Q. There's so much talk about the Williams sisters being on a different level. You've mentioned you have to step up or step out of the way. Do you think other players should look at what you've done in the last few weeks against them and just stop talking about it and get down to hard work and take you as an example?
CHANDA RUBIN: I wouldn't say they should take me as an example. But I do feel that, you know, talk is just that; it's just talk. They deserve to be where they are. They've gone out and they've beaten people. If they're in the finals against each other, it's because they've beaten everybody along the way to get there.
If you're not going to -- if you have the opportunity to play them and you don't win, you don't stop one or the other from getting there, I think it's pointless to then complain about it. That's just how I see it, how I approach it.

me too!! And I am going to name names: Jennifer Capriati and Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva and the others should take a key from Chanda about how to show some CLASS!!! Not A$$!!!

See, that's why she's my 2nd favorite player in the WTA (Venus and Serena are tied for #1).

nice to see a player who uses her brains instead of talking crap!
Sep 3rd, 2002, 09:42 PM
Well, she's a class-act lady for sure and has always been so. Very smart in her, errrrr, answers, ya know ;)
Sep 3rd, 2002, 09:44 PM
right. Some many other girls on the wtatour are so bratty and self-absorbed. It's not going to kill Martina and Jennifer to say one nice thing about Venus. What's their problem?

Well, I don't know. Chanda has never seemed to be keen on trash-talk, that's just not her style, that's all. She's honest and quite fair, I believe. And she always gives credit to the best players, whether Matina Hingis, ... or Venus and Serena ! :)

They have said nice things about Venus and Serena - so has Amelie (hell, I think a couple of V & S fans have quoted Hingis in their sigs). They've just also put their feet in it a few times.
That said, Chanda's a class act, and always has been. Just ask Brian Stewart or the Cavegirl ;)

Chanda is a very good in interviews from the very start and she is really a class act. I just dont see any point of bashing other players again to praise Chanda.
Chanda alone is a class act. She is actually performing like a top 5 player for the past tournaments she entered.
Chanda is my fave, because she was Lindsay's bestfriend in juniors. I hope she can still bouncedback to the ranking.

Do you think Lindsay will have a chance against Serena? I picked Linsay before the tourney to beat Serena but not sure now. Serena has not lost more than 1 game in any set her last few matcfhes.

I have noticed that the top players who actually acknowledge Venus and Serena (like the Monica seles, Kim clijsters, and chanda rubin) are the ones who have actually played the williams sisters tough.
However, the ones who are more vindicative and talk trash (Jennifer cap, justine and Amelie), are the ones who have not scored some success against the williams sisters.
Maybe if they concentrate on their games and stop thinking about how female tennis is so boring because venus and serena are dominating, they can finally be successful against the william sisters.

You got to love somebody who only worries about her game and not what others are doing! I think it is the key to her success. :)

gweeny, you might be right. I kind of hope Amelie beats Jennifer but then again I want to see Venus get Jennifer too.

Go Venus and Serena, best of luck to Chanda :) . I like her interview

Chanda has ALWAYS been a voice of reason, graciousness, and intelligence in the WTA, and is one of most mature, skilled, honest, and insightful players in all of tennis. If all those infantile posters who constantly whine about "finesse" want to experience it in verbal form they seriously need to read and reflect on Chanda's eloquent remarks in her interview. As Chanda says: It's about time the other players in the WTA shut up, put up, and learn how to win the way Venus and Serena have. In other words: Be strong WOMEN for once, not scared, bitter little girls...

She is a classy woman... :D

I love Chanda...she's a woman of substance!!!!

Preach on, Chanda!
From today's NY Times:
Instead of complaining about Williams-sisters fatigue, instead of resigning themselves to defeat before they play Venus or Serena, some players could learn how to confront their fears by applying Rubin's aggressive strategy.
"I wouldn't say they should take me as an example, but I do feel that talk is just that; it's talk," said Rubin, who went to the net 32 times. "They deserve to be where they are. They've gone out and they've beaten people. If they're in the finals against each other, it's because they've beaten everybody along the way to get there. If you have the opportunity to play them and you don't win, you don't stop one or the other from getting there, I think it's pointless to then complain about it. That's how I see it, how I approach it.
"I think it's pretty sad if you step out on the court and you don't feel you can beat the opponent. Then why go out there? Why train and try to get better if you don't feel that it's going to have some benefit when you get into the actual matches? That's just my mentality going out there."
