In her doubles match, everychance she got she was going for the kill at Granville or Hopkins. I felt bad for the two, and once or twice she connected with them. I can't say I agree with the approach if previous hostility has not been established. Even then, the reason should be good. Sure she racked up the winners and had them scared, but my common beliefs rule against Anna on this one.:(
But, she played very aggressively, poached on a consistant basis successfully, and really let it rip.:bounce:

The crowd, large population of men with little to no knowledge of tennis I'm sure really egged Anna on with their excitement and hollers of encouragement

That's a valid play. I think players should do it more often and it has nothing to do with gamesmanship or how they feel about each other - it's about tennis strategy. I don't remember the outcry when Serena hit Anna with the ball or the times Serena hit the ball as hard as she could right at Anna's head.

Er, yeah I think they was an outcry and I say "THERE'S NO CRYING IN TENNIS". Sometimes one can't control the reflex, so if one get's hit upside the head, then move on and play the next point. Hell the person who got hit upside the head, should aim for their opponents stomache or head as well.;):):)
Note: Laura may get revenge though on Anna, I can see her coming back and winning a match if they chose to play. But that is the brakes I guess...:)
Anyway, I am not saying they should aim all the time at one's head, but it is a legal play in tennis. Just aimed 50% of the time.:)

This may be coming from a biased point of view, but I don't think Anna aimed for her opponent.
Sure, she played aggressively, and tried to slam the ball across the net, but it was nothing different to what other playes usually do.
It was completely different from the time Nagyova/Tulyaganova(I think) kept lining up Martina on purpose:fiery:, and the time Raymond/Stubbs lined up both Anna and Martina on purpose:fiery:.

They only got hit once and funny enough, that was by Martina, plus in doubles it is expected that you might cop a hit from time to time, but there is nothing wrong with being aggressive in doubles, now only if she did that in singles, then I am sure we would be seeing a better singles player on the court..

Megan, I really didn't notice that. But I noticed how great Anna played! :D Anna did go at them a couple of times. But I thought she went low. But my vision is probably not as good as yours!
I don't think either girl was upset with Anna. There were normal handshakes after the match. Anna was aggresive and played great!
And Megan, I'm sure you are an imposing sight in women's doubles. Especially when you play aggressively!
If they wanted to, Granville and Hopkins could have tried to hit Anna. But I don't think they were upset with her.

That is how the game of doubles is played. You are taught to ALWAYS hit at your opponents feet .But sometime it is hard to control the direction of the ball, since you really should be looking at the ball, not where the ball is going.:)
But as a doubles player, you are also taught to back up when you see your opponents with their racket up,ready to hit an overhead. If you don't back up,it is your fault you get hit.:o
It is also your partners job to let you know if their lob is going to be short, that way you are backing up way before your opponent hits an overhead in your direction.
And keeping the ball low over the net will keep your partner at net, safe from those high put-away balls!:D

Laura Golarsa(fmr quarterfinalist in Wimby...she lost by Evert in a close match in '89,if I don't mistake) remembers always in tv(she's reporter for an Italian pay tv) the lack of sportmanship by Kournikova during a doubles match played together...she hit 2-3 times her double partner without saying "excuse me" or something of similar...I don't know if this fact is really happened...but sure this is another proof not all players(to use an euphemism) love Anna...

Daniela hit her in the face at the Oz. Anna still won because she is better.:p
Sep 3rd, 2002, 03:25 PM
I remember that, too, Megan. But Daniela's shot hit the court first, and then bounced up into Anna's face. She didn't try to hit Anna in the face. Daniela is delicate and a lady, afterall! ;) She wouldn't do that! :D

Yeah! I guess that win had nothing at all to do with Martina Hingis! ;)
