View Full Version : Players Reminding You of Other Players

I thought of this after reading an article about Nastya Pavlyuchenkova.

http://tennisworld.typepad.com/thewrap/2009/03/iw-not-nasty.html
"She begins with a long, Davenport-esque loop. The result, like Lindsay's so often was, is a devastatingly flat and penetrating ball."

This made me wonder whether anyone is reminded of certain players from the past when they are watching young players of today's generation. I know there has been much talked about Vaidisova's backhand being very reminiscent of Venus'.

Anastaia P reminded me of Jennifer Capriati when I first saw her last night.
Azeranka kinda reminds me a bit of Maggie Meleeva. I'm not talking playing styles at all. Just something about the way they carry themselves on the court. Zvereva and that tan girl from Venuzulea (SP) look alike imho. The one that wears her dark glasses on the court. She's underated on the board with her looks though.

Bar, the double hander, srebotnik reminds me of Novotna, i dont know why. I think it's Kata's athletic ability that does the comparison for me.

Prior to 2007/2008 Nalbandian & Dementieva (although I like Nalbandian and dislike Elena).

2004: Dementieva & Coria :tape:

And Vaidisova's backhand similar to Venus' :tape: Who said that? Was that person high?

This is a really interesting thread and I can follow most of your arguments really well. Although in some cases I hadn't thought about this at all before, but I mostly agree.

Jankovic / Coria . The antics , style of tennis with a lot control - first serves in game - anticipation - speed. Pretty much everything personality and tennis wise

pirinkova is a poor man's dementieva.

for all the comparsions here to coetzer - Cibilkova is the only one that even comes close.

Vinci\raymond is a funny one actually. Lisa at best was a S&V, while vinci at best is a chip and charger. it usually comes together, but they are two examples of players that usually use only one of the net-game tactics...

I have also thought before that Bondarenko's groundstrokes are similar to Kournikova's. ;) They look a little alike in appearance too, with the long plait and body shape, height etc.
I thought that Radwanska's service motion is kinda similar to Davenport

I agree, as you can see above. ;)

Just thought I'd bump my own thread because I read somewhere that Dulgheru has a FH very similar to that of her idol, Henin. After watching some highlights of Dulgheru, I've got to say I agree, the resemblance is there!

I actually like Pironkova, I wonder if this is why, I wouldn't have considered them entirely similar but I guess they kinda are...

Cirstea reminds me a little of Capriati.

Mainly the ponytail and physique. There are some similarities in how they put their bodyweight into the ball when hitting groundstrokes, although Capriati's footwork is far more dynamic and improvised.
