A) The Williams sisters going 1 and 2, playing each other in blockbuster Grand Slam finals
B) Kim Clijsters (or another retired champ) returning and turning back the clock
C) A new emerging superstar (Michelle Larcher de Brito etc) makes a big breakthrough
D) Maria Sharapova returns to the WTA
E) Jelena Jankovic is banned from having the trainer on court
F) Other?

Option A! We need a big rivalry!

I went with Maria returning. Slightly biased, but face it, she is the main draw. My friends know of no other tennis players (not even Ivanovic) except for maybe the Williams Sisters.

A. It won't be good because they know eachother so well that they don't play good matches.
B. It will be really good for WTA. She is big name in tennis and people loved and still love her. With this kind of level in WTA she will be top ten in 6 months.
C. We need new stars - de Brito and Robson. First de Brito has to learn how to serve. ;)
D. No doubt WTA needs Masha. Her matches with Williams will be big show in every event. There will extra trick when she will return because her ranking will be low and it will be when Clijsters, Henin and Serena came back. Some top players will have to play with her in the first or second round.
E.Jankovic's coach doesn't change the level of WTA :p
F. Dementieva and Petrova and other boring Russian has a pause for a year.

Big rivalry doesn't mean better level of play. :tape:

I'm sorry, but Serena and Venus' matches have almost always been very underwhelming. It's got the potential to be a great rivalry, but it just doesn't eventuate.

The best things that could happen to the tour right now?

Serena, Venus, Kimmie and Sharapova form the WTA's Big 4. Meanwhile, the likes of Ivanovic, Golovin, Wozniacki, Azarenka and Vaidisova get sorted and develop into consistent TOP 20 players, with the potential to win slams/be part of the next "big 4" in the next few years. The likes of Dokic, Mauresmo & Hantuchova all back in the TOP 15. Jankovic out of TOP 10.

A) The Williams sisters going 1 and 2, playing each other in blockbuster Grand Slam finals - boring
B) Kim Clijsters (or another retired champ) returning and turning back the clock - Kim wasn't the great anyway and any other greats would be too old by now. Unless its Henin.
C) A new emerging superstar (Michelle Larcher de Brito etc) makes a big breakthrough - This would be great but not necessarily the screecher. As a Brit I would much prefer it be Robson but if both of them could emerge as slam winner while in their teens I can only see that being a good thing for the sport. They both seem liken they would be very marketable girls as well which wouldn't hurt the profile of the sport either.
D) Maria Sharapova returns to the WTA - Of course that would be great for the WTA but only if she came back in top form and stayed in top form.
E) Jelena Jankovic is banned from having the trainer on court - Nah that gives me a laugh during the boring matches.
F) Other? - Rivarlies.

Dementieva going on a tear, winning all three slams, becoming number one growing back her bangs, and, with her finally getting the attention from the mainstream press she deserves, the rest of the world will inevitably become besotted by her incomparable beauty and charm.

less mental midgets, more fighters with champion mentality.

less slumps , less brainless ball bashing (we are starting to get some of that) and more rivalry

How about A. If not A, then B will suffice. I'd like to see Kim, Linds, or JH (only to be obliterated) return.

The top players stepping up and winning the big tournaments, regardless of if they're Serena, Venus, Ana, Vera, or Elena.

Oh. They all...have won the big tournaments. Never mind! Carry on.

That will kill WTA. She is playing all the time and it doesn't help tour at all. :tape:

2004 was one of the worst season in the history, now we have the same story, sorry but Dementieva isn't a person, who can help WTA

Look at the FO for the men. There's no reason to watch.
Not only do you know who's going to win, you know no one else in the top 5 is even going to try to give him a match.
If Nadal has a close match, it will be an early rounder against a clay courter who is just wailing away.

The women's FO is wide open. That makes it much more interesting.
The only problem with the wide openness is that there's no consistency.
Serena has made one final in over 6 months.
Dinara has been erratic since the Olympics. Jelena also erratic this year. Elena just went out early at IW
No one is both good and consistent since Justine retired

Venus/Serena playing major finals consistently just like they did from the French Open 2002 to Wimbledon 2003(with 2003 French Open being the exception).

Serena has been very consistent, especially given how much she's played. I don't think you have to make it to the finals of every event to be considered a consistent player.

I do think the FO will be much more interesting on the women's side. As Nadal sails his way to another victory, I doubt we'll hear murmurings of how "pathetic" and horrible the men's game is

The WTA needs a lot more than one thing. However, the FIRST best thing would be more competitive slam finals. That's the biggest audience. That's where you get your best odds of turning the casual fan into a passionate one.

The last TEN women's slam finals have been straight set wins.

I think a new star (preferably more than one) that can regularly challenge all the top players would good, maybe not have one particular person dominate everything but definitely be able to actually challenge say Serena on a regular basis so that we stop getting blow out finals.

Fixing the mental weaknesses of a lot of players would help but I doubt that's possible in some cases. I just want proper, well contested, beautifully played matches, more winners, less error-fests, more variety in shot making & tactics & not just blasting the ball as hard as possible until the opponent makes a mistake. Not too much to ask for really!
