View Full Version : JJ explains why she isn't playing well this year :(

Latest blog from her official website:

20.03.2009.

To my dear fans,

Firstly, I want to apologize for not writing in so long. I've had some problems in the family and haven't been playing my best, so I've been quite preoccupied. I'm happy to write to you all again now, though, and tell you what's going on.

I haven't started the year like I wanted to. As you can all see, I haven't been playing well at all. I'm struggling with my game, most importantly my reactions and speed. I feel quite heavy on the court. I'm getting to my shots late, and I'm never in the right place.. At this level, at the top of the women's game, you need this. It has been my biggest weapon in the past, too. Even when my shots weren't working I always had my legs, and I've won many matches because I've moved and competed well. It was always my Plan B, and it's not there anymore. I've lost it now. I'm just trying to find it again.

My preparation in the off-season was different this year, and I don't think the change has worked out for me. These weren't the results I expected. Especially after ending last year so well, my goal this year was to start dominating women's tennis. I wanted to be even better in 2009. I feel like I've gone down a few levels. My whole game is suffering, and I've lost my confidence. I'm making changes, like I'll be working with a new fitness coach. I hope to find my game again soon. I'm staying positive. I need to keep growing and working hard, and keep my head up high even though it's not so easy sometimes.

I'm here in Indian Wells with my mom, who hasn't been feeling so well. She's struggling with some health problems. I'm really worried about her. That also affects my tennis, because I'm so close to her and the last few nights I haven't slept many hours. If she needs something, I want to be right there with her. As a tennis player you go through a crisis now and then with your game, but it's just a game, and at the end of the day there are more important things: the people who are close to you, the ones you love a lot. I just hope she gets better, that's what I care about most in this moment. My game can come together sooner or later, hopefully. It can be hard to talk about these things... hopefully you can all understand.

I'm leaving for Miami soon and will write to you from there next week. I hope things will start to change for the better. Many people have been asking me why I haven't been smiling on the court lately. All I can say is, hopefully you'll see the smile back very soon :)

Hopefully you're all doing well. Take care and a big hug to all of you.

Jelena

Some of you people are jerks. I can't believe you are rolling your eyes at this and laughing. The girl is going through a hard time, she is explaining to her fans what is happening - not just telling it during an interview. I hope your favourite will go through the same. I'm sure you wouldn't react the same way. I think it shows what you are made of.

I hope Jelena will find her tennis soon again, but even more important, that her mother will be well. I'm glad she realizes there are more important things in life than tennis.

Come back soon Jelena :)

Very honest article. It takes a lot of humility to admit you were aiming to do something and it didn't work. Jelena also has the courage to be quite honest about the state her game is in and doesn't give the fake positivity one tends to see in these types of blogs. Jelena allows herself to be quite vunerable.

The last paragraph is also very poignant, she by acknowleding her smile is gone, makes it very clear she has not been happy on the court. In doing so we can also conclude that when we do she her smile on the court it is genuine. This is a girl who in the past has enjoyed being on the court playing tennis and has not had a problem showing that. I like that. It seems clear to me, when we see Jelena smile on the court it is something genuine. I can understand no player is going to appeal to everyone but I have never gotten people who say they don't like Jelena because they find her smiling on the court annoying. Personally I have always found that to be the most appealing part of her personality and I don't consider myself a big fan either, although I like her.

Obviously I also hope her mother gets well soon. :awww:

I wouldn't call losing to Vera at YEC as dominating her.

JJ already had 2 round robin wins, so that match with Vera wasn't very important. Plus, she defeated Vera in 3 consecutive tournaments prior to YEC

Oh please, it's not a domination, she only won MM titles, she always lost during BIG competitions, she wasn't dominating anything. We can talk about domination, when you win Majors, or BIG titles, I don't think Stuttgart, Moscou and dontcareboutheothereone are.

Dominating is a bit of a joke, but- in fairness to her- I don't believe she said she wanted to "dominate AGAIN." I believe she said she wanted to dominate THIS YEAR which is an important distinction- albeit a lofty goal.

my goal this year was to start dominating women's tennis.

I find it funny though that she and many fans are willing to offer "personal problems" as a reason for poor play, but when the Sisters were CLEARLY having personal problems many people around here were QUICK to dismiss them.

"dominating women's tennis" :haha:

And what is wrong with wanting to dominate and trying to do it? Jelena has for sometime had the best defensive game in tennis. The obvious thinking was that were she to add more power to that game so that she could hit more winners she would be even better. The attempt to try to get herself in the shape to do that didn't work and it became clear that in trying to make herself stronger she sacrificed the qualities that made her the very good player she is. Still, I would say it was admirable that she made such a big effort to improve after her not insubstantial success of last year. I think those that want to laugh at that are pretty small actually.

I thought it looked EXTREMELY possible that JJ could start dominating tennis.
Her training long hours was getting all sorts of buzz, and she went on a tear last year and likely only lost at the YEC due to fatigue.

She's just completely out of sorts. The level of tennis at the Ao was hilariously low. It could have all started there...

clearly bulking up was a mistake and I think anyone with half a brain could have told her that based on her game. whoever is in charge of "thinking" in her camp should be fired asap.

Actually, bulking up isn't a bad idea if you can do it without losing movement and reaction time (right idea poorly executed)...she knew she'd need to improve her game if she wanted achieve more than the "most consistent player in Non-Slam Events" award.

Despite her claims to the contrary her actions show that she too knows the Slams are what really matter. ;)

Interesting blog ... I wonder who gave her the advice about bulking up. I wonder if it was in an effort to boost her serve. And even while writing that, I don't see any bulk up in her body anyway. To me, that excuse is really overblown.

I pray her mom gets healthy. But I have to agree with another poster. There is a double standard going on. When Venus & Serena went through their family crisis, people wanna gloss over it as if it didn't happen. They know good & well, their fave (especially Justine) benefitted greatly from their absence.

It sounds harsh but if Jelena wasn't over the top so much, people would take her more seriously.

no offense but anyone who doesnt take it fucking seriously when their relatives are injured are pieces of shit in my mind, her and her mom are close, on court antics have nothing to do with a relationship with a family member, we fans and obviously haters see her on court, no one on this board can say they KNOW a player because they don't. if she wouldn't have said that, the only thing that would continue and still will is that jelena sucks, and everyone knows who directs the hate towards her.

Classless stuff from the majority of posters in this thread, as per usual. A sick mother for anyone is going to kill a little bit of themselves. My mother, who I'm not even close to, had a cancer scare late last year and I could barely think or breathe for weeks, let alone try to do what Jelena's doing.

Ugh, it just disgusts me. Tennis isn't even important, your family is, and if she's been distracted by that, I simply can't blame her. The same happened with Myskina and maybe Dementieva now, plus plenty of other players.

I hope Snezana gets well soon and that Jelena recovers her game. She deserves that at least.

After two impressive years of consitency from JJ that got her to the top of womens tennis, I believed it was the right choice to take a shot in a different training to be stronger and more powerful on the court to chase Grand Slams titles. Didn't worked out but at least she tried. I think she'll be alright though but it'll might take a while to get her confidence back. I also think the preassure of finish last year at no. 1 without a GS got to her. Even Federer had something to say about that!. Tough stuff to handle i can imagine.

JJ we need you back. :hearts:

Am I the only one that does not see the bulk in Jelenas body? When Justine bulked up the changes was obvious. I am having a hard time noticing any difference in Jelena now and last year.
Agreed.

Do you want attention? Is that it? Cause I refuse to believe that you're that heartless.
Heartless or not, the points relevant.

I think that's it. It's one of his 21871289371892 attempts at trying to be funny. Actually he and JJ totally belong together. :tape:

What a drama queen. Suck it up JJ and stop overdramatizing everything. Hopefully her mother gets better though but she needs to quit feeling sorry for herself and trying to get other to feel sorry for her too.

Some of you people are jerks. I can't believe you are rolling your eyes at this and laughing. The girl is going through a hard time, she is explaining to her fans what is happening - not just telling it during an interview.

I hope Jelena will find her tennis soon again, but even more important, that her mother will be well. I'm glad she realizes there are more important things in life than tennis.

Come back soon Jelena :)

Go through what though? Her post was really vague on the health problems. And considering Jelena reputation for exaggerating (whether its claiming she’d have died like Heath Ledger when she was offered pain killers at the AO, or the constant referrals to Serena as a Arnold Schwazenegger’s body double) – for all we know, Snizzlenana or whatever could just have a some trapped wind, constipation or a piece of meat stuck between her teeth. We don’t know how serious it is hence how to take it. If it’s fair enough to call people jerks for not feigning concern and taking this SO seriously, it’s fair to ridicule the gullible clowns holding vigils over this.

And one more thing, how low are the people (mostly Jelena fans) who banded together and reported reetard’s post leading him to get banned. His post was harmless, comedy gold infact! What’s wrong with the forum today is the legion of humourless babies polluting the place out. Posters like JDI who send PMs asking posters to go kill themselves, then burn out the report button once a meek joke is made about their faves. Rubbish!

I thought it looked EXTREMELY possible that JJ could start dominating tennis.

Her training long hours was getting all sorts of buzz, and she went on a tear last year and likely only lost at the YEC due to fatigue.

:speakles: How many top 5 wins did she pick up during her tear... how many matches was she having to play and who was she beating. She had what, 2 top 5 wins for the whole year, worst stats than Safina and Serena... She won just 2 matches at the YEC against Ivanovic who was slumping (3 setter I think) and against Kuzzy who didn't even win 1.

I just don't understand that... I guess contextual factors don't matter .

How low can you go? Seriously. That's just twisted...

Has anyone already said that it was stupid of Jelena to think she'd dominate? If not, we totally have to point out that Jelena is nowhere near as good as Babygurl Ree and will never, ever be able to do anything on the tennis court. And we'll feel good about ourselves in the process because our fave (i.e. Babygurl) is such an amazing tennis player.

Mar 21st, 2009, 01:23 PM
Oh please, it's not a domination, she only won MM titles, she always lost during BIG competitions, she wasn't dominating anything. We can talk about domination, when you win Majors, or BIG titles, I don't think Stuttgart, Moscou and dontcareboutheothereone are.

If this was Maria writing about a problem in her family, you and her othersupporters would be sobbing like little girls. At least have the decency to not post anything here if you have nothing supportive or nice to say.

Dominating is a bit of a joke, but- in fairness to her- I don't believe she said she wanted to "dominate AGAIN." I believe she said she wanted to dominate THIS YEAR which is an important distinction- albeit a lofty goal.

I find it funny though that she and many fans are willing to offer "personal problems" as a reason for poor play, but when the Sisters were CLEARLY having personal problems many people around here were QUICK to dismiss them.

 I'm right there with you. I seriously think she's having personal problems and wish her well but the hypocritical nature of posters on this board disturbs me. When the sisters have "personal issues" they're only making excuses for losing. Most of same posters who are saying, "Aww...Jelena" will swear that the sisters personal issues aren't valid.:o

As for Reetard'd posts being " gold comedy ". His posts were offending many people on this board, and it was about time to get him banned.
Next, I reported 5 or 6 posts in my life. And yes, I repped denise saying " die ", but i didnt mean it ... lets say that was a " gold comedy " :)

I knnnoooow. And in this thread so far, I've had a post deleted and been bad repped for the post you highlighted. And yet some other posters like JDI tell posters to go suffer slow painful deaths and traipse around without so much as a warning, while the rest of us are surveillenced, hunted down, bullied and abused like guantanamo bay runaways. I don't understand it. But I'm really upset about what's happened to Reetard because what he said was harmless.
