Well she won Berlin on Mother's day last year and Rome the day before Mother's day this year so good omen, maybe.

Her using her phone a friend to call Z is always entertaining and amusing. Z is very smart and knows what he is talking about. Plus he is the most quotable coach on tour.

I think Z is becoming more popular (or infamous) than Dina! :p: He's no longer supporting cast :tape: He is one SMART coach and people are hating on that. I don't get why people are getting so pissy about the on court coaching thing when we all know she got to two slam finals without his help and anyway people are always wary when a player drops a coach and becomes 'coachless' it's as if they've lost their direction etc

A lot of people getting bitchy about that are WS fans because the sisters don't use it and state they don't like it  I really see a big thing about it. It's not that a coach can make a player win who is being completely outplayed... I come off a sport where "on court coaching" is allowed and when it's completely not your day it won't help you anyways.
And take Ana as example. She used this Groenefeld (?) guy pretty much during the clay season last year and she still won RG.

And some Kuzzy fans  It's like Vika's semi at Rome. She had her coach on and he said don't get all upset about that line call and she didn't listen to his advice and she gave up on court and lost the match  It's not Dina's fault that she LISTENS to Z and starts hitting winners and being aggressive. Most people are getting a bit too pissy about the 'way he shouts like a fool' at her, umm excuse me have you seen how big Dina is compared to Z? She can EASILY take him on if she wanted to, but thats just it, she won't fire him when she publicly asked HIM to not 'fire' HER. Seriously, don't go all on your feminist high horse and say it's ridiculing Dinara, it's not, she FEEDS off of it. Like I said, can you imagine her with a french coach who's like "okay Dina, if you want you can add some more volleys etc, that would be good right?" She'd hit him on court. Don't be annnoyed at a player using something that is in the WTA rule book, be annoyed at the rule itself and anyway there are LIMITS to how many times you can have your coach on, so you can never say it's excessive when you talk about Dina :(

I don't understand why people are getting worked up about her calling Z. It's in the rules and she can use it if she wants. If their faves don't use it more power to them. It's not as though Z goes out there and chases every ball down, she has to do that. Z can say whatever he wants if she does not listen and follow his advice then him coming out is not really worth much. Plus, I think that Dina calling Z is more about finding some way to calm her nerves than about getting advice because he is usually telling her something that they discussed beforehand. A lot of people in the GM were questioning her ability in Slams when we all know damn well that she is capable of going deep into the Slams without on court coaching. People just need to relax and give her a little more credit for great performances.

I just find it really strange when people chime in and are like oh I'd never allow myself to be shouted at like in front of a huge crowd etc! It's like hello, Dina is a perfectionist she WANTS someone to shout at her and tell her what to do right otherwise she'd do it to herself after she's lost and wallowing in anger in the locker rooms. It must be because once she has Z on there is an IMMEDIATE response to his words. People are also not giving her credit for being so accepting of critiques from her coach and anyway everything he says makes sense! Even when he said to Dina, you're doing the same old shit and it was true! she wasn't being aggressive etc.

i really annoyed about on thing. and that is Dinara herself.
why she needs this treatment so much? Won a set like 6-2 and she immediately call Z. why? why behave like a 5y old silly girl, who can't pee without her mom? why can't THINK w/o anyone? why doubt herself so much?

Because I think these self-doubts are really deep inside of her, maybe as an result of being the little sister of very popular GS winner & No. 1 Marat who made public comments about what she's doing wrong and because until last year it was much up and down. I guess she still needs a lot more victories to get over them.
So much for my short (very profound ) psychological analysis.

I agree with Nina :) The battles Dina faces are ALL mental, it is VERY significant to note that she could only get to the top with the help of a new coach, one that really understands her and has the ability to appease those nasty mental gremlins in her head. She will be indebted to him because this came at a time where she wanted to quit and with his support and guidance she made a complete 360. And remember this is a Safin, and we can't regard tennis players like Dina as normal people with normal socialisation...hello creating friends? :D

There's a whole thread in GM asking whether or not she is out of Marat's shadow...it seems like even if she wins 3 slams she'll still be in his shadow because she lacks world wide charisma and sex appeal :help: You can't please anybody it seems :o

Poor Dina always living in Marat's shadow has probably taken a toll on her. Calling Z is probably for some reassurance that she is indeed doing the right thing than actually needing him on court to tell her what to do. Hopefully someday soon she'll realize that people support her because of who she is not who her brother is.

1) Dina and Z: Sometimes I wonder whether Dina might be calling Z down more for environmental reasons than tactical reasons. She keeps saying she plays better in practice than she does in matches-- so why not make the match seem a little bit more like practice? Complete with your coach being totally hard on you.

I'm really skeptical of the idea that over a three hour match, talking to your coach for a grand total of 9 minutes makes any significant difference in a player's ability to win the match. For one thing, there's a huge factor that's completely out of the player's or her coach's control-- the opponent. Z can tell Dina what to do until he's blue in the face, but if Venus (or whoever) changes tactics completely, Dina's going to have to figure out what to do about that on her own, on the spot. And she has enough proven success in Slams over the last 12 months that it's pretty obvious to me that she can do without him perfectly well if she has to. Just, if she doesn't have to, she doesn't. The option is available to her and she takes it. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I do love how Tennis Channel has caught on that their coaching timeouts are not to be missed, though. The one where he told her she was "shitting the pants" was a particular highlight. And I think he treats her exactly the way she wants to be treated-- that's what some people respond to, hell, as an athlete it's what I responded to. If he was constantly berating her and making her cry or something, it would be different, but he's being hard on her and she's taking it well. She's a big girl and an experienced athlete, she knows what works for her.

2) Dina will never, ever be as popular as Marat. But I think that's okay because I never got the impression that she wants that kind of popularity. So why people think that matters is... I think Dina wants to be respected for her tennis, and the second she stops playing, if all that attention disappeared immediately, I've always been under the impression that she would be perfectly happy with that.

And anyway all the shouting was over when she won the final and went over to hug Z. Aww, they're so dyfunctional, those two :p I don't think Dina wants to be as popular as Marat when she thinks of him as the GOAT and no one is even close to him :o but she wants her tennis to speak for itself as she should.

"shitting the pants" was hilarious. Oh Z don't ever give up your day job

In Rome when she played MJMS who was also a lefty, Z was all "I don't care which hand she plays with, just hit the ball". So her playing another lefty is rather amusing to me. Hopefully she gets to some rest. She looked tired.
