View Full Version : Top ten performers of 2009 (up to Charleston/Stuttgart/Rome/Madrid).

On how I rank:
- Grand slam performance
- # of wins over top 10 (level of other wins taken into account as well)
- W/L percentage
- consistency (QF/SF+)
- the tier/slam levels that the player has done well at
- I include only MD & Fed Cup match wins/losses, no qualifying

I'm not saying these ranks are 100% accurate. I'd say if you think #3 could be #4 and vice versa if it's really close, then I'm doing what I'm trying to do correctly. It shouldn't ever be more than +/- 1.

As always, I'm open to changing my rankings. Vera would be #2 if she had more top ten wins; Venus would be #2 if she had a better AO showing; Elena is #2 because of the great stretch she went on; Amelie is so high due to her amount of top ten wins and two solid runs + decent AO showing.

If Ana hadn't made the final of IW, Vesnina would have been #10. Kanepi and Vesnina are the two boiling under at the moment.

Let the fun begin. :)

well she only met 2:rolleyes:

It's not her fault if all the top players lose before facing her:tape:

Yay, glad you're back :D

I think Ana should go above Virginie though. Despite not having the bigger wins, IW final is still bigger than Dubai final. Ana has an extra QF and Virginie has two 1R exits.

But it's an accurate list either way. :yeah:

Vera has also beaten 5 top 20 players including two ranked at 11, one being your fave Azarenka. Only Serena Williams has as many total top 20 wins as Vera does, six.

Additionally, and this is what I find most impressive, every single one of Vera's 18 wins has been in straight sets aside from her match against Bartoli where Bartoli waived the white flag in the middle of the 1st set, understandable considering Marion's record against Vera. Simply, Vera is on cruise control and beating virtually everyone she faces pretty effortlessly. How impressive? Damn impressive, I'd say.

Yay, glad you're back :D

It is close between Ana and Virginie. I think Virginie gets the edge because while Dubai isn't as big a tournament as Indian Wells, Virginie's run to the final was a hell of a lot more impressive (two top 5 wins, and both inform ones at that) than was Ana's.

Didn't you forget someone? Jelena lost in R4 at AO, SF in Paris, R3 in Dubai and R2 in IW. If losing to Bartoli, Kanepi and Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets doesn't get you on this list I dunno what does!

Mar 23rd, 2009, 10:35 AM
hmm definitely Serena for no1
after that it gets misty.

vera, venus and elena would be all there for no2, I dont think Vera should be 2 though because of her top 10 wins being so crap.
Venus would be no1 if she did better at AO so no2 probs is elena.

after that mauresmo was superb at Paris, Safina gutsy at AO and Vika consistent this season

YAY it's back. :D

I'd say Vera's above Elena but ohwells. Elena will probably do better in this season anyway.

JJ should definitely NOT be in top five and perhaps not in top ten. Congrats to everyone. Pretty close with three players winning two tournaments already and Serena taking the biggest prize of all!

suggest where you would put her. I think the only player all of us agree on is Serena. Especially the number 7 to 10 are a bit tricky to place. Personally I would love to see your reasons for placing her in the top10

I think the list is right for the start. In this short span of less than three months there is nearly nobody who had a perfect run. It makes the WTA so interesting. Great job :yeah:

Updated.

Razzano was taken out, Azarenka moves from #6 to #2, and everyone else remains the same. Li moves up into the top ten--her last three tournaments have been very strong, and her top ten wins move her above Ivanovic, even though she hasn't made a huge final. Her quality has certainly been better than Ivanovic's.

I think Venus should be higher....

Christinawww
Apr 9th, 2009, 09:16 AM
I think Venus is rightly placed when I compare to Zvonareva and Dementieva.

Who is Vivi?

Not sure Bartoli should be placed that high, though. Her loses in Indian Wells and Miami were here first matches of the tournament, so 3 times already she has lost in her opening round.

OMG. :tape: I have not forgotten about this thread, and I feel awful I haven't updated it. I was late updating with Miami by like a day and it seemed like no one responded, so if I can find the time on Sunday to update with Madrid results, I'll be happy.

Sorry for being slack, I feel terrible about it. I'll actually probably update with Rome results tomorrow.

No worries Ludwig, we all appreciate the work you put into it! It'll be interesting to see how/if things change though, since Serena and ED have not performed well at all since Miami. Vika might actually be the most consistent one of the year. :o Kuz and Safina will obviously jump up too.
