have a little bit of respect for us as players."

Safina struggled throughout the first set, dropping serve in the first and seventh games but breaking straight back on both occasions.

However, once she entered the tie-break it was a different matter as she took total command.

She sealed the tie-break 7-1 with a service winner and then romped through the second set for the loss of only one game.

The top seed will play Chinese 14th seed Zheng Jie in the 3rd round after she defeated Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2.

Woah, Rome..don't provoke her futher otherwise :scared:

SAFINA: 'HOW COULD I EVEN GET TO THIS POINT? THAT WASN'T ME PLAYING ON COURT...'

For someone who had just pulled off the comeback of the tournament, Dinara Safina was almost inconsolable in her post-match press conference. She had just dragged herself back from 2-5 down in the final set to defeat Zheng Jie 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(3) but her demeanour was more Federer post-Wimbledon than world No1 and Rome quarter-finalist.

“Of course I'm happy that I was still able to change the match,” she said, head bowed. “From 5 2 down I started at least to play a little bit better. But of course, just how could I even get to this point to be 5 2 down? After 5 2 she could hardly touch the ball until 6 5, and then again I became too passive. I'm just frustrated that I'm not playing my game at all. I'm practising and I'm playing great and aggressive, and suddenly I come on the court and it's 360 degrees, a completely different person playing on the court. I just don't understand what's going on with me, what is it with my brain. Every time I go on the court I go, “okay, I'm trying to play aggressive”, and I do totally opposite other thing. Way too passive and not the way that I have to play. This is just too frustrating and too sad. I know I can play better and this is just what is really upsetting me.”

“I think everything is a new situation for me,” she continued, shaking her head. “First time No1, playing and everybody expect me to win, but it’s not an excuse. I have to be stronger than this and know what I have to do. I go on the court and I know that I have to go for my shots and play them like I did at 5 2. But I didn't have to come to the point 5 2, especially after winning the second 6 1. I had to go and play like this, and then suddenly I play again totally another game. At least I hit the ball on match point. At least that. I went for my match point, and I hit it,” she concluded, at least making light of her situation. Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, Dinara…

SAFINA: 'SHE COULD HAVE WON THE MATCH'

No1 seed Dinara Safina was well aware of how close she came to being eliminated by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in a quarter-final tie which she eventually won 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

“You can see by the score it wasn't easy - she's a tough opponent to play,” said Safina of the lefty serve-and-volleyer. “She serves good, and there are not many players who play the same way, so of course it's always difficult to her, especially because she's lefty with great volleys and a great serve. She complicated pretty much the game - she could have won this match. First set, I had a plan to go for my shots, to hit them, and again, it was all about her. At 3-1 (in the second set), I changed and I won my service game. We changed the sides and I hit the returns and I just went a little bit on the side and she could not catch them anymore. I always had the chance to do something with the return, but just I wasn't doing it. Good that I did it at the end!”

“If you see me serving in practice, there’s no way that I serve double faults,” said Safina, who gave away 12 free points on her service. “I guess it's in my mind. Before the serve I was already in the fence trying to catch the return, so I was not finishing the serve, and this was the result. I was not taking one serve at a time, I was already thinking in the future, what I'm going to do with the next ball, instead of, first the serve then the second ball.”

“In the first singles match, I fell on the court and I twisted my ankle,” said the top-ranked player in the world when asked about the treatment she received in the second set. “It was fine, but as I was playing singles and doubles, and yesterday I played again three hours singles and then two hours doubles, on the warm up it started just being painful whenever I had to go down on this leg. Then it was just getting worse and worse. I have a big tournament coming up, so I had to call for the trainer so that at least it doesn't get even worse. That they could tape me and they could block the movement. I haven't played doubles for a long time, and .suddenly I decided to play, of course at the wrong moment, when I'm playing on clay court when the matches are not less than one hour. I don't know – I just wanted to have fun and play. What can I do? Wrong decision.”

MARQUEE MATCH-UPS FOR THE SEMIS

The meeting between Venus Williams and Dinara Safina will be another interesting one – not least because they both come from Grand Slam-winning families. Venus is a former world No1 while Dinara currently occupies that spot – a situation met with certain scepticism by the other Williams, Serena, who commented earlier in the week that “we all know who the best player in the world is… quite frankly, it’s me”. This before she was eliminated at the first hurdle…

Venus dropped a set to both Lucie Safarova and Anna Chakvetadze before stepping up a level and sweeping Agnieszka Radwanska aside 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. Dinara meanwhile has been plagued by inner demons, serving up a raft of double faults and being close to elimination against both Zheng Jie (2-5, 15-30 in the final set) and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (a set and 1-3 down) before battling back. If she makes a slow start against the elder Williams sister however, who won the previous two meetings between the pair, both on hard courts last year, then there will be no coming back, whatever the world rankings may say.

I don't think it's so serious. She was calling him out every 5 minutes all through Sydney, too, and she still made the finals of AO when she had to figure things out on her own. And I still think that doubles was a good idea, it just didn't work out very well-- as with so many things with Dinara, excellent concept, poor execution. :p But that wasn't anything anyone could control, except by choosing not to do it, and IMO it's clear that she needs some things to change around how she approaches tournaments, so it was worth a try.

I expect her to lose tomorrow, too, but honestly, I think that the semifinal losers in Rome get the best deal-- a first round bye in Madrid and an extra day (over the finalists) to acclimate to the altitude. For her, also, an extra day to get her ankle back in shape, not that I think it's all that serious to begin with.

KUZNETSOVA AND SAFINA - WE’LL MEET AGAIN!

In a repeat of last Sunday’s decider in Stuttgart, Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova will face each other in the final of this year’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Kuznetsova enters the final on the back of nine consecutive wins on clay – four here (dropping only one set on the way, to Flavia Pennetta in the third round) and five in Stuttgart at the indoor tournament which she won last Sunday, beating none other than Safina in the final in straight sets. Despite her current ranking of No8 in the world (which is set to rise after the tournament), she is playing some of the best tennis of her career, and her all-action style, retrieving seemingly every ball, has drawn comparisons with none other than men’s clay-court legend Rafael Nadal.

And what to say of Dinara Safina? She is world No1 on merit, despite what some may say and even if she is yet to bag a Grand Slam, and this week she has proved that she can win even when battling inner demons. The mantle of “world’s best player” has lain heavy on her shoulders and she was wracked with nerves against Zheng Jie and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez on Wednesday and Thursday, serving dozens of double faults and seemingly at a loss as to how to pull herself out of her mental slump – one which had affected her in Grand Slam final defeats to Ana Ivanovic (French open 2008) and Serena Williams (Australian Open 2009) as well as in the 2008 Olympic final (defeat to Elena Dementieva).

Then came Friday’s epic semi-final against Venus Williams, where she battled for over three hours in stifling heat against the most technically accomplished player on the circuit and emerged victorious. If that does not give her confidence, nothing will, but judging by her beaming smile in the interview room after the match, she is ready to step up to the next level. Whether her compatriot Svetlana will allow her to do so is another matter…

SAFINA: 'I WENT FOR MY SHOTS AND I DID THE RIGHT THING'

After an epic 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Venus Williams, an exhausted Dinara Safina was nevertheless brimming with confidence ahead of Sunday’s final against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

“I think it was (harder) mentally (than physically) because I’d never beaten her,” said Safina of her Grand Slam-winning opponent. “The moment came when I was 3 1 up in the third set, and I had to be a little bit more dominant on court, but I gave her the chance to come back. Then at 3 3, 4 3 again with the break, again I didn't play good at that moment. But still at the end I closed the game. It gives me a lot of confidence to beat such a big player like her, such a champion. I still went for my shots, that was the important thing. Even though I was serving at tight moments, I didn’t serve any double faults. On the break points I was going for my shots, and she was a little bit passive - I think she could have done more. I think she showed me she was also was maybe nervous, and that I went for the shots and I did the right thing.”

Friday’s win comes after the World No1 had had all the trouble in the world overcoming nerves and defeating eminently beatable opponents in the earlier rounds here at the Foro Italico, and looking like she was struggling mentally. “Sometimes you need this kind of matches, they help you. Even though I was not playing my best, still somehow I was managing to win, so this is a good thing for me - I was not able to do this before. I was playing maybe 50% and still I was going through and I always had another chance to win the next day. I think today it helped me to pull the match out in the end. Today's was a big match. To beat her is not easy. I hope this gives me even more proof that I deserve to be there, and it helps me maybe in the big stage like Grand Slams.”

Good Luck Dinara- rest up :yeah:Maz,everything in my Masculine Intuition told me that you girls were wrong when you predicted a Dina loss to Venus.I was sure that, unless Venus just came out and kicked ass with perfect tennis,Dinara was going to beat her...even if it took 3 sets.As for the final,I can't get a good read in my head, but aye DO see a parallel with last year where Dina whipped Elena a few times before Lena won her special Grand Slam in Beijing.I can see Dina losing to Sveta...and then stomping her when they play in RG,where it counts the most.Dinara has beaten SK 7 times so there shouldn't be ANY major confidence problem with two losses(IF it goes down that way)....I'm proud of our Temperamental-Babe Tennis Queen:D

Venus Williams was magnanimous after slipping to defeat in an epic three-set semi-final against world No1 Dinara Safina.

“I congratulate her on playing good tennis the whole match,” said a calm yet disappointed Williams in the press room. “She played well, continued to fight for every point - that's what you have to do on this surface. I wouldn't say I was passive. I would say that she went for every shot in the match. She just hit every ball as hard as she could. Obviously she doesn't want me to have the first shot or to take control. So if she can hit every ball that hard and keep it in, then congratulations to her.”

“I hit a lot of balls long,” said Williams of how her game changed after taking the first set. “I needed to add some more spin. Even the last shot - long, long, long. I'm going to have to work on that - when I'm going for my shots, hit it inside the court - it's pretty key!” she said with a wry smile.

It's nice to read that she gave Dina the credit for winning :)

Well Bruce, her serving was absolute shit against MJSM and Venus is one of the best returners of the game so I expected Dina's second serves to get eaten up.

I hope Dina wins- she needs one title at least before RG to get that winning feeling :pYour logic was plenty sound.......but aye KNEW that she was gonna raise her game for Venus....I could just tell that she was gunning for her 1st win vs. VW when I read her post-match comments following the MJMS near miss.Venus would've needed a near perfect show to stop Dina...NO DICE!!!:p

Dina's speeches are always golden. Usually she doesn't know who is sponsoring them but, today's was special. Can you imagine anyone else mentioning breast feeding in their speech and still looking so damn adorable.

SAFINA CAPS DRAMATIC WEEK WITH 2009 INTERNAZIONALI BNL D’ITALIA TITLE

After twice coming back from the brink of elimination in earlier rounds, No1 seed Dinara Safina coasted to victory in the final, defeating fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2.

Kuznetsova entered the final on the back of nine consecutive wins on clay – four at the Foro Italico (dropping only one set on the way, to Flavia Pennetta in the third round) and five in Stuttgart at the indoor tournament which she won the previous Sunday, beating none other than Safina in the final in straight sets. For Dinara however, the mantle of world No1 lay heavy on her shoulders, and she was wracked with nerves against Zheng Jie and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the third and fourth rounds, serving dozens of double faults and seemingly at a loss as to how to pull herself out of her mental slump – one which had affected her in Grand Slam final defeats to Ana Ivanovic (French open 2008) and Serena Williams (Australian Open 2009) as well as in the 2008 Olympic final (defeat to Elena Dementieva).

Both players were slow coming out of the blocks, and as is often the way with women’s finals, particularly the bigger ones, it was a case of which player could hold their nerve and get into a rhythm first. In the opening set, the two Russians tried to outdo each other in the unforced error stakes, with Safina the only player to hold in the first four games. Her 3-1 lead was reduced to 4-3 as she herself struggled to come to terms with the occasion, but just as it looked as if the match was Kuznetsova’s for the taking, the jitters changed sides. The No7 seed double-faulted and then netted a number of crucial forehands when seemingly under no pressure, and after breaking again, Safina chose that moment to raise her game and serve out confidently to take the first set 6-3.

The third game of the second set turned out to be the crucial one, with Kuznetsova committing two unforced errors to squander a 40-15 lead. The pair traded deuces, with the No7 seed following up winners with errors in what seemed like a vicious circle until Safina decided to take matters into her own hands, firing down a forehand then a backhand winner to break and lead 2-1. The match was then over as a contest, and despite a late flurry where she saved two match points, Kuznetsova was powerless to stop the world No1 closing out to win 6-3, 6-2 and take her first title here in Rome, after finishing runner-up to Martina Hingis in 2006.

SAFINA: 'I'M ENJOYING THE CHALLENGE, PROVING THAT I AM BEST'
Having cruised to victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-2 in the final, world No1 Dinara Safina was relishing the prospect of continuing a successful clay court season.

“Yesterday's match really helped me to push myself to play the best,” said Safina of her epic three-hour, three-set win over Venus Williams. “I played one of my best matches. Today I had many more chances to be even more aggressive. I have to be much more dominant, because she had very many points (where all she had to do was) finish them and she was missing by a little bit, so it could have gone either way. So next time - even when somebody's off, I have not to even give them a chance to come into the match. Today she was making way more unforced errors than she usually does. I also played maybe a little bit more - I was trying to get her off the baseline, because she feels very confident on the baseline. But when she had some chances she was really missing today a lot.”

“I'm feeling great, it gives you lots of confidence, especially as the clay court season has started and (I have) one final (in Stuttgart, where she lost to Kuznetsova) and one title. It could not be better. Now I’m going Madrid today and just going to continue playing the same way and keep on going one match at a time.”

“Mentally it was a little bit tougher (against) Venus because I had never beaten her,” said Safina, comparing her semi-final battle with the final. “I was up 3 1 in the third set, then 4 3 break, and it was tougher to finish the match. Against Kuzy today, I had in my head that I had lost three finals this year. I was like ‘I don't want to have this that I'm losing finals’. I'm really happy that I could win the final today. I was disappointed that last week I lost in the final and that I didn't play my best. I'm happy that I broke this and I'm back on schedule, on the main list to go to the Masters.”

Rome represents Safina’s first title since taking over No1 spot in the WTA ranking, and she realises that this will heap more pressure on her shoulders. “When they step on the court they have nothing to lose,” she said of her opponents. “The same happened to me last year - whenever I was playing somebody No1, you just go out there and you swing. I went to play (Justine) Henin last year and I didn't care. I was swinging the ball and everything was landing in. The same is happening with them - they have nothing to lose. But this is a nice challenge, and I'm enjoying this challenge, to prove that I am better than them.”
