Kim Clijsters will most likely return to the WTA, She's holding a press conference to reveal her plans in tennis. Although It's not sure whether she'll return or not, many insiders are saying that she will.

Press conference will be this thursday afternoon in Bree.

http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/953/Tennis/article/detail/788467/2009/03/23/Kondigt-Kim-Clijsters-donderdag-comeback-aan-.dhtml

Translation ;

Will Kim Clijsters make a comeback? That rumor has been going round for weeks now, but until present hasn't been confirmed nor denied. Thursday afternoon that will change, cause Clijsters will convene the press in Bree. The Limburgian will officialy present her 2009 Schedule

Exhibitionmatches

Clijsters has been training for weeks on a regular basis, en will certainly play a few matches this year. Her first appearance is on sunday 17 may at Wimbledon. Where she'll be playing a singles match against her former Idol Steffi Graf, and after that she will also play doubles along with Tim Henman against Graf/Agassi. Next off, she will play an exhibitionmatch on 14 June at the WTA-tournament in Rosmalen against Michaëlla Krajicek. In July she will also play 2 exhibitionmatches in the American WTT Pro League, where Clijsters will defend the colors for the Saint Louis Aces. In December an exhibition match will folow in Antwerpen.

Davenport

In the environment of Clijsters there has been speculations going on that she's thinking of a comeback, but officialy nobody wanted to admit it. The rumors were even more confirmed after the relevations of Lindsay Davenport. The American told on television that she thought that Clijsters next to her exhibitionmatches also would play WTA tournaments. The 32 yo Davenport, who after the birth of her oun, also made a comeback, and now is pregnant again, mentioned that Clijsters sent an e-mail on how she combined WTA tennis with her son.

I read an article today that relies on good sources that Clijsters looks very fit, just like when she played the tour, and that she will surely make the comeback. It also says that Clijsters wants to enter this year's US Open!! Sounds great, doesn't it? :)

Part of an article, translated:

Clijsters having contact with US Open

Will Kim Clijsters make a comeback? Rumors that she will are circling around for a couple of weeks now, but weren’t denied nor confirmed. According to the news on VTM, Clijsters would announce she will attend the US Open in September, Thursday afternoon.

Speaks person of the US Open Chris Widmayer confirms there have been contacts with the former world #1. Furthermore, Clijsters would have gotten a wild card for Wimbledon. Expectations are that Clijsters will officially announce her program for 2009.

OMG, a wildcard for Wimbly!!!!!!!!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Kim Clijsters has officialy returned to the WTATOUR, she will start in cincinnati and then Toronto to conclude with the US OPEN. If everything goes right, she might add tournaments in 2009 and go further in 2010 (full schedule).

She has been training for 12 weeks now, 6 days a week, with a professional schedule and trainers. She got her passion back after the 5th week of training and has never felt so driven before.

Besides that she also looks well trained and sweet as usual.

Yep + it's in Belgium! ;) And 'cause she wanted to take out of ranking when she retired 2007 she can't use her SR then and has to request for a Wildcard. And already did then obviously! ;)

I know what you mean about her climbing up the ramkings so fast in 2005. But she didn't actually reach #1 in 2005 although everyone regarded her as the real #1 after she won the USO and dominated the hard courts in the US that year. She actually belatedly got the #1 early in 2006 by which time it was universally reckoned that Amelie now was the true #1.

I hope it's true that would totally rock my socks!!! She was my favorite number two and with Serena playing a limited schedule it would be nice to have someone else to support. There was always something about her that I really liked. And I hated how she left with so much unfinished business.

Now we can see her renew her rivalries with Sharapova (4-3), Venus (4-6), and Mauresmo (8-7). She can also now get a chance to even out the H2H against Shuai Peng and Jill Craybass...lol

Now that my hopes are up I'm going to be disappointed if she's not making a comeback.

There was a link I posted in another thread: apparently KIm has been training over 20 hours a week. Pretty serious stuff.

Plus I was watching an old Kim match - I think it was Kim vs Venus 2005 US open. Even in 2005 Kim apparently told Tracy Austin it wasn't out of the question that she might come back after she had started the family. I guess the death of Leo might have spurred her back into sport? That's what I would guess if she does come back - and it's till an if.

O, I hadn't thought about this possibility that an official anouncement could mean an elaboration on a big exhibition   Would be weird. Also, it's already been officially confirmed Antwerp will be hold in December and Kim will attend.
Why wouldn't Bob hold the press conference about Antwerp himself?

Yes, but Kim may want to end the "comeback" rumors. The only way to do so would be to appear in person to clarify things. ;) Of course, I am not saying I don't want her to come back - I love her to death. :hearts: I'm just trying to think realistically. That being said, I think there is also a possibility of Kim contemplating a comeback. I think there is the chance of a Kim comeback, but if she does announce it, it won't be right away. She's doing the exhibitons to help test herself to really determine whether she wants to return. If there is an announcement, it will be much later this year, I'd guess.

the WTA must be in a seriously bad way if this one slam wonder who gave a huge middle finger to her fans by curtailing her "farewell tour" is being fawned over. Remember when she kept insisting she'd rather be doing dishes and changing diapers? I guess that wasn't as exciting as playing tennis in front of thousands of live spectators. But that's the new WTA and it's "all about me" mentality.

And if the previous poster thinks Pierce, Hingis and Clijsters can save the WTA, then the situation is truly dire.

:spit:

I hated on Kim a bit too when she showed up to the 2005 YEC complaining of fatigue and burnout after playing waaaaay too many meaningless fall tournaments. I could already see that she no longer cared about being a champion, just a few months after lifting her first Grand Slam trophy. It shocked me, and I turned against her because I was so disappointed.

Any possible hating on Kim Clijsters' comeback that I could do died the day someone in GM suggested there might actually be an all-Radwanska final at a Tier I event. :scared:

My thoughts exactly. I would have been happy to see her go sooner than the end of 2007, the way she was playing back then. But now is now and I will be happy to cheer Kim on again if she comes back with 100% commitment. My only concern is that this comeback (if that's what it is) is a reaction in grief to her father's death and may be short lived. But I'm always negative, so hopefully I'm wrong! :D

That would be the best tennis-news I've heard in a long time. Tennis has been nothing but a bore lately and I really do think she'll accomodate quite easily to the 'new' tour. Anything barely changed since she left.

There is one downside to a possible comeback of Kim: that we will once again have to cope with these negative messages from someone who pretends to be a fan, but is actually an antifan.
Can you look into Kim's head? I don't think so. You are in no position to make a judgement about her commitment.

She could very well be Top 10 given enough time.

I haven't seen her perform in exo matches recently, but I'd bet the farm that she could get back into the top 10 in less than 2 years. I know that sounds like a long time, but if she were to settle into a regular tour schedule, then I don't think it would take much longer after that 1st year returning to be a serious threat.

Whether she can slam again is a more open question. Still, imagine a Safina vs Clijsters FO final in 2011.:drool::drool:

Is it me or is everyone expecting her to comeback and start winning slams again, she struggled to do so at her prime, think it will be any easier now?
It would be wonderful to see her back but to make the assumption that she will automatically pick up where she left off is a little soft. To even suggest she wll be better than the serbs/the new breed does ot even seem realistic to me.
Hingis made a comeback, it was great but no where near her former self!
Daven[port did the same and her results were no where near where she left off
The only realistc person who can come back now and get back is probably Justine and that is because she has not been gone that long anyway!

Leave the option for a comeback open, but don't confirm it yet.
Of course I will be thrilled if she does decide to confirm the comeback on thursday!

That said, I also read an article stating that it was Kim's father who apparantly wished her to come back to the tour. It would have been his last wish... according to that article.
I have my doubts about this source though. Although I think it is likely that Kim knew her father was ill when she decided to cut her retirement tour short to be able spend his last moments on earth with him. And maybe her father told her to pick up where she left of?
I don't know, just speculating, but the article got me thinking.

Anyway it also states that she is fitter than ever at the moment (which I also think is a bit weird, but I guess it is possible since rumours go she has been training like mad) and that she would maybe enter US Open.

If she comes back this is one of the typical examples of what Dinara spoke about in her latest interview. i'd say kim has a better shot than they do because kim was two of them combined:

lindsay: powerful shots but couldn't move therefore had no defense which has come more critical

hingis: couldn't hit the powerful shots to end points which in today's game is critical

so, only in this context, kim has both of what they lacked, in that she has good defense (i'm not gonna say great since she has been off for a while) and she is powerful when on the attack...

I think that makes sense, we know Kim Clijsters loved her father and tennis so much, and they both shared all their time there, so it might have been a good way for her to deal with the death and create happy memories to replace a deep loss? It's what Justine got herself driven in tennis..

Indeed, I think it can be a really strong motivation for her (something some people claimed she lacked in her 'first' career)
I can already see her falling to her knees when she wins her second grand slam (dreaming) and dedicating her victory to her beloved father.
It was indeed also part of Justine's strength.

WASHINGTON -- Former No. 1-ranked tennis player Kim Clijsters asked the U.S. Open about receiving a wild card for this year's tournament as part of her comeback plans, The Associated Press learned Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Clijsters, who retired in 2007 and gave birth to a child last year, will hold a news conference Thursday in Belgium to announce her 2009 plans.
A spokeswoman for Clijsters, the 2005 U.S. Open champion, did not return phone calls.
But a person who works at the U.S. Tennis Association told the AP there have been conversations between a tournament official and representatives of Clijsters about her participating in the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 31 in New York. The USTA told Clijsters she would receive a U.S. Open wild card if she were formally to request one.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because Clijsters has yet to announce her comeback, the person also said Clijsters' representatives told the U.S. Open official she would seek wild cards from events in Cincinnati and Toronto.
Those tournaments are both played in August and on hard courts, like the U.S. Open.
"At this time, Kim has not contacted the Tour regarding entry into Tour events," WTA spokesman Andrew Walker wrote in an e-mail to the AP.
The Belgian never returned to play in the U.S. Open after earning her lone Grand Slam championship there. A left wrist injury prevented her from defending her title at Flushing Meadows in 2006, and she announced her retirement in May 2007.
Clijsters was only 23 when she walked away, but she had already dealt with a series of injuries, including to her hip and back. She was the runner-up at four major tournaments and won 34 singles titles, along with two major doubles titles.
Rising to the top at the same time as another Belgian who retired early, Justine Henin (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=398), Clijsters held the No. 1 singles ranking for 19 weeks.
Thursday's news conference will be in Bree, Belgium, at the tennis facility where Clijsters has been practicing recently, sparking interest at home.
The Het Belang van Limburg regional newspaper reported she is set to enter top-level tournaments, while the VTM television network said she may target the U.S. Open as the highlight of her season.
Clijsters will join Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi and Tim Henman (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=665) for a series of exhibition matches at Wimbledon on May 17 to test conditions under the new retractable roof on Centre Court.
She is also scheduled to play an exhibition June 14 against Michaella Krajicek (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=383) in the Netherlands, along with two matches for the St. Louis Aces of World Team Tennis in July.

Just on an off-topic, if Kim comes back I wonder if it will be as Cjisters or if she'll use her marriage name (can't remember what it is)?

So it's almost certain? It's all over the news here in Australia, well, as much as tennis is ever all over the news.

I'll selfishly hope that the imminent comeback is effective immediately.

Thank you so much for this footage. I never saw this match. I was on the plane home from a stay in Australia when it was played. On the stop in Kuala Lumpur, I finally got to know the result.
I feel right now what I see on a banner in the crowd: "GO KIM, WRECK' EM"!!!

Apparantly Sabine Appelmans talked with Kim about joining Fed Cup team against Canada next month, but she said that was too early. Hopefully in 2010, she added :)

And more, she played a set against Flipkens, winning 6-1... Flipper had to work real hard to win that game.

another information on Clijsters' fitness (http://www.dhnet.be/sports/tennis/article/254239/on-la-verra-deja-en-fed-cup.html)

Kim Clijsters is training, you can see some pictures. (http://www.dhnet.be/sports/tennis/article/254238/kim-clijsters-je-m-entraine-un-peu.html)

"Son jeu est en tout cas déjà bien en place. Elle a encore joué un set contre Kirsten Flipkens il y a deux ou trois semaines à l'entraînement. Elle a gagné 6-1 et Flipper a dû se battre pour son jeu."

"Her game is really there. She played again Kirsten Flipkens two or three weeks ago at practise. She won 6-1 and Flipkens had to fight hard to win her only game."

4pm past, the training session finished. Kim Clijsters did enough for the day. She could leave the court, happy with her medecine under her right arm, her racket and shoes in her left hand, because she felt she trained much. She was surprised to see us (the journalists), she smiled and told us " as you can see it, I am practising a bit."

A bit ? A bit much apparently, we told her, for somebody who is going to play some exhibitions. "Yeah but I feel good by doing that", she replied while we went offer our condolences for her father's death.

"Il est prévu qu'elle vienne s'entraîner avec l'équipe à Hasselt. Elle est évidemment la bienvenue, vous pensez, et encore plus si elle décidait de participer à la rencontre."

"She has to practise with the Belgian Fed Cup team at Hasselt. She obviously is welcome, you know, and more if she decides to play with .them."said a witness who doesn't want to give his name.

If you want other translations, you are welcome :) .

Flipkens about Kim (http://media.vrtnieuws.net/2009/03/155408309ONL0903255414888_wmvhi.wmv)

She tells Kim is still hitting very hard but she doesn't know if she is really coming back. She denies Kim is training 6 hours a day. She plays tennis three times a week and she also works on her physique.

Flipkens admits she dreams of pairing up in a Grand Slam tourney.

Tomorrow is the big day. I assume she'll speak Dutch, so we'll need a translation. I don't necessarily think she is going to announce a full fledged comeback quite yet. I think she's going to say, "Let's see how the exhibition matches go, and if they do well, maybe I'll try a few tournaments." It's never been like Kim to set definite guidelines. What Flipkens said worried me. :(

If Kim is going to announce a comeback to the WTA I would assume she would only play part time to begin with. I can't see her playing 12-16 tournaments right away.
