just check the ranks and see if they are in like i said

Q list is in 3 weeks time, so players outside maindraw cutoff will have to decide if they wanna play Q or not.

most players below 55 or so have no chance to play here.

WC will not be exclusively for Spanish, the tourney is property of Ion Tiriac and in ATP event he has given some WC to Romanian or other players. Last year Juan Carlos Ferrero was denied a WC that went to Safin (his protegee) and an Italian player (in exchange of a WC for Safin in Rome).

How do you manage to give byes to semi-finalists if those are not seeded automatically? You cannot predict where those players end in the draw for Madrid? So if they´re drawn out of the pot, automatically there´s a bye following and if they´re drawn as the opponent for someone they´re drawn to the next free spot in the draw and a bye follows?!

TheBoiledEgg

You are right. In previous years QFs were on Friday; this year they have changed it to Thursday (Saturday WTA final). I have no argument with that. Sheesh, waddaya want? The original question was is Sabine in the Madrid main draw, and the answer was no. Then you said:

"If Lisicki reaches the quarterfinal in Estoril, she couldn't play the qualifying in Madrid."

Which is not true, since the Estoril QFs are on Thursday, and Madrid qualifying starts on Friday.

I was only pointing out that it is physically possible for a player to lose in one city, and make a qualifying match in another city on the same day, and it has been done before.

Nobody would do that, but often they would postpone her match if they have to, so if she loses the semifinal she can fly to Rome that night and play two matches the next day. They do that all the time.

You are right that they might postpone the match so she could play two qually rounds in one day (although this seems unfair to her 1st round opponent, who if she wins, has to play twice in one day against an opponent who has had a night's rest).

However, although I cannot cite a specific example off the top of my head (and am not going to spend a lot of time looking one up), I know that players have at times played two matches in two cities in one day, when the cities are not too far apart.

My guess: no (therefore she has a better chance of getting it).

More likely candidates would seem to be Francesca Schiavone (if there are no more withdrawals), who is next in and a European clay courter, Sabine Lisicki, who is European and by far the highest ranked and upwardly mobile player not yet in the draw, or some young Spaniard.

More likely candidates would seem to be Francesca Schiavone (if there are no more withdrawals), who is next in and a European clay courter, Sabine Lisicki, who is European and by far the highest ranked and upwardly mobile player not yet in the draw, or some young Spaniard.

Hopefully Parra Sanontja will get the fifth wild card :)
She won't be able to play the qualy, coz she's still at Bucharest, so hopefully the organizers will give it to her.

Umm why would Howler get a wildcard when she already withdrew :tape:?

If anything, it would be a last minute withdrawal to sell tickets, but not a last minute entry.

According to the official webpage of the tournament, Silvia has a WC for the MD. They don't mention Lourdes coz her rank is high enough to make the qualys, so no way she will get a WC for the MD.

Official main draw wild cards are:
Maria José Martinez Sanchez
Vivi Ruano
Nuria LLagostera
Silvia Soler
(still 1 remaining)

Wild cards for Q are still unknown

The q draw is up here (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/Pdfs/events/2009/madrid_draws.pdf).

It says Monica Niculescu has been moved to the main draw. Diatchenko replaced her in the q draw.

Sabine is not in the Q draw. Apparently her right shoulder strain, and possibly a need for rest, caused her to withdraw.

TBE (or others who know): Who withdrew to make room for Monica in the main draw?

The way Monica has been playing lately it would probably have been better for her to play the qualies.

Oh no!! :sobbing:

Do you know the reason? :sobbing:
Ana's malady is right knee inflammation.

Official website story: (http://www.anaivanovic.com/?path=start/news&detailpage=1530)

Ana has been forced to withdraw from the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, a $4.5m Premier Mandatory event which begins tomorrow, because of injury. The 21-year-old is suffering from inflammation in her right knee and doctors have ordered her not to play competitively for one week.

“I’m so disappointed to be missing Madrid,” said Ana, who owns a holiday home in Mallorca and has been learning Spanish. “When I saw the 2009 calendar this was one of the events that I was most looking forward to, because I love Spain.

“I visited the Caja Magica two years ago during the Sony Ericsson Championships and it looked like a beautiful stadium. I’m very sad that I won’t be there, and I’m sorry for my supporters too.

“My knee has been bothering me since the Fed Cup a couple of weeks ago. It’s become more painful with each match so I decided to go and see a specialist in Munich.

“Unfortunately he and his staff told me that I need to take a break from playing matches, although I must work hard on my recovery during the next week. It’s very frustrating because I feel that my overall fitness is at its peak, and I have been practising very well.

“At the moment there is no danger of me missing Paris: my focus is now on Roland Garros.”

According to new Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rules, Ana must visit the Madrid area at some point in the next 51 weeks and perform promotional activities to avoid a fine and suspension. She will also forsake up to $250,000 in Bonus Pool payments.

The French Open, at which Ana is the defending champion, begins on Sunday 24 May.
