Alexandra is a former Top 10 junior who's been left in the dust as her contemporaries, Victoria, Caroline, Aga and Agnes have made their names on the WTA tour.

Now, Alexandra seems to want to make her own noise. She just lost out on winning her 2nd (and by far biggest) title at the 75K hardcourt in Monzon. She is now within the Top 250 and warrants her own cheering thread! :bounce:

:bigcry: Heartbreaking loss.

But still nothing to worry about, Imo this won't hurt her confidence that bad.. It just shows that she can deliver a very close match at WTA level! And she had the whole crowd against her and that isn't easy. Too bad she couldn't convert the BPs in the last game.

Come back strong next tournament :)

New fan of Alexandra... :) I simply love her intelligent game... And she seems really nice...

I saw all the match against Michelle and it was really well played... Big strokes from both, especially from Michelle but then Alexandra has an excellent capacity of putting the ball where she wants... I also saw her match against Jovanovic and, in that match, she was brilliant... But Jovanovic don't attack so much, letting Alex do her game very well... There is just one thing that I think that Dulgheru needs to improve... She made a lot of amorties to Michelle, some of them goods, but when she tried to do a amortie in a FH, it was completly predictable and the ball passed like 1m above the let :S About her serve, against Michelle, 1st it was really poor but then she started to serve better... In 2nd set especially, almost all her 1st serves were 150 km/h or above... :)

In the end of the match, Alex had really much fair-play and then, when she left the court, public gave a big applause to her... :)

May 21st, 2009, 09:09 AM
By my calculations, she's going to break directly into the Top 150 from No. 201. Currently she is on 283 points; two will drop off this week, leaving her 281; then she will gain 20 for winning through qualifying and a further 120 for reaching the main draw QF, so her total tally should leap up to 421, which this week would place her at World No. 148. If she were to defeat Galina Voskoboeva too, another 80 ranking points would promote her to about No. 133.

What an effort! This could be one of the fastest rises to the Top100 in years, given that she keeps this up and eventually gets there. Being able to fight through matches in qualies against players like Korzeniak is one thing, but to recover and win a tight second set after a qualify opponent like Voskoboeva served for it sings praises to her mental abilities. I am very excited to see how she will do against Hantuchova tomorrow. :)

By defeating Galina today she increased her current ranking points from 283 this week to 501 next and is set to leapfrog the entire 151-200 ranking area and land around World No. 133. If she were to beat Daniela next, her ranking points would more than double in a single week from 283 to 621, and her ranking would jump from No. 201 to about No. 106 in the same period of time.

In view of the long, drawn-out struggle that most players endure to work their ways up from 200 towards 100 (and many never make it that far), she should be the envy of many a player after this tournament. I seem to remember Magdalena Rybarikova enjoying a fast rise from outside the Top 200 into the Top 100 last summer, but it now seems a fair bet that Alexandra will be even quicker, even if victory against Daniela is asking too much from her at this stage in her WTA career.

Does anyone know if Alexandra has ever even qualified for a WTA tour main draw before, at any level? If not, then reaching a semifinal at first attempt is quite remarkable, and all the more so at Premier level.

She lost a couple of tight matches recently (to Yanina Wickmayer and Michelle Larcher de Brito I believe), so it would not be reasonable to expect too much of her at the elite level just yet, but if she can work her way into the Top 100 over the rest of the summer season, hold her own against players in the 51-100 ranking area, and gather some good experience on the WTA Tour, I think she'll be in an increasingly strong position to improve further next year and beyond.

She never qualified for a WTA main draw: 3 attempts in qualifying: Portoroz in sept 2007 (out 1st round), Vina del Mar Feb 2008 (out 1st round) and Estoril a few weeks ago (out 2nd round). What an impressive serie of wins. Totally agree, Hantuchova should be too difficult as of yet. She should get some rest and try to qualify in further clay WTA tournaments in Europe in July and then go to the US for the hard season. Good luck Alexandra!

Totally Incredible! I can't believe this. I watched the match which I had recorded and what impressed me the most was her determination, even when she lost the second set you could see in her eyes that she was still very determined. It's the first time I see her play: apart her mental skills, she has a strong backhand and a great physic. Based on this current week's ranking points, her victory should take her to World No. 81 (up from 283 ranking points this week to 771 next), but of course if the standard for 80th place weakens between this week and next she could sneak into the Top 80 instead.

This week, we find:
Marina Erakovic on 772 points in 80th,
Aravane Rezai on 775 in 79th,
Pauline Parmentier on 780 in 78th,
Edina Gallovits on 779 in 77th, and
Kristina Barrois on 795 in 76th;
nobody else is under 832, and nobody over this level is set to lose enough points to fall to 771.

Of the above, Marina Erakovic was projected to drop two points to 770 and Edina Gallovits 40 points to 739 next week before any additions before tournaments played by them this week. Edina played Warsaw but lost in the first round, guaranteeting that she will fall beneath the threshold, while as far as I can see from ITF records Marina has not played at all this week (but please someone correct me if I'm wrong). This would suggest to me that unless at least two players currently ranked below 771 points are set to rise above that level next week, Alexandra will indeed break into the Top 80 next week. I don't have the time to examine how many might be about to climb above that level just now, but put simply, if there is one she will be No. 80; if none she will be No. 79; if two she will be No. 81, and so on....

Congrats. to Ms. Dulgheru on proving her ability against three Top 50 players this week! She now has twelve months in which to consolidate her position before the majority of her ranking points fall off again.

This is pretty amazing. :) I think Alex has earned herself a really nice rest. Maybe two weeks off. She should feel very proud of herself. She will need a couple of days to take all this in and get used to the fact that she is now a top 100 player.

After a good break Alex can then start preparing for grass and qualifying for Wimbledon. I think Alex has every chance to do well at Wimbledon too. I don't believe her game is a clay only game. She has great net skills, a decent serve, good return, a nice sliced backhand, a great dropshot, and quick reflexes. All these qualities will help her on grass.

Bring on Wimbledon now. :rocker:

I've read an interview of hers after the semi win over Daniela. I'll try to translate it for you guys. It's taken from a Romanian news agency, ProSport :

- Congratulations. Are you satisfied with the game ?
It was better in the semi, the pain wasn't as strong although I had to protect the shoulder because when I force it little discomfort appears.

- You asked for medical intervention in the previous matches...
I came injured, it's actually a recurring injury, but things have gotten worse. The tourney medics have been great and I feel better.

- Did you think you'd be in the final ?
Not really. I actually came here because I couldn't get into RG qualies. I was very disappointed so I thought instead of staying home, to come and play Warsaw and I see it was for the better.

- What happened with RG ?
I was so close to entering there, but I forgot that the points from 25K tourneys get added later to the WTA rankings and when the RG entry list was closed, theoretically I had the points but practically they weren't there. But don't worry, I'll be at Wimbledon ;)

- Were you nervous against Hantuchova ?
A little. I wanted to win but I had no idea how the match would turn out. I was on guard until the last ball because I knew she could always come back. It was incredible to beat her.

- You managed to come back in the second set. From where this strength ?
I think from the psychic (mental).I'm not a girl who gives up easily, I hang on to every ball and I like to fight.

- What did Daniel Dobre bring to your game ?
He improved my strengths, he helped me grow much more, to have a bigger efficiency when serving, he's and extraordinary coach, who knows how to talk to the player and how to get the best in you.

- The victory in the semi brought you around the top 100
It's a very big jump. From 201 where I am now to 100 something means a lot because I won't have to play so many little tourneys to earn points. I want to continually progress but most of it all, I want to play out of pleasure and play at GSs.

- How do you see the final against Bondarenko ?
It'll be a difficult match. I saw on TV the way she plays, she has more experience than me, but I have nothing to lose. It's like a dream from which I never want to wake up. (this is so cute )

- Your parents will be today in the crowd...
It'll be an extraordinary motivation. I have to get over the tiredness and play my best game. I will enter the final to give it all, I'm not satisfied with just being there.

The last answer surely showed us her winner mentality..If you don't believe you can do it, then you'll never do it. But if you keep pushing yourself you'll do just fine ;)

BTW : Since she's not playing RG she will probably return to Romania to take her exams. She's currently a student at the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, International Relations Faculty (I'm at the same Uni but different faculty ;)). The exam period starts Monday so she's gonna struggle for them as well. Not sure if it'll be easier than RG but still a struggle

GSP.ro New victim

No Romanian player has defeated Viktoria Azarenka. Yesterday was Alexandra Dulgheru time to lose before against the belorussian in the first round in New York

In her debut in Grand Slam tournaments for Alexandra Dulgheru the draw was not lucky. First match, first shock encounter against Viktoriia Azarenka, the 9th player in the world and in addition, a Romanian devorateur. No fewer than eight meetings against our players the Belarusian gathered in the past year, no set lost.

The match yesterday was unidirectional. An act which first started abruptly, with the break of Victoria. Soon, the Top 10 player separated thanks to same aggressive game, which characterizes her, always one step ahead on the field. Alexandra tried breaking pace, with short, but only few were successful. Otherwise, the Romanian was almost suffocated by cadence and deployment of the adversary. A short 6.1 occurred on the table after only 29 minutes.

At the beginning of the second, Dulgheru broke the Belorussian's wall, succeeding a break after braver game. She couldn't maintain the advantage. Immediately, Azarenka has matched, then deployed again. The Romanian had a chance to break again. Several points worked well, with completion applauded, or a backhand volley from a jump a la Rios, were the best moments of our girl. Consistency has hung Victoria but more in the final balance of a match that he won at 6-1, 6-1, in one hours and 4 minutes.

Bad loss. Still 3 wins in a row so this must regain her confidence a bit. Losing to Fichman is not really good though, especially after winning the 2nd set TB she should have pulled through.

Anw, back on track, on to Sofia.

Looks like this should be another fine week for Alex. The way Alexandra is playing right now it is only a matter of time before she is top 50, hopefully by the end of the year but if not certainly early next year. :)

She crashed on Jurak 6-2, 6-1!! QF against De los Rios or Zec-Peskiric... I don't know what to think. Given her form, she could beat any of them. She's proven now clearly that she deserves to be top 100 by cruising through these 100k tournaments. Now the future objective must be to get used to play WTA tournaments and win some rounds there. This will be tougher.
