The conditions were extremely difficult (especially for someone with such an offensive game), so I'm proud that Ana kept it close. Vera played great, consistent defense, which was exactly what she needed to do today. Overall, this was a bad final, so hopefully Miami will be better.

it was fun to see them try to figure out the wind and hit creative shots

It was quite fun, yeah. Certainly wasn't tennis as we know it and at times it was pretty ugly but one couldn't have expected any better under such ridiculous conditions. That the two of them were actually able to sustain some quite long rallies was really quite remarkable under the circumstances. Both of them made some extraordinary last second adjustments to stay in points, I liked that.

Vera obviously handled the conditions better, especially towards the end and she deserved her win. It was tough but both girls had to deal with the same wind.

Ana should have won that 1st set, she tried doing something, attacking, coming to the net - which she was awesome at, though - but at the important points, she fell apart. Those 3 missed set points really hurt.

In the 2nd, she didn't even care. How the fuck can you win this big a tournament with only 5 winners in a 2 hours long match? That is just ridiculous. Vera is so boring.

Congrats to Ana for getting to the final at least. That's a good result. I'm just pissed she didn't win.

Mar 22nd, 2009, 10:34 PM
A parody of a match. People complain a lot about the quality of women's tennis but making them play in such conditions doesnt help at all. Can't there be a wind delay? :help: Seriously it has been a new waste of a prestigious final. Im absolutely mad at the outcome. Vera wins it with only 5 winners for God's sake, FIVE! And will Ana ever understand how to be patient? The match was so much in her racket, she did show great tennis especially at the net. Too bad her brain froze when she had this lead.

It was time for Vera to secure a big title though. She deserves it a lot and usually her game is great to watch. She proved she is a very smart girl too ;). Well done!

Congrats Vera :) Nice win for her. But, i don't think she was the "better player". 5 winners? Is that even her game?? This match was ugly, just because of the wind. Wind totally messed up Ana's game. Vera handled it better, but didn't have to do much. Ana had enough UE for both of them.
But, I'm pleased to see old Ana, she really looks so much better now :) Her coach is doing a good job. She was awesome at the net ,few mistakes, but overall it was good :)

MarieC
Mar 22nd, 2009, 10:50 PM
Congrats to Vera on her first big win!

The difference in the match was that Vera adapted to the conditions a lot better. She simply had to put the ball in play and let Ana hit it out. Hence why she won with only 5 winners to Ana's 44 UE's. I knew it was over when Ana didn't convert on the set points in the 1st set. A slight chance opened up when Ana went up 2-0 in the 2nd, but then she threw it away from 40-15 in her 2nd service game. I don't think Vera had a single winner from the 3rd game in that 2nd set. It was all Ana botching her hitting game. Hopefully this loss doesn't screw Ana up for Miami

Yeah, finishing the match with six games in a row...very unconvincing.

As for being an awful match, what do you expect in those conditions. Under the circumstances I think they both did well until Ana kind of lost the plot in the 2nd.

Good title for Zvonareva, but this was more a mental battle than anything. Ivanovic lost her patience midway through the TB and that was crucial. Patience is the most important thing in these sort of conditions.

"How to hit 5 winners and win Premier Mandatory event" by Vera Zvonareva. I couldn't stop laughing watching the match :haha:

But Vera really deserved the win today.
:help:

She won the first set by chucking everything up in the air and letting the wind carry it into a weird position. Maybe that's "taking advantage of the wind", but it wasn't good tennis, it was hoping Ana would miss, which Ana being Ana, did.

She won't ever win a grand slam with that mentality. Oh well, there's no denying she was the better player in the second, but Ana just self destructed and got too frustrated.

Anyway, the conditions were tough, it was never going to be an impressive match, so well done Vera for winning ugly, it wasn't exactly her fault.

Ana just didn't take her chances :(

Reading some of the crazy comments in this thread I actually get the feeling that there are posters in this forum who would be perfectly happy to have tennis matches decided solely by the amount of winners both players hit. The player who hits the most winners wins. Simple.

Let me remind those people however, that at present this is not in fact how tennis matches are decided. I, for one, am hugely grateful for this. Tennis should be about much more than just hitting winners.

WD Vera :yeah:

A winning mentality is playing positively and adjusting your strategy as the match progresses. There are quite a few players that go for winner after winner. They do just as Ana does. Connect about 20 times and miss about 40. They do not deserve accolades.

Vera does not play like this normally. We should all be aware of that.

Also, when someone said that Zvonareva was smart for winning 800k they were not saying that money=intelligence. It means that Vera is 800K dollars richer because she was intelligent enough to do the right things in order to make it through.

Ana you had chances ,but going for big shots in these kind of conditions is ridiculuos

Not really; you must have noticed how the more powerful shots tended to have a more predictable trajectory; it was the puffballs, slices and moonballs that flew all over the place. Hitting very powerful but nonetheless relatively conservatively placed shots (a hallmark of Ivanovic's game) would actually be a sensible strategy. Zvonareva relies much more on accuracy/placement than the divine Ivanovic, so I think she was the one who had to do the most adjustments to her game today.

This being said, I never expected this result, gale or no gale.

No, I was confused as well. Which means I was agreeing with what you said. ;)

Zvonareva relies much more on accuracy/placement than the divine Ivanovic, so I think she was the one who had to do the most adjustments to her game todayYou have a point. But timing is crucial if you're going for very powerful shots, and that's one thing that can easily go away when the wind swirls about the ball unpredictably. Ana hits a very heavy ball when she sets up, but her timing of the ball is not as natural as someone like Lindsay or even Maria.

well done vera :)

bad luck ana

wind was shocking, and didn't help ana when she takes her big swings at the ball on the forehand, but finals is a good result

Great tournament for Vera, she's really doing a great job of beating everyone she should, and hopefully it will keep translating into big wins like this and some wins over the top top players.

i'm happy for Ana - she made the Finals when people were expecting her to lose early, and she's had a bunch of matches to sort some of the kinks out in her game. Hopefully she keeps this up in Miami.

One of the ugliest matches I´ve ever seen, Ana couldn´t convert that set points, she would have won easily in the second... It was all in Ana´s hand. but she made crucial mistakes in important points... but she´ll rebound in Miami, where she has to defend a 3rd round loss to Lindsay, no less!!

I'm happy beyond belief! I've been a fan of Vera ever since her junior days (at that time it's not like I ever saw her play, but I loved her kick-ass name) and I remember watching her and falling in love with her when she started playing WTA events! And I also remember her, Nadia and Svetlana as the "young Russians to watch". And of course, her infamous tears and chokes and meltdowns, especially against Smashnova 6-1 5-0 up!)

To see her finally come into her own is just wonderful! FINALLY a big title after numerous finals! And she's good on clay, so I cant wait to see her perform when the clay season starts!

CONGRATS VERA ZVONAREVA!

Hell I've read some rubbish today! what do you mean she would have won easily in the second? she didn't win the second, have a look! You too should change a few habits! Some seem to lose all sense of reality when one of their favourite players lose, hell all players lose!

Congrats Vera :hearts:

Congrats to Vera on putting the ball in the court for 2 hours and winning the title in the process accidentally. Seriously can we have a new go when the hurricane stops? :o Vera had 5 winners in the whole match... :tape:

Bitter much?

Your fave missed tons of returns just because she wanted to hit the return winner. Not very intelligent played, so Vera deserved to win since she act much more smarter :wavey:

Impressive net play from Ana in the first set! Usually I'm not a fan of her, but she is slowly showing she is more than just a forehand...

Ana simply didn't play well enough to win today/yesterday. The wind cannot be blamed, it didn't just affect her. But it was encouraging to see her playing aggressive tennis again, and also great net play, she was very effective at the net. But overall, poor decision making. She was outplayed and Vera deserved the win.
BUT I don't understand all the hate for Ana. What's not to like ? She's friendly, sweet and incredibly HOT ;) She is also a GREAT player when in form, and one of only four grand slam winners in the top ten - the other three being Kuzzy and the WS. People shouldn't be kicking her whilst she's down. I believe she will return to the top of her game and beyond, and take home a few more majors :)

Ivanovic didnt handle the wind intelligentely like vera did by putting the ball inside the court instead of hitting hard like ana did ...

This match reminds me the USOPEN semis between Safina /Serena played in the same conditions . We could see how Safina wanted to hit the ball hard when serena managed to maintain the ball inside the court regarding the windy conditions ....

The most intelligent won the match , and vera was the most intelligent..end of the story...

Well, this is rubbish, too, and you show the entire forum that you have no idea what the term 'momentum' means. If Ivanovic had won that first set Zvonareva would have been crying all the way to her hotel room bed.

Too bad......Vera was more determined yesterday, and Ana is not that kind of a player who will just hit the ball over the net like Vera...that's not her game....
Stupid wind......
Well congrats to Vera, but I really felt Ana should have won this one....
