Sam has an easily winnable first round match up...

(27) Sybille Bammer AUT vs bye
Sofia Arvidsson SWE vs Samantha Stosur AUS
Mathilde Johansson FRA vs (WC) Sania Mirza IND
(2) Dinara Safina RUS vs bye

She has a chance to beat Bammer (who withdrew from IW with a shoulder injury)... and then she can take it to Dinara!!! HOPEFULLY

Great chance for Sam to win her 1r I must agree :) I wouldn't underestimate Bammer though she can make life difficult for Sam with the game she has. Hopefully they won't be any choking this week from Sam...one does hope.

Smash em Sam :yeah:

I am worried about Bammer, she was obviously playing decently last week. Not sure how serious her injury was...

It would be good for Sam to get a crack at Safina, if she keeps getting to stages in tournaments where she is playing agaisnt the best in the world, it can only be a good thing. She just needs that one big win...

Go Sammy:)!

Mar 24th, 2009, 08:43 AM
Its a pretty good draw, she can get the first two matches, but then its Safina...One step at at time though.

I'm not a huge Stosur fan, I think this is the first time I've come into her forum actually. :o But I saw the title of this thread from the Aus & NZ main forum and made up a song from the words "Sammy in Miami" and begun to sing it. Slow day...

So I wish her good luck in Miami, because she really has a chance to make that match against Safina. First things first, she really should beat Arvidsson quite handily. :)

Wow, I expected her to win...but what a way to win :)

Hopefully it is a confidence booster for her next big match agaisnt Dinara. PLEASE WIN!

No hopes this time, I am expecting a choke or something so I don't think it will bother me that much anymore. I just hope she gets herself in a good position to take a set or the match just so she can prove to herself once again that she can compete with the best.

Small realitity check, however...will be difficult for her to back up after such a big win. Not saying she can't do it, but Mauresmo is finding form again, and it would be normal for Sam to have a little lull.

However, this is a huge win for her and I am very happy considering the circumstances (her 25th bday tomorrow)

Beachley inspires Stosur to Miami upset
AAP - March 30, 2009, 1:34 pm
Advice from Layne Beachley (R) has fuelled Samantha Stosur's belief that she can beat the best. AAP ©

Australian tennis ace Samantha Stosur paid tribute to seven-times world surfing champion Layne Beachley after sweeping to the biggest win of her career in Miami on Monday.

Stosur crushed world No.2 Dinara Safina 6-1 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open, a $A6.5 million event regarded as the sport's "fifth slam".

The watershed victory followed up painful near-misses this season against world No.1 Serena Williams - when the Queenslander squandered four match points in Sydney - and fellow top-tenners Elena Dementieva and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Those narrow defeats and some sage advice from Beachley have fuelled Stosur's belief that she can beat the world's best.

"Layne came with me to Dubai (last month) and she helped me out a ton that week and we're still in contact a lot," Stosur told AAP from Miami.

"She got in my head a little bit and we spoke about a lot of things. Obviously she's been through heaps in her career and knows how to handle pressure very well.

"So we hung out a lot there and had a good time and I learnt a lot and I'm still trying to carry on that information of what she was able to give me there with every match going forward."

Beachley taught Stosur to "stay in the moment" rather than get ahead of herself in matches.

"It's pretty easy when you get nervous or get tight to start rushing and, before you know it, you don't even know what you're thinking or doing," Stosur said.

"So a lot of it is about just staying calm and making sure you're breathing and sticking to what you do best."

A three-times grand slam doubles champion, Stosur has long threatened to claim a major singles scalp.

"So it was nice to finally get it under my belt, that's for sure," she said after setting up a showdown with former world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo for a quarter-finals berth.

"It's just been the progression of everything that I've been doing for the last year and now it's coming together.

"I've played some really good matches all year and been really close and I knew it was going to happen.

"It was just a matter of getting myself over the line and I think it's just a bit of self-belief and just doing it really.

"Over time, I think you just eventually get it. Once you go through enough close losses, then eventually you're going to get sick of it basically.

"You remember what it feels like to lose and you just don't want it to happen again."

Stosur, who celebrates her 25th birthday on Tuesday, lost her first five encounters with Mauresmo - but did knock the Frenchwoman over the last time they met, two years ago on clay in Rome.

"So that's something good for me to put in the memory bank," Stosur said.

A repeat success would thrust Stosur to the cusp of the world's top 30, and within striking distance of her career-high No.27 ranking of two years ago - before she was struck down with a career-stalling viral infection.

"Wins like today are going to get me there," Stosur said.

"But it's not over yet. I've got to come back tomorrow and try to back it up.

"Now I have done it once, I've got to take it with me and remember what it feels like and how I handled it and really try to keep improving on it and do it over and over and over again."

I saw the last few games of it, Sam had no idea or gameplan whatsoever. Any confidence from the last few days has been taken away really. Her serve was getting killed (mainly because she missed a lot of 1st serves). It's a horrible matchup from Sam but that could of been done better.
