Anna should retire now before embarrassing herself further.
This girl used to ranked #5? so hard to believe.

 because zvonereva and hantuchova should have retired to then when they fell from top 10 right down the rankings, they didn't they worked through it found form and rose back up.

Well they don't play for about 5 or 6 years and now they play twice in a row. Given the way Chak lost in fed cup I'm not too confident.

This is terrible. She's in a total meltdown. Perhaps it's a good idea to play some ITF tournaments, just so she can actually win a match. Although in her current form...

HowardH

I don't think it's a good idea for Anna to step down to lower tournaments when she struggles, because frankly when she's struggling you don't have to be very good to beat her. Plus she would be top seed or something, the pressure would be on her, and anything less than winning the whole tournament wouldn't do that much for her confidence if the players she was facing weren't that good. She somehow needs to find her game though. It's as if she needs to have a different thinking pattern on the court.

I didn't see the match- did any of you? It must have been bad. Flavia has been in poor form this year overall. Admittedly clay is not Anna's favourite surface.

I'm hoping the bottom is actually made of rubber. Very bouncy rubber.

The thing that's really bothering is that Anna didn't get a SINGLE break point on Pennetta's serve in the entire match. Struggling to hold serve is nothing new, but failing to put pressure on Flavia's serve, especially on a slow surface, is just mind-boggling. :help:

Good luck against clay-court specialist AMG in Rome! :tape:

When you are playing as poorly as Anna, there is no good draw

Daszmarelli

She has 5-0 against Anabel (one in clay), and she won her first title defeating Medina Garrigues, in Guangzhou 2006

Davai Anna!

I think the fact no-one has started a new "Rome" thread in Anna's forum indicates how everyone feels about her chances here. If she wins it would be a miracle and possibly only because AMG is tired after playing a lot last week.

I think Goldenlox said it best--when you're playing like this, there is no safe draw.

Not having seen her play in the last year, I have to ask: is her game really that atrocious, or is she simply giving up? The two Pennetta losses recently would seem (from the scorelines) to have been second-set tank-jobs as much as anything. Is she even trying for more than a set?

This year I watched just one match that was at Aussie Open against Jelena Dokic and she played well. But she made a lot double faults :(

Wow, I didn't realise she had a 5-0 record on Anabel. The record is definitely in danger though. Hmm, from the couple of matches I saw, the Aussie open against Jelena Dokic (I also saw some of her match with Anne Keothavong) and then the Fed cup match against Flavia, I don't think her game is really atrocious. It's not bad, it's just... not winning. Her effort level is not low either. Like she's on the court, she's trying, but she's not really doing what it takes to win. Too many errors, and with her game based on placement, she needs to hit many shots in. She has been doublefaulting a bit much, but she hits some good shots too.

I think it's almost as if her mindset, which is so emotional, is causing her to try to hit certain shots not because that is the best shot, but because she feels annoyed or something. It's a bit hard to explain, but I feel it's a bit as if she tries, unintentionally, to use tennis as therapy. Imagine you are practicing, and you hit a really terrible shot, completely framed. You are annoyed, so you don't try on the next shot, you just smack it with no control, hoping to feel better afterwards. Like you're just trying to let some emotions out. Even in practice this isn't that good, your coach will tell you off. Now what Anna does, I feel, is more subtle than that. She doesn't purposely miss or anything. But her emotions definitely affect her, she definitely wants to win the point in a way that will make her feel better, which is giving her an extra task. She has to win, and she also has to win in a way that lets off some steam. Do you remember when Serena was playing Srebotnik in Roland Garros last year, and she had that easy smash at the net? She was so annoyed at the situation that she was in that she purposely smacked the ball extra hard to let off some anger and as a result missed the easy smash.

It's very subtle with Anna, since she generally doesn't smack the ball super hard, but still I feel that something similar to this is happening with her. She wants to do what Serena did, smack the ball really hard and let out some emotion, but in her mind she realises that this is stupid so she stops herself. But somehow this feeling still affects her shot slightly, just enough to make it more inconsistent. It's almost as though when she begins to struggle part of her mind would really like to just let off some steam and whack the shot, but part of her mind wants to play smart tennis. Therefore she can never commit 100% of her mind to playing the shot, she has an internal struggle. That's just my opinion, but I really think that something like this is happening. She could still win against Anabel like this of course, but it makes it harder, and frankly Anabel is hard enough on clay.

HowardH
May 4th, 2009, 05:08 PM
And then to top it all off, Anna is currently crushing Anabel. 6-2 4-2 up, 0-40 on Anabel's serve. She will win now (I think). But then who knows what she will do in the next round? She's so unpredictable. Let's enjoy this upcoming win anyway. Only a few more points to go. I think we'd better create that Rome thread.

Wintermute

Just when even her biggest fans were doubting her. I think we need to change this thread title to Stuttgart/Rome.

Well said. :yeah: Although she's just made a mockery of our discussion. :)

I've wondered (not having TV) if her problem was the same as Hantuchova's circa 2003-2005: too much thinking on the court coupled with too little self-confidence.
