I missed the part with the bump.:(

That's old stuff, we gotta look forward instead. Venus is the best in the world and Spirlea is almost forgotten. So in the end she's the winner even if Spirlea had something against her skin colour

Funny I thought it was Richard who had something against Spirlea's skin colour :cough:

I'd never seen that match before. Seeing the pure joy from Venus at the end just about made me cry :) That is the best part of sports :)

No matter, I still wanted to see that part. It was a classic part of a classic match. I enjoyed it immensely. How about Venus' reaction when she won? Pure joy.:D

Spirlea had that match in her hands with 2 match points but Venus winning reaction was classic.

Nasty Nick, I don't think Spirlea is racist. The bump happened because Venus didn't show respect since she was younger. The racist one was daddy Richard who called Irina a white turkey..lol

Venus has matured tons...In that match she was very bratty and immature...

Good luck Venus at the Us Open 02'

I never saw this match, thanks CBS.:) The crowd was actually on Venus's side. But what really made me smile was how Venus cried at the end of that match. She was estatic with joy. I finally saw how she reacted when she made her first slam final.:):)

Also, When I was watching I kept thinking to myself, "why is the world are people thinking that Venus would never win slams or even become #1 in the world"? One could CLEARLY see her potential.

why are you suprised the crowd was in favor of Venus? It's NY for heaven's sake. Irina is European and just defeated crowd favorite M. Seles.

I think Irina was responsible for the bump. She was known as one of the biggest b&tches on court... ok, let's say feisty. I don't think it was racist, though, she was just putting out her bad-ass Romanian attitude.

nysaga, have you been watching tennis?

Er.. I don't have the time to give you examples of the err.. underdog aka another player from another country being cheered on, in America, while V@S play who are American.

wake up nysaga. Pilot Pen. Venus beat Daniela, people cheered for Daniela. Pam Shriver kept saying over and over how the crowd cheers for the underdog. oh lordy:)

calm down child..lol Remember this was 1997, not 2002. Venus IS the underdog in this match. Underdog + american = cheers ;)

Omg, I am refering to the crowd, I liked how the NY crowd cheered on Venus. Of course she wasn't a HUGE threat then either.

Nysaga you mention players and their nationalities, and I am tellin you that many times V@S get booed while they play another opponent from another country. Hell the same country even. Jen has been ranked higher then Venus and Venus still gets booed and Venus who is CLEARLY the underdog gets cheered.

My god watch a V@S match.:)

Very entertaining match..had never seen it before including the infamous "bump" which was hard to tell who bumped who...but I'd say it was Spirlea who had a malicious smile most of the match. I assume Martina won the Open the next day but can anybody give me the scores of the match?? Thanks!

6-0 6-4 I believe was the scoreline Martina won the finals by...

Well Irina also made fun of Monica's grunt DURING that match. After Irina would hit a hard shot she would grunt loudly to let Monica know she can grunt too and then start laughing.

Irina also gave the Ashe crowd her middle finger after she lost that first tiebreaker.

I have this whole match on tape and it is one of my alltime favs!!

I enjoyed that match immensely. I remember seeing back in '97 too at a sports bar yelling at the top of my lungs for Venus. That backhand down the line down match point was wonderful. In this match however, Venus's forehand sucked big time. It was horrible. Shows how far she's come....Go Venus! :bounce:

oh and the interview with Venus after the match was SO funny! Venus said "I'm superstoked! I get to play on day 14!"
http://www.venustennis.com/us975.jpg
And venus said of the "bump" that Irina was not looking where she was going and Venus looked away and then when they both looked back it was too late.

Of course Irina said Venus "thinks she's the f#ck!ng Venus Williams."

What ever happend to Irina? She looked like she had a great forehand and serve. Anyway, she did seem like a total TOTAL brat. I really am amazed at how far Venus came. She hit with some serious topspin back then, and now hits a little flatter (but still has some of the most heavy topspin shots in the top ten IMHO). She can actually get the forehand IN the court now, and hits a LOT harder. She even serves harder. Finally, I think she moves better as well. (It could just be the bad camera angles or that Irina really does serve harder and hit forehands better than Venus)

I watched that match like I didn't already know the outcome.

I was actually cheering all over again.

I remember how mad I was at the time. Spirlea was an evil thing ((that grin was demonic).

I kinda wish there were a few Spirlea's on the tour right now.

I was just glad Little Venus didn't go into a shell, instead she rose up and won.

That look of joy and the jumping up and down. Priceless.

Also I owe Serena a big apology because back then, I thought "Poor Venus, having to lug around that little stubby sister of hers where ever she went."

You could see in the crowd reactions how fired up Serena was during the match.

Also a black woman on the other side of Mom, in the family box, had Barbie blond hair, I guess Serena got the inspiration from her.

I loved that they showed that match.

Glad it rained (also allowed me to get 3 sets in this morning and miss nothing on TV).

Venus' reaction to winning was beautiful. Raw. Genuine. It still gives me chills. :D

P.S. The bump would be the beginning of the end for the talented Romanian. Lol@Mary Carillo who seemed to be doing everything humanly possible to maintain her composure because to me it sounded like Mary wanted to go off on Spirlea for the bump.

I'll always remember this match for:

1. The bump
2. Venus' post-match celebrations (jumping up and down at the net)

:)

The bump was so clearly intentional on the part of Spirlea it's hilarious. she was WHISTLING, ya know, the whistling that means

I'm-going-to-do-something-but-pretned-I-didn't-mean-to whistling. She didn't look surprised, etc after it, and when she say down she looked at the crows(her coach I'm assuming) and smirked before wiping her face.

The match was great though. I'm surprised at how good Spirlea was, her forehand was killer, and her slice backhand was good dtl as well. Venus' reaction to winning was awesome, she looked like someone had given her a bazillion dollars or something. Priceless.:) Too bad they didn't show the final:(

nobody wants to see where Venus lost to Hingis badly. :( Of course after the match Venus said of Hingis: "She played a little bit better than I did." Venus got bageled in set one and picked it up some in set two and broke Hingis I think to get to 4 all but then too many errors from Venus and Hingis was really mixing it up and out thinking Venus. As Mary Carrilo would say, "Venus was not really Venus back then."

And today's Hingis is not the Hingis of 1997. :(
